If you're curious about how the same studio looked nearly a decade ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ChqxhzFjgx8.htmlsi=Yj7D-oByQisk01-d :)

Thanks and Happy New Year to you as well, dear Terri! I'm still kicking myself for not buying more of those pots when I had the chance. They're so pretty...

Hi, Laura! This has been a really refreshing clean-repurpose-and-re-organise video! So often, these videos are all about Ikea and their drawers, boxes, organisers, etc, and I wonder what happened to imagination, reusing things we already have, or re-purposing things meant for other usage. And here is Laura, busy doing exactly that, and making it look just as neat and tidy, and far more interesting. We don't all have Ikea budgets - I certainly don't! - and looking around my studio (doubles as my dining room, rather than the other way round 😄), I think at least half is re-purposed. For example, I keep looking at the box containing my felt tip, markers, glues, and often look at possible alternatives but in the end, that cardboard box transformed with white gaffer tape is still there. My 'Ikea' cube-storage is actually stacked strong cardboard boxes from the hardware store. There are lots of A4 drawers for card, paper and small oddments, but these were bought over time, as my craft equipment demanded, so there are three of one type, and six of another... My chest-of-drawers for art papers was hand-made to my spec by a small local business. It has a huge advantage over Ikea-type drawers, as it's solid wood, has a back on it, and the drawers have knobs, not cut-outs, which ensures that my art papers are kept dry, in the dark, dust, damp and insect free. My wooden brush box and folding table were made my my neighbour (again, to my own spec). None of these cost furniture-shop shop prices and all are aesthetically pleasing to look at, even though they don't match (I love real wood - I mentioned it when you did the video where they were selling those lovely turned wooden bowls). I looked at Ikea solutions when I moved here and lost my big built-in cupboard, but in the end, Brexit's impact on my income stopped me. And I am _sooooo_ thankful!!!!! (I think that's the only good thing which has come out of Brexit for me!!!) I rearranged what I have and realised that this room would just not be 'me' if it was all stored tucked away in soul-less, personality-less Ikea white.... So to end as I began, many, many thanks for a real-life down to earth clean- repurpose-and-re-organise video. But just one question: Please can you tell me how you deal with the sharp edge of the cans? Our European can openers leave a very sharp lip, which makes re-using them impossible (or at least, I haven't found a solution yet!). 😊

Not at all! :) Your chest of drawers sounds awesome. Real wood is the bestest! I hope to improve the aesthetic of my organizing one day, but just can't justify spending money on fancy organizing systems when I'd rather be putting it towards new art supplies. As to the re-purposed cans, I use this safety opener by Pakitner: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Oz1GncPr_Fk.html It's a real game changer. Warmest wishes from Cold Colorado, L.

@@LauraGYoung Hi again, Laura! Many thanks. I've taken a look at the opener and the Amazon France equivalent, and it looks good - not as expensive as I'd feared. I've put it in my Amazon basket for now, and will think about it, but given how often I cut my fingers on the lids / lips of the cans. it is highly probable that I will buy it! Yes, wood is lovely to have! I was pushed into getting it made because I couldn't find one in the shops that was deep enough for half-Imperial paper or A3 paper placed horizontally in the drawer. It cost me far less than the flat-pack versions (with no back and not deep enough!) and it is beautifully made, stained and lacquered! I went back and ordered two bookcases with the top shelves having 'walls' around them (as if they should have another shelf on the top) as I got fed up with things falling / sliding off a top shelf, or it ending up as 'dead' space. Also, to get the right height for the shelves - art books tending to be bigger, and for the length to fit the room. One is 2 metres (roughly 6 feet) long, the other sits on the top of the drawers to just under half the depth of the drawers. I bought them from money I earned by teaching a 20 week art course (two terms of 10 weeks) at home, as I wasn't able to do do a regular job by this time, and disability payments were needed for essentials!!! Like you, any spare cash tends to go on replacing art supplies these days, but 'spare cash' is a rare thing for so many of us in the current economic climate, so I'm glad that just before I moved here from the UK, I had done a big restock! 😄

@@MrsBarnabas -- I would love to have an antique map cabinet to store my larger paintings in. (In my Uni days, I worked in the State library's government docs section, and would process/file maps on the regular.) Right now I'm making due by putting things into large flat portfolios. Your cabinet sounds like an elegant solution! As to safety can openers, my husband said to share this quirky video he came across that talks allllll about them: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i_mLxyIXpSY.htmlsi=c41V51v8SG1Dr2A3 . :)

It's great to see you enjoying writing as another creative outlet - 332 pages! I love the re-use and the thought you've put into making your setup look great and also functional. Thanks for sharing what happens behind the scenes with your creative practice, it's very helpful to see and reflect on! Skeeter made quick work of that cardboard box 😊

Thanks so much, John! 😊In the wild, Skeeter would be a cavity nester, so he really enjoys hiding in boxes and chewing things up. www.tanzaniabirds.net/African_birds/parrot_African_orange_bellied/parrot_African_orange-bellied_Tar_LindaBushman_2016-11[2].jpg
