Today we talk more on the subject of seedlings, some care tips and some potting options, as part of my regular viewer questions!
▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
Orchid seedlings are, like the name suggests, small orchids sprouted from seed. They are young and much more sensitive than their mature counterparts. It is common to find orchid flasks on the market, which need to be open and then the seedlings potted.
The most common and, in my opinion, most suitable medium for most people is sphagnum moss. Even if very water retentive, moss can be wonderful if used correctly. Here is how to best use it with orchids • How to use sphagnum mo...
Other media and setups can work too, if the environment helps and if care is taken for particular inconveniences the media have. LECA will pull salts on the surface, it doesn't take much to damage fragile seedling roots. Bark tends to dry fast and needs more attention with watering. But in the end there is a great medium for everyone. If you are unsure, I would go with tiny pots and sphagnum moss.
If you have pictures of your orchids that you'd like to send me, you can use askmissog at gmail and I will reply with an email or video. If you send me pictures you agree to let me use them in my videos, if you don't want me to, don't send me any mail at this address!

I would definitely be interested in seeing a deflasking video! I would also be interested in hearing you talk about the differences between seedlings and keikis, how are they different (other than one coming from a seed and the other growing on the plant) and if there are differences in how they should be treated etc

Hi Dani, I've seen many of your videos since 2016 and all are excellent; thanks for sharing your knowledge 😉. I live in the Caribbean and I bought a Vanda seedling 1 1/2 years ago. I hung it under a tree in a very small basket with some small cuttings of Tillandsia Usneoides (Spanish Moss) on top of the 3 tiny roots of the Vanda. Well this seedling has grown some serious long roots and is looking very healthy and pretty big for its years. I do water 2Xday. I do know our climate is excellent for orchids 😉

As a beginner I like working with the seedlings or the younger plants. I think they have more active growth than the mature ones which is encouraging to me .because I ‘ve killed off more mature orchids than seedlings

Oh, I also bought the Cymbidiella from PL, mine was purchased in May and I planted it in cocopeat, that's my preferred medium for smaller orchids, and it's doing amazing, despite a black fly infestation that punctured it's poor leaves. Mine has been kept on a Vest facing balcony and it has been growing like crazy, it's tripled in size and it is a water hog. It also has lots or roots, almost took over its pot (which is actually a plastic cup). I find cocopeat really nice to use, since it's airy and fluffy, but compact enough to keep the roots moist most of the time.

I recently did the same on an absolutely gorgeous Cattleya that a grower sent me when two orchids I ordered had infections. I live in a sub-tropical climate and should have immediately repotted into a pot with holes like the rest of my collection. ALL of the roots are gone and the smallest psuedobulb died but it still looks great. It had a new growth at the time so I have my fingers crossed! Did yours perk up?

I don't want to see you go trough the trouble of having to raise a bunch of seedlings of the same orchid, but what I would want to see is you crossing 2 different Phal or Catt breeds, maturing the seeds and growing them yourself. I know it takes quite a lot to be able to accommodate this, but honestly a well sealed glass box is enough. I have full faith in you to be able to actually get some good results... in 5+ years, haha! I definitely agree that sphagnum moss is the best medium for orchids, but little things add up if you have a lot of plants to end up making quite a big 'problem'.

You should do one for a vandaceous type orchid. You can do a update for these seedlings. Once the seedlings are well established, you can keep some of them and the rest can be used for a give away.

Hello Dani, I just want to tell what is told in the latest magazine of "Die Orchidee" (german orchid society magazine) on the topic of fertilizing recently deflasked seedlings. Dr Norbert Dank suggests to water the seedlings with a strongly concentrated fetilizer solution because the concentration of nutritious salts in the medium of the flasks is much higher than later in the planting medium (he plants his seedling also in sphagnum moss). So the first watering has an EC of 2000 microS/cm! Later on he waters them like the adult plants (450 microS/)cm.

Hi, there are a few fundamental issues that I can see here. One rule of math is that when we want to work with 2 components, we need to convert them to the same measuring unit. Comparing the ppm of agar with the ppm of fertilizers is like comparing sugar with table salt. A 2k reading of sugar in a quantity of water might not harm plants, while table salt in the same quantity would seriously damage them. The difference is the nature of the salt and its properties. So we need to bring agar and fertilizer into the same unit to compare them, which is impossible. In that 2k reading of agar we don't find the classical fertilizer table contents, but other salts and sugars too. Then, a 2k fertilizer solution is unused by even the hungriest orchid, at maturity, in growth mode. How would a small seedling use up all those nutrients? It is a waste. Also, the agar solution is made to last for at least a few months of the seedling life, it can consume it gradually, as the nutrients are in soluble form at all times. They might also be produced gradually by the bacteria in the agar. Fertilizers can be dosed whenever we please and they usually don't stay perfecly disdolved and dispersed, unless we keep seedlings in straight water, which we don't do. A 600ppm reading left visible salt marks on my working table, can you imagine how a 2k solution would look when dry? The build up will be there, as roots are not present in the entirety of the moss. So in my opinion, a mild solution is the safest bet, as agar is not equal to commercial fertilizer and life in a bottle is not life in air. We fertilize to feed, not because we need to meet a ratio of something. Feeding is different from plant to plant. So personally I would not do such experiments on my plants, when I fail to see the logic, I might be wrong, but in the end it's my orchids and my money at risk here :p ps: not sure what 2k ms is in ppm, but I took a reading with my tds, it would be at about 1 k ppm.. still super much.

Some Orchids flower as seedlings so I know that isn't the way to tell, but can't find anywhere information to specify the differences. Any information would be great since there are differences in growing seedlings and mature plants. Thanks

Oh, Dany, I am so afraid! I've purchased from Secret Garden here in Romania 2 summer blooming species seedlings: phal hieroglyphica and phal cornu cervi. Cornu cervi has more fleshy and thick roots, and it was repotted by SG in moss (because it was purchased later), it's doing fine, but the hieroglyphica is very fragile, the roots are very thin and it came potted from the grower in some bark. I put it in leca and I keep it moist because I don't have moss at home. I noticed a root starting to rot, but not inside the media, at the top, near the stem. Should I let it be or cut it?

As a plant tissue culture scientist, seeing someone put plants in a plant tissue culture vessel where you can't remove the plants without breaking the vessel makes my blood pressure rise. What a ridiculous and completely unnecessary thing to do which involves risk to both the customer as well as the plants. 🤦 🤦 🤦 🤦 🤦 That said, when I've seen orchid "flasks" for sale near me, they're almost always in the usual plant tissue culture vessel I most commonly use which is basically a sterile 500ml plastic deli tub. Not nearly as cool looking as a narrow mouth glass bottle, but much much more practical!
