An orangutan forced to sleep on a concrete floor at a zoo in Thailand has been filmed making itself a makeshift hammock. Nemo, a 14-year-old female orangutan, is able to roam around a bigger enclosure during the day but spends her nights inside the small cage at Nakhonratchasima Zoo.
Video uploaded onto RU-vid by Animal Cognition shows Nemo using hessian cloth and the bars in her enclosure to build a hammock to keep her up off the ground. "How tragic for such an intelligent animal to be trapped in a cage," Animal Cognition, a website that investigates the mental capacity of animals, writes.
"We at Animal Cognition believe that when animals cannot live in their natural habitat (due to trauma or otherwise), their natural habitat should be emulated as well as possible. "Unfortunately very few zoos manage to do this well enough."
