Been thinking about getting a PI just so I can keep my main pc powered down unless I'm actually in need of it. Electricity isn't free, and I imagine one of these would pay for itself pretty quickly. The only reason I haven't done it is that support seems fickle with these kinds of products. Sometimes things just don't work, and you never know if its you or is there something wrong with it. It is pretty tempting to get an sbc, print a shell and stick it to the back of my monitor for watching videos, reading or just farting around. My son's first computer was a kid's product called Kano which was a raspberry pi 3, so I've messed around with that a little bit. I don't remember being too impressed with it. Hopefully you can exchange it out and try it again. God bless ya and good luck, man!

Hi there! Yep, I'd say the Raspberry Pi 5 4gb would be your safest bet if you wanted an sbc to watch videos and jas support. I might have gotten a bad unit :( Thanks again, I appreciate it :)

These are awesome for people that write code, or work with the electrical/GPIO side. The small size and weight means someone could mount one on a drone (for example), and interface with sensors or a myriad of other tasks. The low power consumption means it minimizes battery drain and has a lower impact on that drone's flight time. I could stick it on a mobile robot running from a power bank, or attach a camera and stick it inside a beehive. Using it as a desktop may be useful on a sailboat or something where maybe you sacrifice performance for getting the most out of a battery charged from a solar panel. Someone coming from a very entry level PC background that doesn't build stuff (maybe they just want it to run youtube, ms office, and play video games) wont get much out of it.

Hi there, you're totally spot on. I just mainly wanted to try out op distros for it and found that very few worked. I also wanted to see if the system could do basic tasks like play youtube videos since they had desktop distros. I probably didn't give it enough time. I've got an op 5 that runs great, so I know some are ok. Some like this might be suited to a camera setup or a pi hole. This unit is roughly the same power as a raspberry pi 3b. I had one of those, and it had less ram and did ok. I'm currently testing another zero product, and it is doing so much better than this one. Well ty for the insight and tips for this sbc. I appreciate it :)

Another example of how a maker/builder would use something like this is to run a server OS (like ubuntu server), and run a bunch of python code as systemd services/daemons.... or perhaps a custom x-server kind of deal to power a touchscreen kiosk in the lobby of an airport. The OS in these cases is a little less relevant, and you're more concerned with the limits of the hardware (ie - does it play this 4K video file smoothly when the user presses the help button on the kiosk). It really makes more sense benchmarked from that perspective.

@JazzTechie this is great info and examples tyvm again! :) I'm currently working on a project I'll use either my Radxa board or my pi 5. Stay tuned!!

This SBC could be good for application with small touch screen due to its size and big RAM. Unfortunately, connecting screen and touch layer to this is not easy, if possible. I haven't found one officially compatible with this SBC.

@petrklic7064 Hi There. Oh wow that's good information to know ty! Wonder if my Radaxa would work for that? Probably raspberry pi is ones best bet though.

@petrklic7064 7 дней назад
@@RememberThisTech Well, strange thing is that i haven't found any video (tutorial) about connecting screen to this. There are recommended compatible screens for other Orange SBCs, but not for this. It will need some experimenting. Good for someone who already have some touchscreen modules at home.

This video is a waste of my time. This board is not a desktop pc so why try to use it as one

Has desktop os distros, most of which don't even work, which is what i was pointing out. Close specs to a Raspberry Pi 3b and that I used a mini pc back in the day. Again, I never claimed this to be a desktop pc, either.

That's to bad. I like the size / ram options for a Pihole server. Orange Pi 5 (+) is to much compute for a pihole + unbound for 37 clients (I have 2 of them but they are VERUS coin miners now). I'll stay with my dual raspberry pi 4 for now for pihole. Thanks for all the info.
@RememberThisTech
@RememberThisTech 2 месяца назад
Hi there! Yeah, maybe mine was a bad unit, but I'm not sure. Raspberry pi 4 4s or maybe even 1 5 would work for a pi hole. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

You're right. I didn't put as much time into testing this video as I could have. But after 4 images wouldn't work from op website and their Google download, I kind of lost interest in their bad support and bad distro releases of their product. So yes, I could have tracked down and figured out how to enable and install the mali panfrost drivers, etc. But what I was trying to do is point out how they lact support and put out bad images so others may have a heads up. Oh, by the way, I pointed out in the video that Android would and does fully support the Gpu acceleration... but that image failed as well. So yes, i did try it.. you know there's also a possibility that i got a bad zero 2w....I'll try to do better thanks for the info and pushing me forward.

@@RememberThisTech the Mali driver should be installed already, that's not how you enable the GPU on Opi zero 2w.

This is just about the dumbest pi review I’ve seen - it’s not a "desktop" system. Anyways… with Orange Pi boards I’ve mostly started from Armbian, never bothered with "official" images.
@RememberThisTech
@RememberThisTech 2 месяца назад
Hi there. First off your probably spot on about just starting with Armbian. I never stated that this review would be be just using the op zero 2w as a main desktop. But since they had images for them I wanted to see what worked and didn't. I mostly wanted to point out what went wrong. Their support and images weren't good. Not every review is a picture perfect "everything is great and perfect review lol". Thanks for the tip.
