Original comments: "Here's a largely uncirculated Oregon show that may be of interest. (...) It's a fine capture from an interesting Oregon lineup that finds Jamey Haddad in the percussion seat. According to info on etree, Trilok Gurtu did a show with Oregon in March of 1991, but was then touring as part of John McLaughlin's Trio by late April of that year, and then was back again in Oregon for a couple of European shows in the late summer. Later Oregon shows shown in 1991 saw them playing as a Trio, which would be their primary format for a few years to come.
I'm not sure if Jamey Haddad did more shows with Oregon than this one. He fits in quite nicely here in Chicago, and the rest of the group seem to be enjoying themselves in his company. Some of the stage talk mentions them doing a few songs not usually done at this point in time, but played here because of his presence. For those unfamiliar with him, he'd been associated with Joe Lovano, Paul Winter, and Billy Drewes up to the time of this show, and he's done lots of work since those days, probably most prominently with Paul Simon. Track 20 here, Always, Never, and Forever would be the title track of the next Oregon album released after this show, and Gurtu was on that recording, so I don't know if more had ever been planned with Haddad, or if this was truly just him subbing for Trilok for this, and possibly, a few other gigs.
An article in the Chicago Tribune archive can be found online that alludes to the Cubby Bear, seemingly a Sports Bar, starting a new jazz series at this point in time, and this Oregon show was mentioned there. The evening ending announcement also mentions upcoming Cubby Bear shows by Billy Cobham and others. Not sure at all how long it lasted as a jazz venue, but it was happening at this point 33 years ago."
