In Portland, Oregon, a group of parents and one PE teacher came together to create an alternative way of getting kids to school while clearing road congestion. NBC News’ Jacob Ward shares more details about the “bike bus” where hundreds of students ride together through the neighborhood.

Culdesac is building car free communities in Tempe AZ - hopefully this lifestyle will be adopted in places like downtown and near school neighborhoods!

I feel pure joy biking with my daughter each Wednesday on this bike bus. My husband also rides and lately chauffeurs her on our "long-tail" cargo bike. In fact, he typically bikes her to school here every day, rain or shine. Wednesdays are magical because the energy of riding with the community brings up child-like joy! There is no feeling like it!

This is such a good idea. I’m from the Netherlands and here all the children go to school walking or on the bike. And high school students do more or less the same as the bike bus. They wait for each other on a certain point to bike to school together.

Guess I don't know the meaning of the word "autonomous". I thought it meant self-driving, but these kids are peddling their own bikes. What's autonomous about that?

@@CC-si3cr in context, I believe he is using autonomous to mean independent, ie the child is able to transport themselves, they aren't dependent on a parent for their transportation.

This is great! When I was a little girl in the late sixties in Shreveport La. my father would take all the kids in the neighborhood on bike rides. There was this big hill called thrill hill that he would go down first then supervise until each kid got a turn to go down. I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to go too! I miss seeing kids in bikes!!! This is great to see! One person can make such a difference! everykid in the world should grow up riding bikes

It's sad that while you are reminiscing about your childhood on bikes while watching kids ride by on bikes someone is calling the police on you. All they see is an adult w/o a child watching children. What a world we live in now!

Wow this is incredible. What a way to break American suburban car dependency. I hope this catches on FAST! I'm pretty sure we'd all be a lot happier to see an ocean of kids on bikes in the morning instead of huffing car exhaust and worrying about check engine lights.

Walking and biking to school used to be the norm before parents got paranoid. It's way safer now than it was then, but instead kids are driven everywhere and fed garbage. It's no wonder obesity is such a pandemic.

They said they do this come rain or shine. This would work well in Florida, Texas, Arizona, Cali since they have warm weather year round. This would definitely thrive in major cities like NY, DC, and Philly. Cuts down on traffic, emissions, and improves the health of the kids. I am sure it's hard to start a program like this.

Leave it to Portland to have devised something like this. I wish Denver would adopt something similar. One of most expensive public transportation in the country while still somehow managing to be the absolute worst

On BBC Radio 4 they were talking about Bike Buses on the series, "People Fixing The World". There's also a Bike Bus scheme in Glasgow and many other places around the world. I think it's great. Better for our physical and mental health, and better for the health of the planet. Keep it up! 🙂

I hope disabled children aren't being left out of this bike bus. Hopefully the school has found some ways to accommodate them. That said, I did see some parents carrying their kids on cargo bikes. So that's a start.

There are recumbent trikes for kids, and young kids can fit in a cargo bike. That being said, I don't think the bike bus is something they should give up if they can't accommodate *all* disabled kids, especially since handicapped accessible school buses exist.

@@karikling6751 I'm not saying they should cancel the whole bike bus altogether. I think it's a great initiative that can cut down on carbon emissions and promote independent living for young people. What I'm saying is; I don't want disabled kids to be left out altogether, they deserve to be apart of the movement as much as the able bodied kids. There's plenty of ways they can be accommodated.

Sure, I don't think they should be left out, either. Depending on how big the kid is, they could also go in a child trailer, and kids who use electric wheelchairs should be able to join.@@TheTrailburner

@@sleepycatsqueeze Yes, sadly they don't depend on it for commuting unless they have a job that allows them to store their bikes inside to avoid being stolen outside.

@@duvine3882 Son had bike stolen in front of police/fire/train station... 1st day he rode it. The cops said it happens all the time there. So instead of taking the train he started to drive to work. Never had a car stolen.

Notice that they are not teching the kids how to behave on the road, at some point someone is going to be hit by a car or a truck/bus, and it would be the schools fault,

The organizer of the bike bus has a TikTok where you can see how well it’s actually organized. The road they use is understood to mostly be a biking road, and they have cross-walk guides on bikes for the one main road they have to cross. Plus the kids are really good at spacing themselves out, so no wipeouts or crashes.

It probably takes like 1-2 minutes for all of them to pass through. Now if all of them were in separate cars, then there would be indeed be traffic.
