Today we take a look at some of my favorite tricks that keep my orchids pest free!
🦋 More info below! 🦋
1. Fungus gnats are a pesky little insect that colonizes pots which stay moist. They can damage plants and pose some risks to us as well. You can get some Drosera and Pinguicula plants and they will catch most of the colony. You can also use a mosquito repellent plug in for instant results!
More on fungus gnats en.wikipedia.o...

2. Bush snails are a cute, but dangerous little critter that can damage and even destroy orchids. I like to use hydrogen peroxide 3% on the roots with every repot, this takes care of eggs as well! Never had issues since! • Repotting 10 Oncidium ...
Algae can be kept in check with this as well, learn more here • Algae removal on Orchi...
3. Mites and many other insects can be a huge problem, especially if you don't want to use toxic insecticides. The red spider mite can also transfer the orchid fleck virus • Orchid fleck virus - s...
Pests can develop resistance to substances, learn more about it here en.wikipedia.o...
I love using mineral oil, more specifically paraffin oil, check my recipe here • How to get rid of spid...
It works much better than vegetable oils, look here • Vegetable oil Vs. Mine...
This apparently works on other pests such as mealybugs and aphids, try it also on scale and thrips, but always use it on one leaf, or one orchid first! Always follow my recipe, don't use more than 2%!

If your going with a sundew, go with a Drosera Capensis. They are extremely easy to grow, and can be grown as a house plant next to your orchid to get the fungus gnats. Got to remember to use rainwater or RO water for them :)

Please talk about nemtodes for fungus gnats, and thrips. It is put in the water and just one application got rid of a year's worth of thrip and fungus gnats problems. Safe for people and pets and safe for indoor use.

if you want to get mosquitos too, you might wanna get a Drosera filiformis which have long, string like leaves that can catch larger prey than fungus gnats. I find that drosera tokaiensis (the one she has in the video, i think) and drosera capensis is pretty easy to find in countries like the UK or the US and can be shipped country wide. Smaller countries might have them too. I know Indonesia has them.

Ant ruined my orchid experience I grow orchid in windowsills. First tiny black ants came to my orchids to feed on sap produced by Francis fox then more ants started to come and I just negligently left it in the fact of memerchophia genes of Francis fox with hollow pseudo bulbs so and so the ant relationship thingy with them after few weeks passed I tried to refill the self watering pots with new set of fertilized water when I start to water lots and lots of small black ants came out from the pot potted by Francis fox in selfwatering leca and after cleaning it I left it the problem will not come again soon weeks later those tiny black ants started to take over each self watering pot with leca as their colonies and putting their eggs larvae inside the pots potted in leca I thought nothing will happen and left it here comes the problem mealy bugs started to appear on catasetum leaves and ants doing something with mealybugs and it started to spread to oncidiums pots I just watered the leaves and washed away the mealy bugs and now I have a setback catasetum jumbo Mickey orange and halt rotten Francis fox and self watering pots full of ants what can I do Danny is those ants responsible for mealy bugs but I tried to kill the ant colony by picking 2 sturdy orchid pot with ant colony. sogo yukidien one and sprayed with chemical pesticide and the consequence I'm faced is pot full of dead ants and the Soho yukidien is tightly holds the self watering pot with dead ants I need to wash more than 5 times to remove most of the dead ants can I leave the colony of antz reside in my self watering pots or is there any alternative way to evict the trespassed ants from my self watering pots I'm concerned of mealy bugs
@sjusovare
@sjusovare 5 лет назад
Ants do raise mealybugs the same way they raise aphids, so they are likely the ones displacing those from one plant to the others. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to make ants go away without killing them (they are actually quite useful auxilliaries against many other parasites, so it always annoys me to just kill), However treating the mealybugs (with parrafin) does help (basically,. if ants are there it's that they have a food source around, and the Francis Fox isn't enough to explain colonies in every pots)

My phalenopsis' leaves started yellowing from the top down. The first 2 leaves the yellow even went into the crown. I removed the affected leaves and upper crown and used cinnamon to sell off the cuts. Now the 2 lower leaves are yellowing. all the leaves yellowed from the tip farthest from the crown and progressed to the crown. I dont see any pests, but the edges look a little chewed. If these 2 leaves go, I will be left with 1 leaf....What do you think?

Hi Danni! I'm so glad that Milo is doing well. Poor dear!! I really, really appreciate the "Hacks", so more of these types of videos would be greatly appreciated. Question: do you think the mineral oil will help with thrips? I've had speckled leaves for a long time, and finally found a diagnosis of thrips. I don't want to go through several types of insecticides (as recommended by other orchid specialists), plus those chemicals kind of worry me. Do you have any thoughts on the matter?

I found snails munching on a new orchid purchase, seen in the evening hours (they come out of the substrate at night to do their damage). I was purposely inspecting at that time, because I suspected snails when I noticed a shiny secretion on a couple of the leaves earlier that day. A fellow orchid enthusiast/grower who's been successfully growing and selling orchids for many years, told me to buy 'caffeine' tablets at the pharmacy and dissolve in warm water, then pour/soak the pot for 20 minutes or so, and drain off. I never saw another snail or evidence of snails on the plant afterwards, so I believe it worked! Apparently, the caffeine is toxic to snails and kill them but is perfectly safe for the orchids. I believe it was 2 x tablets per 1 litre of warm water, dissolved.

Yellow sticky papper work well for me (sticked on windows they kinda glow cause of sun) and - yeah it also catch mosquitoes and flies . Raid tabs works for me ....well kinda - i guess -for scale insects best 'remedy' is weak isopropil alchocol - actually I never 'burnt ' orchids or thin leaf plants like ficus benjamin with isopropil but dont go over 50/50% ( water / propil)

Thanks! Probably the most helpful video for me to deal with orchid "fungus gnats"(also just learnt this word instead of flies). I like the idea using the mosquito plug, could you tell which method is (more) effective with it on, the opening windows (air flow) or close to light(attract them to come)? If the device is working, I am thinking about to use even more modern technique, i.e. ultrasonic pest repeller ... just ordered online, will let you know if it works :-)

RePotme.com and other places sell a sticky card that flies, gnats, etc., stick to and can’t get off. RePotme’s is bright yellow if I remember correctly, and the color helps attract bugs. They are very inexpensive and you can slide them into a holder and actually stick in an orchid’s pot. Spread them around the grow space!

Great video, very informative! Question re: the gnats. I"ve read that hydrogen peroxide will kill the gnat larvae, which is right under the surface. Can I just "water" my orchids with it and see how it works? I've started your habit of spraying it on the roots of a new/baby plant when repotting. If it doesn't hurt, could it kill them? I've got gnats, used the Neem recipe you had on another video. They slow down but then they are back again! Right now I have little yellow papers with Vaseline sticking out of them but haven't seen one yet. My puppy licked one of them! LOL I don't think we have the mosquito repellent in the states and I can't find any carnivorous plants right now!

@janicedozier4773
@janicedozier4773 5 лет назад
Hi from the USA, I have tried everything as you outlined with the peroxide and nothing has worked. I have also used a garden spray for houseplants and no effect. I must've sprayed enough h2o2 to break the bank. My last resort is to try immunox as a test and if that doesn't work, then all plants will be tossed, some I've had for 8 years. I am very tired of the battle for my living space and having to wear a mask over my nose. I will start fresh in a few months if possible. I have also had my exterminator leave me insect traps and as I write this, one just flew past my face.

@yomairal2477
@yomairal2477 5 лет назад
Nicci Englezos If you have 3% hydrogen peroxide, you use it straight like that. If it is more, than you have to dilute it to be 3% with water. In Danni's case with 6% (double the amount 3x2=6), she adds the same amount of water that is in her bottle of hydrogen peroxide no matter what size to cut down by half. Adding less water than the same amount of that is in her bottle would give a different percentage. So be careful in getting a big bottle of hydrogen peroxide since it needs to be stored in a dark bottle, notice hers and the one you buy for it to last. Smaller bottle may be best. Sorry about the length of this but wanted to explain and give you an answer instead of waiting so long. Just saw this too.
