June 28 on The Story: The U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision in the Johnson v. Grants Pass case Friday morning, ruling 6-3 that cities can enforce bans on homeless people sleeping outside even when there is no shelter available. It's the most significant case before the high court in decades on the issue and is expected to have wide-ranging impacts around the county, although Oregon state law will prevent any immediate changes on Portland's streets. Still, local homeless advocates were quick to condemn the decision, saying it amounts to criminalization of poverty.

We criminalized drug use and public drunkenness. Yet that never gets enforced.

This is not an issue of a lack of compassion. There's been plenty of that. What is needed is accountability. Giving people everything they need while requiring nothing just makes poorly behaved dependent people. God helps those who help themselves. There's a lesson in that.

Is it now illegal to not have a home? When these people can’t pay fines, they’re gonna wind up in jail. Here is some accountability for you. You’re gonna have to pay for their jail stay. Where are they supposed to go? To the suburbs. How about holding the corporations And hedge fund companies accountable for buying up so much of the housing supply in the United States and artificially inflating prices.

@@stevem2700 I believe the public isn't compassionate. They just want them to camp outside of the city, not outside there front door. I have no problem providing porta potties and portable showers and even a meal everyday, but I also want accountability. They need to work for what they're receiving. As long as we continue to provide them with tents and food and not require them to give back in any way this will never end.

If you move them out of the city limits, where are they going to clean up the parking lots? Who’s gonna take them back-and-forth to do that? No matter what the solution we’re all gonna wind up paying something, we can house them in jail, which is quite expensive. Much cheaper to provide them with some type of public housing. These people will never find jobs without an address. Not many employers will hire somebody without an address, or the ability to take a shower and clean yourself up for a job interview. And no matter what you do there are always gonna be Undesirable behavior in society.. Freedom is messy. I have been homeless myself. Not drug addicted, or unwilling to work. I do take some responsibility for that, I did not see that the business deal I made with somebody was going to go bad and they ripped me off. I was young and it was all the assets I had and could not pay my rent. Should I have been jailed or fined for that, I don’t think so. Or looked at by people passing by as some kind of scumbag, and their cruel judgments. Almost no one was willing to help me out of the situation. Not the churches, not the government. They just assume I should be in jail as well. No compassion or love. I was fortunate enough to find someone, an immigrant from the Middle East, who helped me out. I walked into his store and told him I was hungry and had no money. I said when I get on my feet, I would pay him back. He provided me with With some bread and some meat and the directed me to a friend of his that could put me up. It was a lifesaver. I was very fortunate that I happened to walk in the right store at the right time and asked the right person, not so many people are that lucky.

Oregon should do what Florida just did: criminalize public camping, generally, but create designated spaces for public camping that prohibit drug and alcohol use and also have social services there to support job training and sanitation.

I totally agree, we need to be more like Florida. Oregon is probably the most corrupt state in the us. I think they should look up to states like florida and what they do. I hope they listen but I doubt it because the bureaucracy doesn’t care they are in it for the money unfortunately..

public camping spaces in every town and city is good. Problem is some zoning and health ordinances and fussy local citizens and that creates red tape and creates obstacles to getting more of these provided. Some towns think they need to spend thousands of dollars just to build camp grounds,when all they need is some running water facilities,public bathrooms.

I believe the following should be enforced: A) the homeless cannot sleep within city limits. Their tents must be outside of the city limits. B) Any type of assistance, which includes food and tents, requires that each person must work. There are many parking lots, in public places that need trash cleanup. I personally could spend all day walking around picking up trash and sweeping parking lots. Refusal to work, no public assistance given. End of sentence.

The problem with all the comments that say just build more homes...we tried that for 10 years with Housing First which requires NOTHING of the homeless. No rehab or recovery, no work, no participation...out of respecting their "dignity" and free will. That's not how Human beings work. And it'd simply not fair to everyone else required to follow the rules, pay their rent, give to the community. Yes, build more efficient and cheaper housing in general so all people have more affordable housing, instead of building free housing for some.
@Aldarionz9

free housing for some is like helping those who are mentally challenged after years of drug alcohol addictions,and they cant function well to take care of their own home,or pay rent,or work.They are the ones who need free housing if they are ill but many of the other mentally healthier homeless need temporary transitional housing.

These people started off homed. Their drug use and alcoholism and subsequent poor behavior alienates friends and family from helping them. They homeless by choice of actions. Most are on some form of public support already. It goes to drugs and alcohol. See what these encampments look like. This is exactly what any housing will look like days after giving them feee housing. It’s ignorant to think otherwise. You cannot help those that do not want to help themselves. But one thing is for sure. Start giving things way you will make more of them! Dealing with them more directly and they won’t like it. They will either go away or want to fix themselves. Their choice. Being soft on them enables them. Accept that or give up your community.

People are closer to homelessness than they realize. This effects everyone of us. The more we criminalize the outcomes that stem from capitalism the more we criminalize each other. We need more compassion in the United States for our fellow countrymen, countrywomen, and all those who share our community. How does this leave a better future for our children except to further punish and imprison more of our children with dubious reasoning?

It is not compassionate to give people special status and require no laws be followed by them while at the same time they disrupt the freedom, safety and enjoyment of their lives. It is not compassionate to say homelessness is the problem while ignoring drug addiction and mental illness. It is not Capitalism's fault. How obtuse.

@@user-zy3qj2hb2s poor houses and orphanages is what we do need since there is so many unparented adults and children. rehab facilites for the mentally ill and addicted is important. But you cant say all homeless are villains,since the housing is unaffordable in this country in cities mainly. People lose hope and get damaged and then if you give up on them,they become worse. Then so they have to have a good healing places to lodge and theylll want to ask for help and lodging if they are mentally normal but just economically disadvantaged and want to eventually get back on their feet,but the abnormal division of the homeless are the one who would not want the help,and so its those ones if they are not going to go to rehab and healing houses but have the opportunity they should be forced to go if its good for them to be healed mentally to escape from addictions.Also the homeless should be allowed to have therapy pets with them ,but some shelters dont allow pets,and so this is important to allow them to stay with them as part of the healing process.
