My special needs son really likes the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad and hopes that real soon or sooner than soon that the entire line is restored and used again for both freight and passenger trains but he does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality!

What memories of a locomotive engineer and fireman for Southern Pacific. Used to haul Loaded chip cars from Tillamook to Hillsboro. Seeing The old F7 on your video remind me of the days catching them on the run from Brooklyn Yard Eugene Oregon And between Klamath Falls and crescent lake. As a fireman I was required to go back in the F7 or Old covered wagon to reset the oil governors and check the water when they would get an alarm. The noise was deafening also the automatic air brakes at that time vented right into the cab and the noise from that was also deafening. Many guys got settlements from southern pacific for hearing aids from that period.

Great video! I've ridden the Oregon Coast Scenic many times, but have only gone as far as Batterson. Last summer I drove all the way up to Salmonberry to see how it looked, since OCSR hasn't been able to run up there for the past few years, and the track has become overgrown again. It's amazing how remote it is. OCSR says reopening the line to Salmonberry is at the top of their projects list. There's a plan to convert the washed out track in the Salmonberry Canyon into a non-motorized trail that'll repurpose the former railroad right of way between Manning, northwest of Hillsboro, and Tillamook, being built as rail-with-trail from at least Salmonberry to Tillamook. OCSR leases the track from the Port of Tillamook Bay between the Tillamook Air Station and Enright, five miles up the Salmonberry Canyon from Salmonberry, about 48 miles.

I am lucky enough to have riden on all these RR's. Would have to say the Sumpter Valley and OCSR would be my favorites. Shame the McCloud is now mostly gone, was a nice ride back in the day.

I delivered some mill equipment from the 40's and 50's to these guys not that long ago, they were going to restore them and use the machines to fabricate new parts for their locomotives

Terrific! Very lovely area. I've spent much time at the Oregon coast but not in this area. It was great seeing Rockaway and Wheeler. Just curious - #25 is a very clean-running steamer. But on the run-by's, she is belching out major smoke. How dey do dat? :) Close a damper or something?

Well, the engine's oil fired, and the way that the fireman controls the amount of fire in the firebox is called the "firing valve"(basically a throttle for how much flames shoot into the firebox). You know when the fireman's really got a fire going when the engine is belching out black. Other times, there may be little to no fire in the engine, when its relatively clean.

My preference for watching train videos are those with steam locos in them but not diesels.

I was last at Tillamook in 2019, and the SD9s at the air museum had already been scrapped. Only one remained at Garibaldi for MofW operations.

the 4406 is still standing. I was there in 2021 and it's still (on the outside at least) in one piece. I asked OCSR if they would ever acquire it, and someone there said they would like to but they don't have the current space or expertise to properly maintain it, as their knowledge base is in steam not diesel. 6139 is the one in Garibaldi, that I think POTB still owns (along with 4406) and had leased to OCSR, but I believe it developed mechanical issues and has been sidelined. 4406 is historically significant, not just being one of the last SD9s on the Tillamook branch but also the only one of SP heritage and last high hood. Hopefully that means it'll be spared from being scrapped. Update: I learned recently that 4406 has been scrapped and taken apart. Not sure if any of it will be salvaged for spare parts. I believe OCSR still leases 6139 in Garibaldi, though that locomotive has been sidelined with some sort of mechanical issue for a few years now.

Also I was told at the time (in the 70s) The Tillamook branch was The steepest railroad in the Northwest United States. You could look up and see your caboose over your head how do you winded Down the mountain.

That pier in Garibaldi isnt the longest in OR, Port of Astoria has longer ones.

Great video of a rare run to Salmonberry. Hopefully, more trips are planned for that section in the future. Wonder why the crossing signals didn't activate.

my understanding is there's a bridge between Batterson and Salmonberry that needs to be repaired, and as a result they've become overgrown again. OCSR says it's a priority to reopen the railroad to Salmonberry, and they'd like to possibly run monthly excursions there from Rockaway (probably just during nice weather months like in summer).

Once they have more excursions up that way, I believe they're gonna have to get them working again or install new ones.

If I was Governor Tina Kotek I would use the executive Powers to Halt The Salmonberry Trail Project and I would demand a Stop to the Trail Project. I would Cut funds for the Salmonberry project and I would get the 1.4 bills dollars from the federal government to rebuild the track between banks and Tillamook and I would expand The population of Tillamook county to being a population like San Diego Houston Baltimore Denver Philadelphia And Chicago to help create the Mecca of railroading to expand Amtrak service to Tillamook from Portland and Seattle. And I will create the Tillamook Zephyr.
