Organizing Disaster of a Barn Mess! 

Cap’n, I clandestinely watched this video… I could have waited… I could have worn my ear buds… but, I was too excited to see what you were doing and saying…. And alas, I got caught. About, the time you mentioned finding a place for your welding gear… a voice comes from over my shoulder and says, “You need to do that to your shop!” So, I paused and said, “Yes dear.” All the stealth watching, pausing the video when she walked by to get her second cup of coffee and muffled audio… WAS FOR NAUGHT! Cap’n you were totally successful in motivating Nana to remind me that I needed to clean my shop. In fact she tried to wait until the end to discuss it further…. But then, she saw you pull the 755 into the open space. That pushed her over the edge… it became the INSPIRATIONAL moment that opened the flood gates. No, it didn’t bring her to tears. But, it did totally change her attitude. Her face lit up with a smile of satisfaction as she said, “See? He made enough room to put his entire tractor in his shop! You could do the same for your pickup. If, you wanted to!” Cap’n, I type this through tear stained cheeks. Thanks for brightening her day. The hope you planted in her heart is so gratifying. I am so happy that you made her morning bright. As for me, I too am inspired. I’m going to wipe the tears from my eyes, grab that second cup of coffee and head right out to the shop! You see it has been a while since I surveyed the clean-up opportunity that is strewn about. I have resolved that by the end of the day, I will have completed a new survey! And, my new mission is to come up with a plan for how to move this urgent project back onto the ‘Long Term’ list… where it belongs! Thanx for the inspiration bud!!!

The key to keeping your garage in order is to always put things back where they belong after you use them. Take that advice from someone who never did that in his own garage. It always looks nice when you clean it, but never lasts.

From now on remember the old saying" a job isn't finished until the tools are put away and the site cleaned up"

This video is so near and dear to my heart! Absolutely love it and smiled the entire time! You might not believe this, but I have a bucket of trampoline springs I just couldn’t throw away either! Great work and now you caught the organization bug! It makes life so much easier and makes you smile when you look at it!!!

cut an oversize opening for welder exhaust - make up a double wall 'pipe' so fumes go out the inner pipe and an air space to shield the heat away from your siding, You also need to put a safety chain on your propane tank to hold up vertical - same swing chain you want for your standup timber.

The chainsaw bench looks great, almost firemen proof. That reorganization turned out great!!!!

I loved this. Watching shop/barn organization is one of my favorite things. I let my shop get to be quiet the train wreck sometimes as well and usually spend the better part of a day re organizing it

Fun watching your videos when a plan works out for you because your look of joy of accomplishing something is so transparent.

You can see where you have been during this reorganisation, everything has it place near enough!!! For the exhaust through the wall, fabricobble a twin wall pipe, hot exhaust in the inside pipe and the outside pipe will act as a natural heat barrier similar to a condenser boiler, you could use the outside pipe to provide air to help cool the motor down perhaps....... Doing the job in three half days was a good idea, gave you some thinking time on how to move forward with the shelving etc. How much strawberry jam did you eat ?? Nowt like home made Captain !!!

Your creativity in your "build as you go" projects is amazing!

Take a old saw blade and cut into 4 pieces. Stand two pieces up next to each other with the teeth facing the same direction. Add support in the middle to the width of the smallest wrench you have and on the back plate drill a hole. It will hold all you wrenches in order and if you want to move it it's only a screw.

You are amazing you see in your mind what you want and you go for it if you can't buy it you build it thank you for putting a smile on my face this morning and some giggles too

Things I have learned over time: FIFO (First In First Out) is the best way to keep stock rotated; LIFO (Last In First Out) is what you do when you just pile things up and use the first one you can reach; FIST (First In Still There) is what happens when you use LIFO too long. 😎

Very nice job, Captain. Anything worth building is worth over-building. And in a pinch, you could probably park a car on your chainsaw bench! Almost motivated enough to go organize my stuff, before the temperature hits 100 this afternoon, well, almost. Or I could sit in the A/C and watch videos on RU-vid. Decisions, decisions.😁

I like the tire around the wood when you were splitting them (Great idea), saves getting hit by flying wood cuts when chopping! Also, I was thinking you should build a metal storage shelf on the back side of the barn, so you can keep your stuff off the ground and cut the weeds down versus sitting on those pipes. When you were building the saw shelf, I was wondering how you would get the tracker to the the pallets off the back shelf, you built in the previous videos. Wow, the tracker still fits! Idea for the Vent: Get a powered vent to suck the fumes out of the barn (Use can use one of the plugs on the Welder for power, plus, no need for a power switch either). When you turn it off, the vent turns off. I figured that it would be better option than just a standard vent. Bonus: Powered Roof vents to remove the heat during the summer time, while working.

I do this about every other week to my shop too, stuff just always gets piled up i dont understand how it happens lol. as far as the exhaust just drill a hole and put a metal sleeve through the penetration, maybe an old piece of car exhaust pipe then run the exhaust from the welder through that outside and it will keep from burning up your metal siding

On the bright side, whenever my shop gets cluttered and I finally clean it up, almost every time I find a tool or something that I had forgotten about. On the flip side, it's usually something I forgot I had and went and bought another one, so there's that I guess. But in the end, as you said, I stand back and think about it and realize how blessed I am to even have a shop to lose stuff in.

Mike, wanna get that tiller running. Go to Mustie1's channel. He has vids of getting them running. Most likely it's a really easy fix. Most likely a carb problem that is easy to fix. Especially if you left gas in the tank. Then it's a gas turned varnish that gunked up the carb problem. First easy thing to do is take of the carb bowl and clean it. Then the float and clean the needle and the passage with brake cleaner. Reassemble and give it a try starting it. Especially for me as I attended a vocational school for small engines my junior and senior years of high.

Excellent clean up plan, Mike. Looking great!👌 Three suggestions for you. 1. The welder/generator exhaust. You can get propane appliance exhaust pipes from most local hardware stores that are already made, just measure the diameter and lengths you need and fit the pieces together. There are straights, elbows, and caps, so you can basically fit most situations. 2. It would be wise to store the propane outside for full ventilation. As you know propane pools in low spaces, so when you do move indoors, having that safety space is something to consider. 3. Solar panels. I actually live off grid and all of my every day needs are handled by solar and a bank of 6 volt golf cart batteries wired in 12 volt series (they seem to last the longest and hold the best charge for the money) with off the shelf power inverters, a 400 watt most of the time for charging all my devices (phones, tablets, ect) and small appliances like hair trimmers, coffee grinder and things like that , a 1,500 watt not very much, and a 2,000 watt for a quick hot pot of water and running a sewing machine for upholstery, fabric repairs, making motorcycle accessories, and other miscellaneous things. I paid $55 per battery 10 years ago, still going strong. Today those batteries are $95 each. For your shop a 2,000 watt inverter during the day would be more than enough to charge your tool batteries and maybe a couple LED lights to work with. Of course the size of your system will determine the capabilities and the equipment you choose will determine the efficiency and effectiveness, as well as cost. I am just me, so I only use my generator for laundry, charging the batteries on cloudy days and running higher amp appliances like vacuum, compressor, worm drive skill saw, arc welder, and other farm equipment. I don't use a fridge or freezer because it's cheaper to get what I need each day. My solar panel is a 24in x 24in 27 volt panel with a voltage regulator to prevent overcharging and 4 batteries, a very basic system that handles everything I need. If I had to replace the system at today's cost it would be about $1,000 all in. I have installed a few basic systems with 4x8 panels, off the shelf inverter, and 10-16 batteries for between $2,500 and $3,000, but no fancy charge controllers or any of that. I'm not a solar pro, just a guy helping some friends out and a couple of neighbors. Solar works fantastic on really sunny, larger battery bank systems, with lower amp usages. OK, for whole house, fridge, freezer, family, but you will absolutely need either a generator or supplemental service power because it just can't keep up, even with a $60,000 system. From a guy on an extremely tight budget to a guy careful budget minded with a family, hopefully these are useful tips for you.🤙

I sure wish I had my junk back as it gave me pleasure just to use it when I had a minute to play. I see having no shame as tell me who doesn't have a drawer in their home or garage that is full of everything from zip ties to wire clips an stuff to fix a faucet plus "I just know this is something I can use later and now that drawer is so full that it barely shoves shut, and nothing is in eye sight to use if you need it plus its plumb forgotten anyhow. It's called life, and the reason there's a thing called spring cleaning. It didn't look all that bad for as busy and all the projects you have cooking. . Not much more to say stay safe.

The secret of keeping everything in order is to put away the tools before quitting for the day. Suggestion on the power unit would be a vent from a cloths dryer. Job well done Mike.

Mike, you might hate me for this, seeing as how you just filled that wall with a bench, but have you ever considered just taking all the metal off of that wall and just moving it on over to the outside of the porch area? Might need to build a new porch or new porch roof but more inside workspace. also, I have a friend who took one of the drive sprocket rings from a bulldozer and an old tractor trailer wheel rim, welded them together then welded a piece of 6x6 square tubing on top of the rim. on top of the short 6x6 he welded a plate to hold his vise. we worked out in the yard on big stuff all the time with that thing and it was heavy enough to hold some big things in it while blacksmithing and metal working. It was an old Reed or Parker vise.

I can SO IDENTIFY with this video! I've been on a month long campaign to clean up and sort out so I can figure out what I've done and need to do and where everything is...... just been too long jumping from one thing to the next without cleaning up the partial things I've started and been distracted from for something else!!

There is no better feeling than being organized. The barn looks great. Some slide out shelves for hand tools and such could be a nice addition. Stay safe

I like the tire idea, and wish that I had thought of it years ago when I was doing a lot of wood splitting.

Captain, on way to not have to weed eater around those tractor emplaments is put down some black plastic landscaping ground cover under that plastic pipe extended out 1 or 2 feet beyond the longest item you'll have on it. My best childhood friend had a 5 acre farm out in the Miami-Dade Redlands area and he did that to save him the headache of having to move his equipment and clear out undergrowth. He put gravel around the edges to keep in down and to keep scorpions and snakes from living under it. Worked like a charm. Captain, you can get drawer kits fairly reasonably priced online and thru Home Depot and Lowes. Love that bench. Old metal bed frames are good for shelves frames. I'm making one for our kitchen closet with it and formica cover bed sides cut to length for the shelves. I'm even using the heavy plastic frame wheels so it can be rolled around.

Good work cleaning up your "collection" That should last at least a year.😁 About the Generator/welder, plumbing the exhaust to the outside via a dryer vent with 1 way flapper would be handy. also, install an exterior electrical outlet with a power cable inside to plug into the generator (Saves running a cord out through the door ) I am guessing someday you world be wanting to move the generator.

I imagine you feel much better seeing everything organized so it will be easier to find things you need.

Great chain saw station, now all you have to figure out how to fit it on the tailgate of the truck or side by side where you actually work on the saws.

Mike that workbench is a beast. If I were you I think i would store the implements along the side of the barn, parallel vs perpendicular pipes, to reduce the visual impact. As far as the welder exhaust you should be able to figure out the size of the pipe and buy a muffler extension to run it out through the wall, just remember once you punch a hole in the wall its kind of a permanent fixture.

HeyCap coat the bench and hangers with stain or polyurethane to keep it looking good this is why I said those trees you took down cut up for whatever lumber you can get you too down other they make a portable sawmill 🤔

Only thing I would mention Mike is when using that roll away extension cord is fully unwind it before use, as it will generate heat with use. I'm sure as a fireman you know this just commenting for all your viewers that may not, great job on organizing the shed.

I use tape to write on for my cat containers in case I have to change it out for a larger bucket. Luv those things.

Great video, simply makes a fellow feel better to get clean and organized! But watching it makes me feel like I need a nap. On your welder, holesaw a hole then pipe it outside use a tee and go vertical use the ground to support the bottom and run it up about 8 feet with a flapper to keep water and critters out, band clamp it on the welder so you can pull it out if needed. I would put it on a skid with the propane bottle so you can fork it outside if you need, maybe casters to make it movable in the shop.

I believe if I was going to run the exhaust outside I would try to keep it simple but safe I would come off your current exhaust with a short stainless flexible connector to help with vibration then go to a muffler shop and have them bend a 90 degree on it long enough to be past the eve about a foot put a flapper on top and one mount under the eve . A 10ft joint of aluminized steel pipe is fairly inexpensive

Not knowing how the exhaust on that welder/generator is setup the only thing I can think of to exhaust outside would be a dryer vent with some of the flexible metal piping. I did that in my old garage for when I was tuning cars. It allowed direct ventilation outside but also kept critters from coming in and it even worked in the rain!

Keeping organized increases productivity, sometimes you need to step back and get right. Good job!

I see potential for expansion. Double the size? I would triple the size. Concrete pad with overhang for the attachments as well as outdoor cutting and welding area. And of course, electrical outlets and lights for the building (inside & out). And let's not forget fire extinguishers. I would have at least two inside and two outside.

Captain, I would volunteer to drive your way from Cincinnati to help you but knowing what I suspect, there is no way I'd be comfortable knowing harmless non venomous snakes are creeping around that property. It's the element of "surprise" I'm wouldn't be prepared for!

I love it. I never made a permanent spot for it, I'm going to take care of that real fast. We all know there's never a permanent spot for anything LOL, make it work, and will adjust for it later.
