I was laying here a little after 2:00 am watching here in Missouri. When you were talking about the lean to and having a place for tools I just smiled. You will do what I am about to explain! lol I put up a 30x40 building in 2010 behind my house. Originally for boat lawn tools and ZTR storage. I got rid of the boat soon after and it turned into a shop. I was in the Masonry business since I could pick up a brick and go with my dad. Retired now. Grandfather was a Carpenter, I loved cars and a brother in law taught me mechanics. I do wood work, metal work and mechanical everything. I opened the back wall and put a 40'x16' lean to on it and am in the process of buying a 40" container to put now two ZTRs and a tractor that I didn't have in and the lawn tools in. Kind of got off track, sorry. I have a 3 car garage on the house with 3 cars. A now 40x46 shop filled and soon a 40' container! Where I was going is you can NEVER EVER have enough room and the part I smiled about, you will be duplicating almost every tool you own. I walk down and back one too many times to get a tool, said that's it and went on a tool shopping spree! lol Keep doing what you're doing, that wood shed packed looks pretty wild! I wonder the weight in there...

My suggestion to you is what I would do with the expansion of your workspace by adding 16 feet of new width for the entire length of the structure. I would advoid partitioning the space with a wall. Some of my reasons are added costs, limiting access from side, making use of layouts more restricted and fixing the layout before I actually used the added space, and as the wall can be easily added in the future after you have been active in the new area which allows test various use patterns/layouts while allowing a no cost actual a reduction in initial construction expense while you test use the new space. Need to cut the embankment behind the logs back, use the blocks to build a wall, then place fencing top of the embankment. Keeps some one from falling off, (grand kids) as well as bouncing the noise of the equipment back towards the woods. More room, and happy neighbors. Keep it going..!!!

Levi, I would love working with you. I have never seen firewood stacked so neatly! Even when you are stacking boards off the mill they are piled so neatly. I know your dad expects that from you and maybe even thinks he doesn’t need to compliment you for it. My dad was the same way! Anyway, I wish he would compliment you once in awhile in the videos. You deserve it. If he had to hire people off the street he would maybe realize more what an asset you are to the team.

For me i like a smooth surface, it's just nicer on the eyes. Good to see Levi doing his thing, family working together, can't beat it!! Have a day!! Jay from Pa.

Mike, I am the one that suggested to sand your ruff cut boards, another trick you might try to give the boards a weathered color/look is to paint the raw wood with a vinegar/iron mixture - fine steel wool dissolved in vinegar. Wash the steel wool with dish washing soap to remove the oil on it and put it in a 1/2 to 3/4 full quart jar of white vinegar. Paint on the wood, and let dry. Gives the gray look of weathered wood. Try different strength's of the mixture, stronger = darker/ grayer.

Just a suggestion for your interior siding I would put up some black roofing felt to back it for in case of shrinkage after installing it all you will see is black. It’ll create some depth to it also. Even with installing it tight to each board you will still get some movement in the wood.

Nice to preventative maintenance done properly, as it is always the way to finish before starting your next work job. You do a good job blowing away all the saw dust as that can cause hours of cleaning if you let it build up and solidify of the saws main wearing parts (especially caked on Pine resin). Keep safe and enjoy your day and thanks for another informative video.

I watched you trying to oil the bid chain on the sawmill. Unless the recommendation is to use a certain weight of oil, there is a product that will make cleaning and oiling chains very, very easy. Dirt bike riders use it frequently to keep their chains clean and lubed. Comes in a spray can and when you spray it, it comes out foaming. Might save you some time and aggravation.

Mike, sawmill sawdust idea. Cut two of the plastic containers that the totes come with at a 30 degree angle or so and screw them to a pallet each. Then when they fill up you can forklift them out and dump them. It's not going to be perfect but there will be a lot less shoveling involved. You might only need 3 halves but for the real long logs you can have one on the end.
@ronallen6578

Good morning sir, Looks like you were cutting 3 times the wood on the mill with Levi's assistance. Definitely worth the expense and it will free you up for other things. PM on equipment is underrated by a lot of folks. I can't think of a more useful way to spend my time than staying up on it. It definitely pays in the long run and may even prevent a breakdown out on a job site by perhaps finding a weak link in your chain of mechanical items. It has me. Don't believe youve ever shown that wood storage packed so full. Nice--huh?? 😁😁

I watch another channel called Donn DIY, he uses the IBC totes for storing logs also, he cuts the bladders in half at a 45 degree angle and sits them on the top of the tote baskets like pointed hats to keep the logs dry. He ties them on at each corner with cable ties so they can't blow off😀.

Hey, Mike! Have you given any thought to using a Wood-Mizer Out-Feed Table with the Board Return? Seems to me it would be much easier on the 'Morgan Bodies'; and with the lean-to side being added, you'd have the room for it? I've seen the table being used and it sure saves a lot of running around in handling the boards that are coming off the saw......... Tks, D!

Mike, great video. If you’re putting the pine on your interior walls I’ve found out from past experience, put some kind of dark material over the insulation so if & when your pine shrinks & it will you can’t see the shiny insulation through the cracks in the boards when it shrinks. A lot of times I paint with a dark color in corners etc. so you can’t notice the wall behind the material you’re putting on. Again, great video. I wait for the next one to pop up. My suggestion to clean up the rough Timber would be to use a burnishing machine with the right flappy desk wheel. For how much you have to do it would be worth investing in one. It won’t take out your saw marks, but it will take off all your stringy bits.

Maybe the first skim-cut with a planer and then the sander, to save you a little time. Or, and/or a drum sander. If you get a big enough sander, you can sand a tabletop. I normally liked doing a little skim-pass on the backside with the planer to flatten it some, and then finish the other side (it worked out better that way).

I have a question that you can probably answer. When you cut lumber from a saw log, what percentage of that log is considered waste. I know it can all be burned, but how much of the log is NOT used for lumber? I would think that would be something one would like to know in the business.
