I am not a farmer, just a home gardener. But I like to watch Ag PhD because of all the info they gave us, it certainly helped me in my gardening knowledge.
It takes 100000 lbs per acre of dry matter to raise OM from 2% to 3%. Considering that OM is also breaking down, it could take a lifetime to slightly build OM levels
Not true. Look up Gabe brown on youtube and see how he has increased his organic matter and made his soils more healthy. He is a regenerative farmer/rancher. Many others like him throughout the USA and Canada doing the same thing.
5:20 "where organic matter get's built from predominatley is roots breaking down in the soil." This is not correct. The buildup of organic matter next to roots is a combination of bacteria, fungi and root exudates. The roots exude organic materials to feed the bacteria and fungi. In exchange, the fungi and bacteria supply trace minerals to the plants. The plants will become healthier as the soils increase microbial life and become more fungal dominent. The fungi and bacteria also protect the plants from pathogens and allow for greater photosynthesis. The higher photosynthesis improves Brix levels which inhibits predation. The higher soil biology not only improves water holding capacity but allows for gas exchange at lower depths enabling roots to grow deeper. This process is the only truly effective way to eliminate soil compaction. Some prairie grasses can grow roots to over 40' in depth. The annual forbes you are calling weeds thrive in bacterial dominent soils. As you improve the organic matter, you will inprove the levels of fungi which will naturally inhibit the growth of annual forbes.
Know it all's, lol. These guys have been around a long time and are very knowledgeable. An unaccredited comment section sharpshooter trying to straighten them out is rather amusing.
