So where exactly is the border? 5? Is the order or magnitude of 5.98736 = 6 or 5?

There is differing interpretations for where the “middle” is. So in some versions 5 has a OoM of 1, in others 0. Tour example is neither 5 nor 6. It’s 1. It’s about the nearest power of 10. So that number is closer to 10 than 1 so 10^1, so 1

Since OoM numbers are on a logarithmic scale (multiplying/dividing by factors of 10,) the halfway threshold for rounding is technically the square root of 10 which is approx 3.16) So a number like 297 is closer to 100 than it is to 1000, 2.97x10^2 would round down. But a number such as 378 is closer to 1000 than it is to 100 when dealing with powers of 10, so 3.78x10^2 would round up since it's greater than 3.16.

On e way to round up is if it’s >5 but there is also argument to round up if the number greater than half the indice. Eg 10^1.5 = 31.6 so 32 has order of magnitude 3 not 2

Why powers of ten ? Does nature favor ten ? What if we all counted naturally in hex, would orders of magnitude mean the same thing ?

This is why; An order of magnitude is an approximation of the logarithm of a value "relative to some contextually understood reference value, usually 10," interpreted as the base of the logarithm and the representative of values of magnitude one. Pay close attention to the quotes

Thus if we naturally counted in base 16, our contextual reference would probably be that as would be for any other base other than 10 Hope that helps

this is terrible explanation, to normal people: Its basically just how many decimals something has. adds or removes them based on magnitude positive/negative
