Presented by David Lewis, Ph.D. Cultural Resources Director, Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde
Recorded at McMenamins Kennedy School, Portland, Oregon
Monday, September 8, 2014
Native societies in Oregon have seen monumental changes in the last two hundred years. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Oregon's tribes and bands have witnessed great losses of land to federal government allotment programs; death from European diseases; and the loss of culture and language from assimilation programs at Indian boarding schools. Through all these changes, Native cultures in Oregon have adapted, and continue to thrive and adapt.
David Lewis, Ph.D., Head of the Cultural Resources Department for the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community, will describe what life was like for western Oregon tribes, and examine the changes that resulted from the resettlement of Native lands.
Oregon History 101 is a nine-month public history program series designed to give Oregonians a basic understanding of the state’s significant people, places, and events. Each month, historians will present a chapter of Oregon history, beginning with the earliest peoples and ending with the turn of the twenty-first century. The series will emphasize Oregon’s connection to historical themes in American history, including Native history, early exploration, western expansion, race, gender, and social justice, and the post-industrial economy. Series Editors Dr. Carl Abbott and Dr. William Lang have designed the series and invited many of the state’s most distinguished senior scholars to speak. Each presentation will feature images from the Oregon Historical Society archives and will be filmed and made available on the World Wide Web, along with research guides and other digitized material from The Oregon Encyclopedia and the Oregon History Project.
Many of the images prepared by the speakers for Oregon 101 presentations are copyrighted by institutions other than the Oregon Historical Society. The Oregon Historical Society may not make those images available on the Web, so the PowerPoints have been excluded from the videos.

Michele Ploeser, curious if youre familiar with the Charles Family? Avery & Ruth Wanda Charles(Ruth was Chief Edison Chiloquins sister. I grew up with the Charles family out in west Eugene, the younger Charles kids, well at least before many of them were arrested and sentenced to ridiculous prison terms(Life) we knew them when they arrived in Eugene in the 1970’s. They were escaping the racist violence of the Klamath Sheriffs office & the police in Chiloquin. Several of the Charles boys were likely murdered by Lane county law enforcement. Jerome & Anthony Charles are still considered missing persons in Lane County. Thank you for sharing your research on the beautiful people of the Willamette Drainage system. wʼakʼa

This is the history of my tribe, my people the Cow Creeks of Roseburg OR as well. We were all assimilated into a big hodge podge of Indians at the Siletz and Grand Ronde reservations. This is why I believe we each should be allowed to join any Tribe we choose, because we are so inter-mixed now. I also believe that Blood Quantum should be done away with. Tribe's should allow in WHOever they decide amongst themselves to allow in. No truly Sovereign nation takes another nation's say so for how they run their government...!!

Our capitalist government truly sucks, and it's not getting any better.

There's only two systems that survive, capitalism or Communism, under capitalism at least you have a chance, under Communism only the elite have a chance! Some people think that a democratic socialism would be better, problem is, all Democratic Socialism evolves into Communism because Democratic Socialism is not sustainable.

First I have to say, I love the ways of the indigenous people, they were a simple people that knew how to live with nature and their surroundings, that being said, it was also their downfall, even though I love their way, they were going to be taken over one way or another whether it be by the US, or another Country, at that time in history conquest was inevitable!!

It's a similar story globally. Anywhere White people show up shit hits the fan. They messed with people on 5 continents outside of Europe. ...Antarctica doesn't have many folks. Really, though there shouldn't be reservations for Native People at home. There shouldn't be a Bureau of Indian Affairs (the wrong nation is running things). It's messed up that the USA and Canada still occupies N. America rent free. It's crazy that we speak English from coast to coast. It's wild that so many people don't think about these things.

1 When Britain first, at Heaven's command Arose from out the azure main; This was the charter of the land, And guardian angels sang this strain: "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." 2 The nations, not so blest as thee, Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall; While thou shalt flourish great and free, The dread and envy of them all. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." 3 Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful, from each foreign stroke; As the loud blast that tears the skies, Serves but to root thy native oak. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." 4 Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame: All their attempts to bend thee down, Will but arouse thy generous flame; But work their woe, and thy renown. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." 5 To thee belongs the rural reign; Thy cities shall with commerce shine: All thine shall be the subject main, And every shore it circles thine. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." 6 The Muses, still with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coast repair; Blest Isle! With matchless beauty crown'd, And manly hearts to guard the fair. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves."
