SP 5100 and UP 25198 at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center

Description:
With a busy Union Pacific mainline as a backdrop, the Portland Traction & Co PTC #100 shuffles the SP 4449 and OR&N 197 locomotives to reach the front display spot and SP 5100. Oregon Pacific OPR 1413 brings in the UP 25198 and the 100 places the caboose in front and the locomtives back into the enginehouse. Both 100 and 1413 with their loads then head south on Oregon Pacific tracks. A ride on the Portland Streetcar shows the layout at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center.

When I was there in September they said they were hoping within a few years, like two or three. If they had the money they could do it much faster

At 6:24, You May Notice A String Holding 4449' Smokebox Door Shut. This Is Because All The Bolts That Would Keep It Shut Have Been Removed.

compressed air, they use it to move the 4449 when it's not fired up.

NKato no they don’t use compressed air to move her. That’s just a biproduct of the pistons and valves moving as it turns them into a large compression assembly.

4449 is currently undergoing her federally mandated rebuild and overhaul as her boiler certificate expired back in 2013. The crew members have said they aim to have her up and running again in late 2014 or early 2015.

+Niazkilam 98 It's the valves opening and closing as the wheels turn. Even though no steam is being admitted, there is still a pressure differential that is created and released as the valve gear works.

+deloreanman14 If you put steam pressure in to the cylinders, then the cylinders do work and turn the wheels. If you turn the wheels (by puling the locomotive), the wheels move the cylinders, and you have a monster 250-ton air compressor :) (I know it's not entirely true, but the principle is the same - energy and motion on opposite ends of the system.)
