Oregon's season opener against Idaho was a dud as FCS Idaho pushed them to the brink of a humiliating defeat. Should Oregon fans be in full-blown panic mode that the season will be a massive disappointment?
On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin talks about the first performance of transfer QB Dillon Gabriel. 41-49 for 380 yards and 2 touchdowns somehow leaves something to be desired--but he was not a primary issue on Saturday. 11:07
A lot of Ducks had uninspiring performances in week 1, but it was not all bad. Headlined by Brandon Johnson, several Ducks had outstanding first games wearing green and yellow. 22:45

My game notes: 1. Dillon isn’t Nix (yet). He was unable to throw down the field or see down field. And no one can say “Oregon’s Dudes couldn’t get open vs Idaho”. They were open all over the field if you watch the tape. 2. Lanning is making big mistakes and he isn’t learning from them. Most of his loses he rolls the dice, gambles big, or changes the game plan big time & it doesn’t work (like he didn’t vs WA in the Championship last yr). 3. James was the hot running back and the Ducks went away from him to get Whittington his 12 carries too. Those 12 carries were a waste of time. James would have ran for 150-200 if he got 22-25 carries and we would have dominated. This is besdides the super obvious Oline issues.

I think that Oregon is doing fine, it’s early preseason and most teams are working out kinks and new player chemistry , it’s definitely way too early to freak out just because they didn’t pound Idaho by 50 points, I would be more selective in which sports media I listen to and pay more attention to metrics and statistics, Oregon is rated in top 6 nationally with a pretty doable schedule…..remember to breathe….
@darrenmcnamee339

Two points of thought. Problems with the offensive line are glaring. Idaho coaches brought to the attention to refs Ajani's alignment early during the game. After watching the film and comparing Bo, Dillon, and their footwork. On 3 and 5 step drops, Bo was anywhere from half a yard to a full yard deeper. Of course allows for more time for plays to develop. Dillon, could have used his legs 4 times in this game for over 10 yard runs. That dynamic could've loosened up the D line. Regardless, O-line right now is a liability.

DG did not move the pocket nor did he have good pocket awareness. I don't know if this was by design so not to show our hand on film yet. WS offense does better when a QB can move the pocket, that said DG had some passes over the middle that were darts that looked like a pass from Herbert. The receivers did miss two of his long passes. Steve Beuttner, a backup defensive end hit a 56 yarder in his only attempt in 1972. I remember the announcer thinking it must be a trick play because Ken Woody was the team kicker. This is Texas tech all over again. If ur a troll I expect it, if ur a fan be a fan and support your f@cking team!! If they continue to play like this then fine complain. None of the other big programs would attach their own team after a bad performance…think about that! Offensive line was really bad, but we had backups playing right? It’s going to take a little tune up time. We had a bad game in spots, other areas played really well. Idaho is a good football team. I get it they are FCS but they are still good. Honestly we should have won by two more TDs than we did. If u expect more than that ur living in a fantasy line. Oregon will be just fine. Lanning knows what to fix and he will fix it. I wonder if that was a component?" 👆THIS!!!...and based on what I've seen, over the years of watching him play, I believe it absolutely was this!!! I also believe when he knows his blindside is well protected, he will be more comfortable in the pocket, and he'll definitely see more down the field through his progressions. Spencer, I was at the game and could see the O-line wasn't getting any push and they were really struggling in pass blocking. It would be great if you could find someone to interview who really understands O-line play beyond what is obvious on tape to discuss what the heck actually happened. My working theory is that the new Fall practice schedule of running two simultaneous practice fields with the 1's and 2's mixed didn't give the line enough time to "gel" but that's pure speculation. My worry is that Idaho simply found the right schematic calls to force the line to play super conservatively with disguised pre-snap formations. I know that running a 4-3 with a good mix of slants and stunts (combined with sound tackling) can give an undersized D-line a pretty big advantage... I just want someone who really knows how to break down the film to diagnose the O-line play to understand if this could happen again.
@jeremykropf9487
@jeremykropf9487 17 дней назад
Good solid points. Week 1 games can always be weird for a variety of reasons. First of all smaller teams won't be as beat up and have everyone available. Usually evens the field slightly against deeper teams. Plus veteran d lines that are small and fast and know how to twist stunt and attack can make life a bit miserable. I think we will improve from here and hope this was a wake up call.

He and the coaches know wayyyy more than casual fans about how his guys perform everyday. Every practice debrief started with “we had a good day, but plenty left to work on.”

My biggest concern with this team is their DNA. Championship teams have leaders who hold their team mates to a high standard. Who are Oregons leaders with that championship DNA? I saw Cameron Ward take control of a Miami team and keep his team mates from letting up. He was very vocal and demanding of his team mates. Where were Oregons leaders to keep them from playing down to their competition? It goes beyond the O line. How do you come out like that at home? Where is your sense of pride and competitiveness? That killer instinct that championship teams have is missing. That concerns me more than the O line getting pushed around. I expected Harper to get on his timid O line mates and I didnt see anyone step up and make each other accountable. If they dont have it, it will show soon enough. Mental toughness is lacking in my opinion. Gabriel was balling but he needs to have a dog mentality and demand excellence from this team. Someone has to fill that role.

The offensive line will fall into place with practice, there’s obviously a wealth of data to draw from studying the film. Also, I feel we will get better performances and this one is a throwaway for them. I think the 3 point difference late in the game was also a byproduct tightening the playbook and telling Gabriel not to run. That part concerns me because it’s a limitation from the coaching staff even when facing a season ruining loss. We needed way more over the top tests with the talent we have at wideout. We should feel comfortable giving our guys a chance to make an explosive play.

Just going to have to be more of a pure passing team. Not sure the interior is athletic enough to get to the second level blocks on sweeps or outside runs. DG is accurate and can get the ball to these play makers. Just gotta let it rip.
@John-zz6fz
@John-zz6fz 18 дней назад
Sweeps and outside runs are called to punish a defense that is loading the interior gaps at the line of scrimmage with linebackers or their edges are collapsing in to get QB pressure. Idaho wasn't doing that and was filling gaps and getting pressure with 4 linemen while mostly staying gap sound. Idaho's 3 linebackers had good lateral speed but more importantly read those outside runs and were in position every time to hit the runner at or behind the line of scrimmage. Oregon had a couple of gains with outside runs but only when Idaho misread and had linebackers out of position. Given that Idaho was filling gaps & getting consistent pressure without blitzes I thought Oregon's offensive play calling was sound. They tried a few different things out of the basic bag to test the waters but it's really hard to run if the defense is consistently hitting runners at the line of scrimmage. With Idaho's DB's in cover-2 and sometimes cover 3 taking the soft underneath passes was the smart play. Spencer is right that DG missed some wide open receivers but there's a progression on each play. If the QB is feeling pressure and the #1 is open enough to complete the pass you get the ball out and move to the next play. I didn't see DG looking off his #1 very often as most of the time his #1 was open in a soft underneath route as Stein intends it. Oregon's passing game is designed to punish blitzes but it assumes you can't get pressure with 4. Oregon HAS to get the run game back on track to keep its pass game lethal and that starts with the O-line creating those interior gaps in the first level. Second level blocking is how we turn a 3-4 yard gain into an explosive play but it doesn't matter if we can't get those initial blocks right.

I just can’t agree with the idea that Gabriel was good on Saturday. He was mediocre to fine. He took the easy completion almost every time, he did not vertically threaten Idaho at all, play call/design from Stein or not, that is less than ideal. He never gave his receivers an opportunity to break away from the defense as he would either be a tick late on the short throws, or Idaho would rally immediately to the pass catcher over the middle or in the flat because they knew Gabriel would not threaten them beyond a 20 yard pass at the most.

Bo Nix, Troy Franklin, Brandon Dorlus, Alex Forsyth, are those players you feel that you have replaced though? I just do not see that level of player at Oregon right now. I did not see it at the beginning of the year I did not think Oregon was great. UW did not have a great game either, but we were not picked to be 3rd in the nation to be winners of the Big Ten. UW is picked as nothing basically. Man, you guys are sleuthed into this idea that you supposed to be great. I do not see it. I hope you guys are great and USC is great, and UCLA is great where we all take over this conference: as because I hate the Big Ten. We are all third wheels in this what conference. I hope you all get better. But really do you have anyone better than those past 4 Oregon players? UW got better at RB as getting healthy and adding Jonah Coleman. Better at Edge. Better on D line as we are. Lesser at O line. Better at DB. Denzel Boston is as good as any wide receiver we had. Giles Jackson and Hunter are proven wide receivers.
