I know it's 60 years, but you're inspiring. I just started with orcas. That's a nice shade house.

Rick L. I'm going out again to purchase a drill with wood bits! I am using your advice from an earlier video and buying a relatively inexpensive drill to begin mounting orchids. Thanks for this demonstration. Date: May 12, 2018

Nicely done Rick! I've been watering early in the morning just cause it's still to cold at night and I don't want to keep bring my plants back in.

I never had any intention of mounting an orchid..but you've really made me want at least one lol. Seriously want a dendrobium..it's not a phal!
@rickl.orchids
@rickl.orchids 6 лет назад
lol.........phals are not the easiest orchids to grow.......just my opinion.......they are such poor shape when we buy them .....we spend the first 6 months just trying to fix the damage done before we get them....Dens are very easy, cattleys as well........they love to grow...
@giggalz

I am running out of space may have to mount some and that irks me because that means watering more lol hopefully soon will come down south to visit my parents in La. maybe i will get some orchids and bring them back with me! What I would live is to bring back some bougainvilleas with me! I love them!
@rickl.orchids
@rickl.orchids 6 лет назад
bougainvilleas are so beautiful........choose the correct wood for your mounts and they wont need much more water then potted orchids......thicker denser wood will hold moisture longer....I made that mistake on a few......La orchid connection has great orchids.....maybe bag babies where you folks live.........
@staceyranalli6216

Rick L. Orchids lol I grew them when I lived there and I loved them because stressing them made them bloom more! My type of plant 🤣 “you folks” lmao let me tell ya the seafood is epic there and miss my dad’s jambalaya lol oh man I am so missing home. Wish my dad still had his airboat. I would tell you and your wife come there and take y’all in the swamp and you can get cypress straight from there. Oh I could take Mr Jackson! Dad has a beautiful cypress in his yard on the the tickfaw river and just beautiful. Sunrises and sunsets I see on the river on his deck are what postcards are made of. River so smooth it is like a mirror. Ok enough calling Dad and setting a date to visit him lol need time on the river. Oh and get some fishing in. Like my husband says “you can take move me away from the country and river but can’t move the country and river from me”.

I'd suggest paulownia wood. Its naturally rot and termite resistant, doesn't warp, and is far lighter. Love the dendrobiums, I'll be grabbing a dendrobium hekounense next month, it will be my first dendrobium, but not my first sympodial.

Very nice looking mount. I am doing a good amount of mounting and remounting here pretty quick. Do you show on one of your videos aan orchid that just didn’t want to come off this easily, and how you handled the process. I enjoy your videos,very helpful and educational.
@rickl.orchids

.....Thank you for the kind words......I dont think I have a video like your asking about......If an orchids is happy it will attach to its mount, very well......A happy orchid,... on good wood....really shouldnt come off its mount very easily......and I wouldnt want to remove it.. .In the case with this dendrobium, it was on a piece of red oak and wasnt happy, wouldnt attach its roots very well, and I was noticing discoloration as the wood released tannic acid......common with red oak I now realize......I now only use cedar or cypress wood for my mounts.....
@theweirdplantguy4873
@theweirdplantguy4873 2 месяца назад
@@rickl.orchids thank you for the reply. I understand now better what you mean. I am guessing that is why a lot of people just find a bigger mount to attach the current mount to and let the plant grow out.

Can soft woods like pine be used? We have an abundance of what we call slab wood here in Wi. It can be from any local wood from very soft to very hard. From cotton wood to walnut. almost any pine tree.
@rickl.orchids
@rickl.orchids 5 лет назад
great question...…...soft woods or wood that is very porous tends to absorb and then hold on to nutrient's…..Cedar is an exception...…..they love it...….oak, hickory, pine, etc have caused issues in my collection...….Cedar is my preferred wood for mounts...
@southfloridaorchidsoutdoor8497
Rick, I love mounts! Fun fact is I learned how to use a power drill because I kept bothering my boyfriend to make all my holes for the mounts 🤣 I too see some remounts in my future but nothing needed right now. Did you clean the roots with anything? I know a lot of people recommend hydrogen peroxide....And are you a fan of trimming dead roots?
@rickl.orchids
@rickl.orchids 6 лет назад
thank you and great questions.........I trim what i need to......the rest will help anchor the plant......till it grows new roots......as for H202 (hydrogen peroxide)....or Physan20 ....etc.........not a big fan, kills off good bacteria as well as can burn roots........I never use it, or anything like that on my roots or plants.....but thats just me.......love you questions and comments.......thank you
@southfloridaorchidsoutdoor8497
Rick L. Orchids thank you!

Hi Rick. I certainly enjoy watching you mount orchids. We all have different techniques. My usual way is with that old slippery fishing line that is a pain to knot, and there is a whole lot of wrapping going on there. Lol. I like your easy way much better. I just need to learn to handle the drill. Don't you use spaghnum moss on your mounts?
@rickl.orchids
@rickl.orchids 6 лет назад
Hi Blanca....I used fishing line when I started, but its hard for me to handle, it has tendency to cut into plants, and it disappears, and I end up forgetting about it......till its caused damage.....I prefer cotton twine or the green twist tie.......the twine will rot and fall off after 5-6 months and they are attached with roots by then....the green twist tie.......I remove after a few months.....this is easier in my opinion......especially for tying them on.........just takes a few pieces.... .....go buy a small cordless drill..one that fits your hand, not to heavy.........small one.....your not building cabinets.......only working on mounts.....and then just get a piece of trash wood and drill a bunch of holes till you feel comfortable......wont take you 15 minutes....use gloves, and take your time.....after that.....a few well placed holes and an orchid is easily tied on.......I never wrap around the entire mount anymore.......much easier and holds the orchid better this way..........if the plant has poor roots and need help getting hydrated, I will add some moss........this one has great roots......just needed a new home to hang on.....the moss will break down and cause ph issues........so only if really needed.....then removed a few months later.........have a wonderful week........Rick

Rick so i always see amazing drift wood at the park i always hike, and want to get a piece to mount a couple orchids, do u recommend treating the piece of driftwood with anything? Or just mount the orchid on it all natural?
@rickl.orchids
@rickl.orchids 5 лет назад
.......drift wood is fine.....but should know the tree species if possible.......cedar, pitch pine, cypress, ......orchids grow very well on.....you want wood that is naturally resistant to decay......if its fresh water driftwood.......scrub it well, and mount the orchids........if its from salt water.......may need soaking to make it safe.......but to answer.....no treatment needed........scrub it and its ready....

I laugh like a loon every time I hear you say your experience with orchids is minimal. I think since Cedar is naturally abundant in NE Iowa I'll be looking for that for mounts. I am just gobsmacked that you can grow orchids on these mounts, and that in Alabama the humidity is so low, I always figured it would be muggy. This is a lovely mount and I'll be interested in seeing how this plant does. I can see the Engineer at work in your planting/mountings, clips and such. (My Father was a design engineer). Best to you and your Cookie! I wonder if my Steve will ever share my interest in orchids?
@rickl.orchids
@rickl.orchids 6 лет назад
they love cedar Paula, they grow very well on it......Steve will come around, they will win him over as they get bigger.......
@tobiesmom
@tobiesmom 6 лет назад
Rick, I think your orchid growing knowledge and experience has now progressed a bit beyond 'minimal!'. :) Your Dendrobium will do really well on that piece of cypress - the roots will really start to grow now! Do you have any more orchids mounted on the red oak?
@rickl.orchids
@rickl.orchids 6 лет назад
one or 2 small catt seedlings.......they will come off as well......other than that not much......thank you so much for all the kind words...

Is that orchid on the mount at the beginning of the video, with the gorgeous purple flowers a dendrobium? Or a phal? If you ever get all of your orchids in blooming mode, they are going to be showstoppers! :)

Rick, How do you water/soak the mounted dedrobriums & how often, whole mount or just roots? Do you remove the bloom stalks after blooming? I have 3 new seedlings mounted on chunks of fibrous root block. After seeing yours I want Ed to make wooden mounts 😀 We love the videos. Thanks so much...we are new to dendrobiums.
@rickl.orchids
@rickl.orchids 6 лет назад
......I soak them at least once a week.....more if they are really growing strong......not the entire plant but the roots and as much of the mount as I can....I wont remove a spike till its been reabsorbed and is dry....dendrobiums are so unique......they have such crazy adaptations to their environments....they are so natural mounted.....wonderful news...

Hi Rick, thank you again for the video.. I am in the process of mounting on some weathered cedar shingles and have acquired some eucalyptus thick and sturdy bark. Do you think this would be appropriate to use for mounts. It is lovely and textured like cork bark. Also your pals in pea gravel... Do our soak the pots or can you just spray them when outside for the summer? I so appreciate your advice. Be well and thank you.
@rickl.orchids
@rickl.orchids 6 лет назад
Sharon....from what i found....eucalyptus bark contains tannins that will harm orchids......I wouldn't use it....cedar shingles are fine as long as they haven't been treated with fire retardant or other chemicals......moss would be a good indicator of clean cedar.....older ones that have or had moss on them are fine....

good question.........if the plant had poor roots......and needed some assistance with hydration I would add some.....this one has great roots and should grow back on very easily........and its in strong growth mode as well...if this was winter inside.....some moss would help......hope that makes sense.....
