I've tried the Orcam products and although they are good, the price is prohibitive. This device doesn't do anything that my iPhone doesn't do at almost a third of the cost. The developers will argue that they have a limited customer base so they need to recoup their development costs but I can't help thinking that if the were selling for less than £500, they would increase their customer base and sell many more units.

Technology is amazing! Hopefully the price becomes more affordable, as demand increases!

Good Review, thanks! I got one of these 2 days ago through the Veterans' Administration, but it came without a user's manual (they sent two manuals, but neither was for this device), so I'm having to feel my way with this new gadget. Thanks for the good orientation.

Glad I could help! I noticed it was tough to find the proper user manual online. So I used the OrCam Read 2 manual and things worked out just fine. :)

How did you get the VA to pay for this device?
@wethepeople-ron
@wethepeople-ron 2 месяца назад
@@michellemccloud7603 I went through the VAMC's Blind and Vision-Impaired Services office. They took care of it. But my conclusion is that it was a waste of their money. The thing is nearly useless, and the instructions they give aren't much help. I hope that soon they will begin building AI into their currently-very-hard-to-use product.

This is @Lida22 logged in with a different account. After using this device for quite a while, or rather, TRYING to use it, my conclusion is that for me it is mostly useless. First, you have to be able to see to use it. Second, the instructions provided are complex and confusing. Third, it is very awkward to use the thing in just about any situation. Fourth, while the laser targeting reticle is a great idea, it is nearly impossible to use with any fluency, and makes you go through contortionist-type gyrations to get the reticle to capture what you want it to. Even though the VA purchased this device (and I am super glad I didn't lay out my own money), I feel it was a waste of those funds. I'm sorry to be negative, but I hope this review saves some others from laying out their money and then being as disappointed with this device as I am.

Hey there, nice channel. I too have albinism, although I believe I have OCA2 and my hair is more straw colored than yours. I thankfully can drive with normal glasses although I can't read road signs at all. (I am very grateful for GPS on our phones these days). Also am lucky enough I can just magnify things on my phone when I can't read them, such as at the store. WIsh I would have had a device like that though when I was in school, way when. It was so hard constantly getting up to pretty much stand a few feet from the board to copy what was written there.

Thank you so much for your most informative video! Now I know that it may behoove me to purchase the MyEye Pro ONLY $4,100 on Amazon LOL! But as a low vision power wheelchair user i think I'd benefit from using the orientation, color and face recognition a lot I'd put the device on the left arm of the glasses and drive with my right. If I'm not mistaken the MyEye is easier to aim at text not depending on usable vision. But I read something about it requiring more light to read than other versions. Since I just began to research this device today I've only seen this video so I don't know if you've tested those other devices. But if you've tested the MyEye I'd love to hear your opinions!

Hi there! I'm so glad you found it helpful! It's pretty crazy how expensive it is! I completely agree. The face recognition, orientation and colour are much more useful to me as well. There are also free options on your phone like the Be My AI (Be My Eyes) and Microsoft Seeing AI, as well as the new apple Magnifier app (IDs doors, colours, people, and more) and the Google Lookout on Pixel/Samsung which can do many of the same things so may be worth checking out. Not trying to sway you one way or another, just worth a thought. :)

You know I didn't realize that be my eyes had actually gone to a lot of AI I think it's now free. Unfortunately I'm still operating a Samsung Note 9 and I don't know if it will support it because I have Android 10 and that's where I'm stuck until I buy a new phone. But I just watched a little video and was close to tears because you're right! Be My Eyes is a great place to start now that they don't rely totally on human volunteers and I'll do that right now. Thanks so much for your help!

Oof. I gotta be honest, something about the fact that they have an influencer marketing department feels kind of uncomfy. It’s also still a little frustrating that is still so expensive when it isn’t that much better than stuff most smart phones can do. The whole way the representative spoke just kind of gave me the ick. It’s a little weird to me just how aggressively they’ve been targeting influencers to promote the product, and obviously they are salesman, but boy do they really talk like car dealership people. That discount is also pretty poor ngl. The whole story she told about the one client who cooked dinner for the first time was what really pushed me over the edge though. That one felt like straight up inspiration porn relying on newly blind peoples fear and lack of knowledge to get them to pay ridiculous amount of money for something They could have accomplished just as well with just some simple independent living instruction. That part felt a bit predatory to be entirely honest.

what is the difference between OrCam and OrCam Read 3?
@UnsightlyOpinions
@UnsightlyOpinions 9 месяцев назад
OrCam is a company that makes the Read 3. They make several different products like the my eye and read. Read is intended for folks with more vision and the my eye can be used by anyone even no vision.

Hello 👋 I'm a albinism girl. I have lots of hair fall and acne. Can you please suggest me a product.
@UnsightlyOpinions
@UnsightlyOpinions 7 месяцев назад
Hi there, Everyone's hair and skin is different even with albinism so I would check with a dermatologist if you can to see what's up with your skin. it could be something entirely unrelated to your albinism. The only thinks I know are that we should avoid things with vitamin C and retinol but I'm not sure why.

I just purchased orcam my eye, is it worth having?
@UnsightlyOpinions
@UnsightlyOpinions 4 месяца назад
I think that would depend on your personal needs and wants in a device. If it works well for you then absolutely it's worth having. If it doesn't, then it isn't. Everyone is different so without knowing you, it would be hard to know. :)

Just wondering can someone with albinism have perfect eyesight but pale skin and white hair? I’m sorry if I offend someone I’m just quite curious but cant really find anything useful on the internet
@UnsightlyOpinions
@UnsightlyOpinions 6 месяцев назад
Most people with albinism have some level of non-correctable visual impairment. However it can vary quite widely amongst those who have albinism. One of the most universal symptoms is photophobia or pain and discomfort in high light environments like outdoors.

We tried it for my 88 year old mother who has severe macular degeneration. We are sending it back because for $3K, it has serious shortcomings: - Too much reading for set up. A huge printed book with tiny print for a guide? Don’t know how a person who has vision issues could set it up themselves. Elderly will not be able to do the app connect. - Need a dedicated pause button. The double tap the trigger is janky. - Speaker sucks. Not loud enough for elderly with hearing. Can't believe this is the speaker they have for $3K. - Laser red finder lines should be thicker. Too thin for vision problem person - Only 4 voices to chose from with the reader and they are very dated and unnatural.
