I had the pleasure of seeing Maestro Savall in concert not too long ago. Unlike his amazing entrance here, he walked on stage casually a few minutes before to tune his gamba. People quieted down, surprised to see him, but he just smiled at everyone and started tuning. The concert was full of laughs and good music; the musicians basically just jammed with each other for two hours! He knows how to make a moment magical when it counts, but overall he is so unpretentious, and instead knows he’s proven himself worthy of all the praise he gets through decades of hard work and beautiful music. He is truly an international treasure.
Ok... THIS here explains how this piece made the world fall in love with opera and left it ever craving for it since! I've never seen a more wholesome presentation of this sublime art.
Hundreds of positive comments and not a single negative one! How rare! But well deserved by this masterpiece of music and great performance by all!!! Bravo!
Jordi Savall is the BEST Early Music conductor of all, and this production is FABULOUS from first note to last and from first scene to last, a feast for the eyes and ears!
Monteverdi and Savall! whats not to like! That entrance - cloak billowing - that was class in a glass, and old Pedro in the high balcony keeping his eye on things, keeping the beat. He's the schiz.
What a sublime artistic production down to every detail. The set and backgrounds, the choreography and dancing, the acting and emotion, are as powerful as the music and singing. As a baroque novice this is utterly transcendent to me. I can’t believe my life is more than half done and I’m just now discovering this. To think, there are people who think music has advanced simply because a computer can be told to copy this. Long live Jordi Savall.
I knew the whole Monteverdi Orpheus in my memory but Savall was so bloody able to give me the truly sensation to face this opera for the very first time and a roaring ocean falled into my soul. Orpheus is like the Sistine Chapel affresco: it is impossible to realize something better.
Gracias Jordi Savall, moltes gracies.
I just attended the Orfeo with Ottavio Dantone and Accademia Bizantina in Cremona Teatro Ponchielli. STUNNING! Dantone is a genius and his orchestra on top!
I keep coming back to this. The music is so strong and healthy. The performance is great and insightful. There is a simplicity and self-evidence about all this that is unforgettable.
Savall and especially the drummer in the balcony look to me like people from the Baroque. Sorry to be trivial. The Baroque is rapidly becoming my favourite period, especially when played as it originally was instead of being modernised.
Gracias Caballerito21.
+amine el boujjoufi Not simply by a man. By a priest. And it was performed in a church. A Hellenic mythology subject. Can you think of any church that would allow this today? We say our age is better, but I can't help it to have doubts about that. Sometimes, it seems people were more open-minded back then.
+Stelios Katsoulis I think they knew how to recognize which subject or story contains some part of holiness, transcendence. I think in those times virtue and spiritual life was more important than today and who talks about virtue talks about ancient greeks. They are our masters in a lot of points. Sadly today religion is most of the time rather political than metaphysical. Sorry if i don't express myself clearly i am not an English speaker.
+Stelios Katsoulis To be fair, in the Middle Ages (and later as well, I presume) the figure of Orpheus was associated with Christ, since Orpheus went into the underworld to liberate his wife.
I know, right? xD Yeah, tbh I think they just imposed a load of shrieky conventions to opera generally after this time to make it sound more pretentious! Liked the Magic Flute pun, btw (I see what you did there)
This great performance of this great opera has only one downside. It only lasts for two hours ;-( Luckily we can hear and watch it again and again and again :-) Thank you for posting it. Grazie! ¡Gracias!
Genial, maravilloso, simplemente perfecto.
I LOVE THIS!!! Jordi Savall brings Music into a New-Life via "Pre-Baroque" instrumentation & lyrical renovating ~ hence we hear & see his selections as they were meant to be! I have other Savall works ~ glad I discovered Jordi 5-years ago! This Video (DVD) is a "Must Have" ~ Gracias, Karlos Bernto
