It has recently come to my attention after listening to “Fleeing Kuro” (the Mount Horu escape sequence piece) again, that it does contain the leitmotif. It was just different enough in key and melody that I didn’t notice it the first time. Timestamp in that song is 0:22-1:20 and 2:24-3:22. If anyone is interested in some analysis, the placement and tone of the theme in that piece is very different to the others. Every other piece features Ori’s theme in the second half, and in tonal contrast to the previously established “panic themes,” as I call them (basically just the “oh no, something is chasing/fighting me” section of the piece). The entrance of Ori’s theme to the piece feels like a symbolic switch from panic to determination. However, in the Mount Horu escape, Ori’s theme itself seems warped into the panic theme, and together they make up the majority of the piece. I’d say symbolically that this is meant to represent Ori’s struggle to achieve that same determination they’ve shown in the past to stand against Kuro, given their understanding and sympathy towards her circumstances.
I personally believe that Indie games use leifmotivs much better than big companies, not only Ori but ULTRAKILL is a great example of this aswell but man, the Ori leifmotiv is so beautiful in my opinion
@krepy2540 technically yes, it is created by moon studios under Microsoft, but then again moon studios has a grand total of 3 games, the ori series, and no rest for the wicked, the only thing that makes moon studios not a indie dev, is the funding from Microsoft, otherwise they still are very unrecognized by the public.
Oh yeah Ori’s theme is in many places! It tends to show up in the majority of plot-important moments. I was specifically focusing on the chase/boss battle versions in this video because they follow a consistent pattern that I thought was pretty interesting.
The first two pieces in the compilation are from Blind Forest! “Restoring the Light, Facing the Dark” plays during the Ginso Tree escape sequence, and “Escaping the Ruins” plays during the Windtorn Ruins escape sequence!
