ONLY 30 WATTS. Surely its more than that. This thing is so loud but does do low volumes really really well when you use the power scaling making a perfect home, recording and gigging amp. Thank you very very much for watching. :)
I picked up a new TH 30 head about 2 months ago . I plug it into an orange 1x12 closed back cab. 2x12 is to heavy. I'm getting old. I love the simplicity of this amp. I love the amp. Dirty channel is awesome and has more gain then I would ever need. Clean is awesome too and breaks up nicely. My guitars are 93 LP standard w/ P90's and 61 reissue SG. I do not use anh effects pedal. My only pedal is aBoss tuning pedal. Can be used30 watts, 15 and 7.5. Nice feature for cranking it at home. 30 watts is plenty for the gigging I do. Small clubs/bars and outdoor type parties. Might add a 2nd 1x12 at some point.I suggest going to your local music store and testing one. You won't be disappointed. I play mostly classic rock. Amp is a bit pricey but I think its well worth it. Also has an effects loop which I do not use. I tested mine side by side with an Orange OR15. Also very nice. OR15 is single channel 15 watt. Also can be used at 7.5 watts.
Its a very very very very very good amp ... yes indoodle! The drive channel wouldn't be for me either ... but i'm always impressed by this distinctive Orange-OD: full, fat, not piercing, ... great!
Dave nailed it here. TH30 is much brighter and can't be dialed out with ease. Much better suited to humbuckers. Much better suited to modern music. Tried one today side by side with cr120. cr120 prevailed. better EQ, better punch, thicker, and more versatile. Only thing the th30 did better was cleans.
The clean tone is very similar, the El 84s in the OR do have a bit more bottom end when pushed to natural break on clean and perhaps a more vintage feel on the gain channel. the tone controls on the OR definatly offer more control over the shaping of mid range. other than that, plugged into my 4x12 cab they are extremely similar. both quite simple but full of great sounds i have dialed, and yet to discover. TH 30 is in my opinion one of the best Tube amps you can get for the money.
Hello Dave, I have found u are correct when it comes to the th30 and humbuckers sounding more to fit. I would like for u to if u could to feel the joy of a 56 LPjr plugged into a tuner them into a rockerverb 50. I inherited a 1956 Jr from my grandfather and it's a sound that is just balls to the wall of sweet rock n roll. It's something about that p90 and the way it sounds through the rockerverb 50. I can get any time from country twang all the way through to Van Halen. Seriously man, u have got to experience the tone of the gods before u pass. Im m more of a L.P. man only because my grandad left me the Jr and I learned to play on that .When I was 16 I was fortunate enough to buy my own Peavey predator used of course but it sounded like a start. It was black with white pick guard and I played that thing into 3 refrets. I loved the strat after that and seeing SRV on Austin City Limits. Try the p90 it's a really cool tone my friend. Keep up the awesome work.
Though I agree it is more modern sounding, the reason for the harshness on the dirty channel is the volume is too low. You need to crank the volume and turn the gain to taste. You can't do that at home without an attenuator. Same issue with a plexi or any valve amp for that matter.
I had a matamp and when I played it all the croquery fell out of the neighbours dresser - but that was OK cos she say that it was the most melodious playing she'd heard since Segovia - and she ought to know as her cousin was married to his nephew back when they all lived in Wales...
Hey Dave! Great vid i was wondering at high volumes like gig level without micing your cab which sounds better? cr120 or th30, i heard the cr120 thins out at really high master volume levels i wanted to know what you thought! aLSO what guitar are you using?
+Dario Carrasco I've heard that the CR thins out at loud volumes to but its not true. I normally gig mine on 6 or 7 and have never had that issue. I would prefer the CR over the TH because its a little bit more versatile and classic sounding. The Les Paul is a Vintage V100PG Lemon drop and the Strat is a custom made strat I've had for ages. It has Wilkinson single coils in it with a transparent amber finish. Thank you for watching. :)
really enjoy yr videos - yr really an amazing guitar player - have u ever tried any of the Randall amps ? some of the stuff u have played has blown me away - it's nice to hear someone that actually still plays old school -
I have that amp, what settings did you have the dirty channel on when you were playing the Van Halen stuff? it looked like the shape knob was on about 2.5? with the gain maxed? Thanks man your videos are killer!
welp, actually prefer the CR120 too :D the only other amp i'd ever like to own would be the rockerverb and or the Randall Satan (last one 'cus chugs. but yes, they are both damn expensive) Thanks for the video! :)
Hey Dave, I wanna ask, you are using some pedal to make that distortion sound, right ?? And If you turn GAIN to max, is it making some HUM or not ? I really would like to know, because I own Orange Dual Terror, and its good amp, but when I want to use HIGH gain settings without any pedal, its making unbelievable annoying HUM soud.. So I am just wondering is its same here too.. thanks for answer
I wasn't using any pedals no. Its just the amps distortion. The amp hisses with gain on full but most amps do on full gain and there is 60 cycle hum with single coils. : )
Hi. Would this be a good choice for a solo artist who mainly plays Swedish Death Metal? I normally record with a Randall RD-1H but I'm looking for an amp to dual track under the Randall.
***** Thank you for responding, I just discovered this channel through this video yesterday and I have to say, you're a fantastic guitar player. I wish I'd discovered this channel sooner haha. Anyway, I subscribed and I hope you're having a great day. Thanks again for responding.
The th 30 takes pedals really well and yes it's a very modern amp ............. please do a Marshall jmd1 it goes from classic to super hi gain and it's 100w or you can get a 50w combo try one see what you think
Ha Dave, if you put it in full power mode and lower the volume it produces better mid range and girth for the single coils , it was my first orange amp I loved it , but I do prefer the more traditional orange rocker style , I used to try and play blues on that amp and b3 I noticed I'd be head banging
I recently got the cr120h and I love It! But I play in a high school jazz band and when it comes to cleans if I crank the clean channel volume it becomes broken up any advice?
I personally prefer the CR as the TH is just to bright and modern sounding to my ear. You can get the CR to sound a lot like the TH though through tweaking. It would make a great backup to your TH. :)
i know your gonna hate me for this Dave, but i can super tell thats a valve amp, as much as i love that ss Orange you always use, the clean does sound amazing.....
HELP!! Hi Dave......greetings from all you videos from Italy...asking for advice (open to any who can answer): I own a Marshall origin 50w and thinking about upgrade to this Orange th30....should or shouldn't?
@@thedavesimpson i actually didn't think you were going to reply back ....at least not in so short time! Thank you! along with Ben McLeod you are my heroes! On Sunday I'll have a meet up with the guy who's solding the Orange....I'll try it out and what works best to my ears. Note that I already run the marshall into an orange 212 closed back cab (tight bass response reason)...I thought it was a logical upgrade to match orange head and orange cab.....thank you Dave! The world needs you!
Thank you for this review and demo! I’m torn trying to decide between the TH30 and the CR120 pro. I really cannot decide. Any advice? I like to play doom/sludge and have a late 80s Laney 412 cab that I’d be playing through.
I would personally recommend the CR. It has darker tone that will suit your style more. The TH is very bright by comparison. Thank you very much for watching. :)
@@thedavesimpson Awesome, thanks for the quick response! I'll scan Craigslist and Reverb and see if I can find any deals, otherwise I'll be heading to zzounds and ordering one this weekend. Thanks again!
Found one of these sitting in my local music store... 1050.00, they take trades so I’m gonna bring in my CR35 and Micro Dark to see what they can do for me Any advice for bargaining?
@@notryan1502 wow that’s a big step up!!! Good move and glad to hear!! I am considering a TH30 or the bad cat cub 40R USA Player.....Two very different amplifiers but both cover so much ground. Tough one!
I had a th 30 brand new but swapped it for a Marshall Jmd1 which is a hybrid tube amp 4 el34s and 16 Marshall pre amps and it is awesome way better than the th30
Do you base that on the difference in price, or does the cr120h sound that much better? I have a cr120h and added an eq in the loop because it sounded a little too dark for me. I love the way it sounds now, especially at about 3-4 on the Master Volume. I have seen a few vids on this TH30 head and its 30,15,7 capabilities, as well as the way the clean channel sounds when gassed, and am intrigued.
It normally doesnt sound good witha strat but your strat is ORANGE! you do know TONE is in the fingers right? so when are we going to see a review of a First act guitar and amp? baahaa seriously ide bet you could make it sound like something way better.
