A great reminder. In my opinion, much of one's shopping enjoyment comes from going into a store and basking in the beautiful merchandising. That's a secret to boutiques, which feel like little secret dens of beauty. Department stores started adopting that with little "boutique" sections within the store. I found after working at Nordstrom and SAKS one year and then going home and merchandising my own closet, that it DID change how I felt about the clothes I already owned. And that's when it hit me that some of the "shopping high" we all feel comes from the visual feast of the merchandising rather than the individual clothing items. As a result, by merchandising my closet I was able to get a bit of that high every day. And like you suggested, I rotate my entire closet twice a year, where I actually clear it totally out, switch seasons, and re-merchandise. That way I get a new high.
Yes! You're so right about simply being in a space that we find visually beautiful is why we like to shop. Thanks for sharing your experience Sharrell!
I keep a pretty box (picked it up at a yard sale) with scissors, needle/thread, cashmere comb, Tide Pen, shoe horn, shoe polishing sponge/cloth, safety pins, etc....all little tools that make it easy to fix and repair things as I see them....I am very fortunate to have a pretty large, open room as my closet with a window no less so have it set up as a store and it really does make a difference to how I feel about my clothes and dressing....pride of ownership comes with respecting and treating everything you own with dignity, care and kindness....sure does help when it all looks prettily laid out too...Big Hugs....fantastic ideas and suggestions sweetie...
Yes, pride of ownership is so important and i love your mini kit - I need to add a shoe horn and scissors to mine! Thanks so much for watching and sharing xx
Dude your enthousiasm is so infectous.. I really hate having to dress myself everyday (because of my disability) and thinking about it and all the pressure that comes with that, but your videos make me want to put more effort in trying to enjoy it.
ahhhh what a compliment, thank you :) This comment made my heart sing -thanks for sharing, I hope you enjoy shopping your closet! Also, if you have the time and interest, i'd love to take this convo offline - no pressure of course, I just want to make the channel better and I think your feedback could be helpful :) alyssa@msbeltempo.com
I love all of your ideas and will be incorporating them! Two more ideas: 1. keep a little scissors to cut tags off so you're not temped to pull and maybe damage an item. (mine is an old eyebrow trimmer that lost its sharpness) 2. i use the rainbow color order (ROYGBIV) to organize my colors starting with black on the left in the winter and white on the left in the summer. It's pleasing to the eye! Nothing like mother nature to guide us!
Great tips! Another one is to have good lightning inside the closet to actually see the clothes! I had to install a wireless led light in mine, it was too dark.
Thank you , I was feeling kinda guilty that I’m a maximalists when it comes to my clothing . I have purchased mostly second hand over many years , and have a lot . I recently have put extra pieces that I’m not quite sure if I’m going to keep in my spare room where my sewing machine is . I’m planning to go through each piece and ask myself what I can I do so I will wear it . Rather than keep buying I wanted to go shopping in my extra space . I seam to always gravitate to the same things . I’m from California and a 60’s child so I do like boho style for my every day and gardening . But for other life events I’m classic . Very different styles . The fabrics are mostly natural and very expensive to buy . So I’m hoping to reconstruct some items for fun . When I was young I would make clothes out of flour sacks or hand me downs . I enjoy the creative process . I recently just put a rack near my bed and put my favorite fall items and have been playing around with my clothes . I don’t feel crazy for doing that now , thanks for the validation . I really needed to hear this .
Hi Chanel! Don't ever feel guilty for your style/wardrobe/how you dress ... any action and awareness is better than perfection paralysis and it sounds like you've got mad sewing skills (which is so important for a conscious closet, i'm jealous!) and some great secondhand finds :) Your ideas sound like fun, enjoy your sewing projects!
I love my closet because I have used all the things you suggest for years. I often light a candle that has a scent I love and enjoy it while putting on makeup and getting dressed. I look forward to putting an outfit together. I also use my extra clothes rack to plan outfits but also if I bring something new into my wardrobe, I leave it on that rack and don't take the tags off until I am certain I love it and can wear it a variety of ways. Excellent suggestions!
Alyssa, these are great ideas! I worked in retail and find myself color-coding my closet - LOL. I like the tip about making your closet feel like a boutique with a rug, candles, and/or flowers. Definitely going to do that...thanks!
Isn't it true once you've worked retail you do this automatically? Also tops by sleeve length! And I compulsively "face" dollar bills in my wallet as the dept manager taught me.
Alyssa, you have single-handedly inspired me to do something about my closet and wardrobe. I'm cultivating a sort of capsule wardrobe and I'm giving good thought to everything I buy. Quality of quantity is key and I'm finally understanding that. I absolutely LOVE shopping my own closet...I realized I've got very little to wear and now I can focus on what I need for my go-to outfits so I'll never stand in my closet, lost and frustrated, ever again. Thank you!
To gather all stylist’s kit together is a fantastic idea.I love that gold colour lint roller holder ( ?vase). I religiously use lint rollers because we have a dog and I hate to have hair on my clothes.
One of the first rooms my hubby renovated was our walk-in closet (yup, he's a keeper), and I have a similar set up to you with the double rods, but then as I do wear dresses quite a bit I have a single rod on the other side. Between the two, right in the middle is a dresser with a rod and valet hook above where I hang clothes currently on rotation. Ironically, I have the biggest closet of my life with the smallest wardrobe I've ever had as I've converted to a capsule wardrobe where the items are either thrifted or sustainably and ethically produced. Love your videos, Helena
I also use deviders for my underwear ( have separate for white/nude and black) and socks. I'm going to do the same with my husband's wardrobe. Very good and useful hints, Alyssa. Your enthusiasm, joy and personal vibe are so great that they make watching your videos a pure pleasure. You too have a wonderful week ahead 🙂🙏
I use my hanging rack differently. I keep it where I do my laundry. I hang up the clothes there but do not bring them to my closet for 1-2 weeks. I then dress from what is in my closet. This helps me rotate and wear all of my clothes. If a piece remains in the closet after a few rotations, then I know that it is no longer practical for me and it gets donated.
Great suggestions! I love all your organization suggestions, I've re-purposed some "hat boxes" for all the fabric care tools (per one of your previous vids!). When hubby and I redesigned the closet (we actually gave up space to make a larger master bath!) I knew I wanted a pretty space. We call it my Tiffany closet...he color matched a Tiffany blue box, and we placed the power outlet at elbow level for easy access, with a shiny silver cover of course! We made sure the floor was less likely to be cold so we used cork flooring. I highly recommend getting some pro tips for installation; one of our seams has curled up just a smidge. Oh and I can't forget my hanging crystals drum light! It's a little over the top, but it's fun!
Good morning from South Dakota! I just watched your video re. putting an outfit together...and now a new video! Blessings to you this Sunday morning, Alyssa! from Nancy, in bed, with coffee and my dog
You are adorable. Absolutely loved you video. Made me realized that a more store like style closet will make me appreciate the things that I already have. Great tips!
Absolutely, just did this to my closet. Wish I could show you a picture. I purchased pins from the dollar store, tags and re-organized. I also purchase a close rack to make it easier. Dresses for me are a go to because it’s easy. Truth is getting dressed for me is simple I have three color plate, black, white or cream and grey. I also purchased several bins from good will to store sandals in a color coordinated way. Heels are in clear bins. I have a tiny closet, and I don’t have room for a dresser, don’t much care for them anyway. I am in search of a good steamer, and recommendations. Always love your videos 💕
I have a really small closet in a flat which has absolutely no space for extra wardrobes or armoires or clothing racks anywhere, so even though I don't have a lot of clothes, there is no way to avoid everything being very, very tightly packed. I still immensely enjoyed watching your video. A girl can dream :-).
Excellent ideas. I am still struggling with cutting down items in my over stuffed closet. It is very hard for me to give up clothes they become so personal to me. This is very inspirational
I love this video because it speaks to how to love what we already own. My favourite part of my closet is the colour coordination. I get so much pleasure every day from looking at my closet and seeing the beautiful shades and textures of my sweaters. Right now I am savouring the pinks and purples and how they create a soft palate beside the teals and greens. Oh my, what a feast for the eyes and such loveliness to wake up to and start my day with. Thanks for reminding me what I love about my closet and the clothes I have.
I have GOT to figure out how to incorporate that rack idea. I also really loved the drawer full of clothing care items, makes perfect sense to have that stuff close at hand (i keep stuff like that in the laundry room or my sewing room, both of which are far from my closet). I'll definitely be thinking about some changes thanks to this video! Thank you as always for sharing your ideas!
Great ideas, especially as I'm in the process of organizing and purging my vast wardrobe to prepare to move to a new state/home with my amazing husband and Beagley boys, while staging our home to sell! 😊❤🏠🐶❤🐶❤
Love your closet. I used to store out of season shoes in their boxes, but all the different colored shoe boxes distracted from my boutiquey walk-in closet so I swapped them out for clear containers from the dollar store. Now I can find them easily and my shoe selves look so much better. I like your little girly displays. I’m going to do more of that. Thanks!
Hi, Alyssa! Great tips, as always. Thank you for the knitwear tip - incorporating it today! 👍 I have a small walk in closet that I share with my husband, but it's the light that makes all the difference. I love walking in there and seeing everything clearly, and the small space emphasizes the importance of editing! So, keeping it clean, up-to-date (one season at a time), bright, and well organized makes it very inviting and welcoming, and makes me feel happy and relaxed to be in the space with my clothes. Have a great week! N 🥰🎈
This is the best closet advice I have ever heard 😮🤯 thank you so much! It was super helpful to see the visuals, too! I need to do every single one of these! I *love* the idea of displaying the clothes you pick out for the day/week on a separate rack or hook on the wall. I’ve been doing this by picking out 4-5 tops that I want to wear and placing them in the front, with any accessories (scarves, belt) or other hanging items (a skirt) and having them foremost in my closet.
Always so pleased if you upload before I go to bed on a Sunday! Great video and great tips. Never a truer word than when you said you will never find anything if you have to part the Red Sea. Absolutely my problem and one which I am trying to address at the moment.
Thankyou Alyssa for another wonder vid! and great advice. Spent Saturday sorting my clothes, took nearly the whole day but so happy I did. Great pieces at the back of your wardrobe get forgotten and I had gotten in bad habits with my morning routine deciding what to wear and running late!
Such great thoughtful tips! Thank you for sharing. Sounds like you made this video just in time to help a lot of viewers! I have a tiny but well organized closet and I've used a lot of these ideas. Especially like having a step stool tucked inside because vertical space is a tiny closet's friend only if you can access it! See you next Sunday, Alyssa, have a beautiful week.
I added a lantern filled with twinkle lights, fragrance and lotion, books for the purse I'm using"now", cubicle shelves on top shelf to display my prettiest shoes and handbags, a favorite postcard and quote which reads: "fitting in is for school girls. Being different is not a crime- but an asset" unknown. Thanks for the inspiration!
Yes!! Great advice! I have been wanting to paint my closet and add a new light fixture. Feeling motivated now! Oh I should also finish organizing. Great tip on sweaters. I have wire baskets I use, so I can see inside. Love that you’re sustainability focused!
I hang my sweaters so I can see them but I use the thicker wooden hangers. Love all these ideas! Especially love the idea of a rug in the walk in closet. Thanks so much!
So many great tips! I love having my closet organized by color with tops, pants, and dresses in separate sections. I can see what I own in a quick glance. I also use a clothing app for outfit ideas; it also tells me what I wear the most and the least.
Thanks Alyssa. Another great video. I agree with your clothing rack idea - it’s a real timesaver. I also recommend saving the beauty gift boxes from presents and using them in your drawers to separate clothing & the Ikea Variera Pot Lid Organiser to flexibly store handbags.
@@AlyssaBeltempo. Thanks. Another tip would be to repurpose a bookcase to store shoes. You can easily see them in the morning and see which of them needs repairing, replacing or needs to be seasonally stored.
A few years ago I started replacing my hangers with nice quality wooden hangers! The clothing hang so much better and they are a classic timeless extra that fits my style💚
Great video Alyssa! I’m from NY and have so little space in my closet, but I do have an extra clothes rack. I disassembled it because it was taking up too much space, and became a place to throw my clothes on when I was too lazy to hang them up. I think I’ll try again. Love what you did with your lint remover!💕 I hate to leave mine out because I don’t like the way it looks. This is a great solution.☺️
great ideas for the upcoming move. my current closet is huge but it is a deep, wide and short, under the eaves of an attic, so the amount of visual organization possible is minimal. new closet will allow more options! really liking the 'rack of stuff i will wear this week' idea, because I need to make videos for my work.
I love clear containers too. I save the clear bags that blankets come in . You pick up and see everything. Step stools are handy. Kids use them for tiny chairs.
I was able to take over a spare bedroom & convert it to a combined closet/home office. The half that is the closet, the actual closet that was built into the room is where I put in a closet system & store my fall/winter sweaters, sweatshirts, longer cardigans & year-round coats & jackets (also blazers) & other winter items. For the other half, I have a second closet system, the same as the first, this is my spring, summer, pants/jeans/shorts, dresses & shoes. Also a wider bookcase for my jewelry & purses & other items. We go on a vacation each year so as the vacation gets closer, I bring up a garment rack & start pulling items to decide what I'll be taking with, kind of like 'geranimals for grown-ups' because I play with the rack until nearly everything can be mixed & matched to get the most outfits out of the fewest items.
I need a small rack like that!! Honestly, I do have clothes and shoes and I don't even remember that I have them. I'm retired and at home & I mean at home a lot..lol..but I really need to do better. Great tips 💗
I really need to organise my cupboards into sections. I keep meaning to do it and just don't get round to it. It would make my life so much easier. I am making a conscious effort to wear more of my clothes and not buy anything else. I will definitely get organised eventually thanks to your suggestions and tips.
Thank you for another helpful video. I am in the middle of decluttering my closet. Uniform hangers check! Have decided to do it by sections. Less overwhelming. Accessibility is key. You are right. Still quite a ways to go. Here in LA, fall means not wearing shorts on some days when the temperature dips to the low 60s Fahrenheit. People are saying: “it’s freezing!!” Bonne semaine Alyssa! Bisous!
Hi Jeannette! I giggled when I ready your comment about how people are saying its cold at 60 degrees. We have snow here today so winter has officially started! So glad you liked the video - wishing you a successful closet declutter! :) bisous! xx
Thanks for another great video, Alyssa! I *love* the topic of closet organization. I love your idea of having a featured section or OOTD hook, I am going to make that happen. The way I do hangers is a bit different. I have some plastic ones I’ve had since before the concern for sustainability came along and use them for things like sturdy shirts. If I get a hanger with a purchase (usually a coat or dress that it’s best not to shove in a bag) I put the aesthetics aside and use it with the most appropriate garment. I use wood ones for jackets and cardigans, wide-shoulder ones for bulky items that want to slide (same for the ones with silicone on top) and indented ones for tanks and other gauzy things. I even have a few handed-down padded satin ones for delicate items. It makes me feel better about making sure the hangers get used and are not sent to the landfill, and my clothes are well cared for. BTW, your blouse is lovely!
I couldn’t believe this video! I just joined your channel and was going through your list of previous videos. I am working on my closet so I can see everything. My closet is not a bad size but it’s mostly behind walls and I share it. I really appreciated the tips. I am really enjoying your station.
This is brilliant, probably one of my favorite video's. I've been wanting to get a small rail for my room for 'this weeks clothes' but couldn't convince myself as to why. You've just inspired me. I love the idea of see through boxes too, unfortunately mine are not (but they are folded MK style) If I ever replace them I'll do this.
I already do a lot of these things in my own closet and live it. One of the other things I keep on hand is tiny thread scissors. To cut off tags or tiny threads.
haha thank you for pointing this out! I spell checked it beforehand and wrote it incorrectly anyway lol I blame my formative years as an airforce military brat!
Watching this Vlock I follow your promp advise of separating what to wear in your next week. I alse startet with my separate closet of garments that I will wear this coming week. Not only empty my closet, but I have a better viem of my garments. While a put a separate closet next to my bathroom. And also put drawers for my clean panties, socks all fix to plan your today's wardrobe, thanks for your smart advise
Alyssa, I was so inspired by this video that I finally reorganized my clothes closet so that now all my fall/winter and spring/summer clothes are together arranged by category, color, and solid vs. print. Thank you.
Alyssa Beltempo no show is what you got and why it works for you and the detailed that help you.If you get a new bag you have any history to teachers about
Good morning Alyssa ☕️ ! I am surprised about the things I organize in a similar way as you, so I am on the correct path to make it work one day. Inspired in you little rack, 10 days ago I did one my self out of industrial pipe 😊 Have a nice day and a great week, see you next Sunday.
Oh, so this is why I am constantly shopping...lack of closet organization...the struggle is real. Well done, seriously. If you can’t find it, you can’t wear it.
I cannot stand a jammed pack rack so I too box what I'm not wearing this season. I downsized our book collection so I use the shelves for sweaters and shoes. They are perfect!
That step ladder trick is brilliant! I’m short. They have foldable really cute ones at Canadian Tire. Going thrifting next week and dragging my sister along. I googled all the thrifting stores in Newmarket Ontario and they have some surprisingly good ones. This video is the bomb. Thank you so much! Love the rattan jewelry holder. I want one...lol ☮️💕
Alyssa you provide to me the Idea of dividing my Bras, intimate and hosiery apparel in my drawer...then later they jump in between my other desk drawers...that's frustrating. Anyway I'm taking my long sleeve shirts....fall is coming in no time, so also have to take out some old wearers out of the drawers...Great Idea, you provide to me knowledge..."taraaa!" Greetings from Tijuana, Mexico
Chow Alyssa, some great tips there, it’s 9am here in Australia and I still haven’t gotten out of my pjs Lol 😂 #wheneveryoudecidetogetdressed......Why, because I’m watching You Lol 😂...Much Love from Queensland Australia 🇦🇺😎😎🤗🤗
Thanks for this video! It comes at a perfect time for me feeling Blaise about my wardrobe. I also downloaded the Cladwell App again! This application helps me not feel overwhelmed rather content with a current wardrobe. Keep up the excellent content! C
