honestly its nice to see something different, the divers start to look all the same or very similar after awhile. the world timer is at least a different look and something outside of the box IMO
Honestly, the world timer is 100x more interesting. The diver is yet another Sub clone with an oyster bracelet. The World Timer is more daring and unique. If that bezel was outside the watch and a dive time bezel, Id go for it in a heart beat!
I actually like the unorthodox design of the World Timer. The way it, they've got a little bit of something for everyone. If you want a good looking, conventional design, go for the kamasu. If you want something more unique, go for the world timer.
I really appreciate your honesty, Marc! There are not many authorized dealers out there who are bold enough to state their true opinions on the watches they sell. That is truly remarkable on your part and you just made a lifetime customer out of me.
I bought my first Orient just a few weeks ago. It's a Defender 2. It really is very good for the money. Well put together, hands all line up perfectly and it's keeping time to within 5 seconds a day. The bracelet is the only let down as its a bit thin and flimsy but having said that very comfortable. Really can't argue with the value.
I sure with Orient would increase the crown size on their dive watches. This looks like it is just as small as on the Ray2/ Mako2/USA2/Kakadu. I still love those watches but the crowns are not easy to manipulate.
It is just like the other Kamasus. Yeah, it is the biggest flaw of this watch for me. But that wouldn't stop me from getting it, it is an awesome watch still. One of the best in terms of what you get for your money. But the small and flimsy crown and the noisy ass rotor can surely be improved.
There are parts of the world (like in Eastern Europe where I live) where we never knew about the existence of Submariner design or other popular watch designs. These Orient designs (retro diver, sk diver, world timer (24-hour), year calendar) besides Russian designs was all we had seen. So these here look exactly what vintage watches looked and they don’t seem off or weird and they remind us of those time. I don’t know if this kind of design was present in USA in the 70-80’s, if not I wonder why Orient release these re-issues there. The prices though are out of this world high.
Oh, definitely, I'm from Georgia (the country) and my grandfather had a blue world timer which is unfortunately lost now. Even today I see some old men wearing their green, or brown dial world timers and divers
Love the world timer, Mark. The map is an azimuthal equidistant world map centered on the south pole. The further away from the south pole, the more distorted the map will look. It is very easy to use, but most are used to the standard world map which is a 2-D projection of a 3-D world which is all wrong. What the Orient World time watch lacks is a multi-colored map which is available on the special edition model only. If only Orient could color the map like Omega did on their world timer watch. That would map the dial more readable.
Hello... I do really like the Orient's creations. Well, the majority of it! It is a brand like no other, for the quality they give for these prices and their history as well!. Un saludo Mark!
@@islandwatch very true!, their 'Tri-star' brand overall. An unexpensive family of work-horse watches that has been sold for decades there, from Tijuana till Tierra del Fuego, Mark!.
I love that world timer actually! Dont look at MSRP at orient watches because they are pulling invictas in that regard. But for 200-250 euros that is an amazing watch!
Thank You! I'd seen the World Timer before, had figured it was using the map and the bezel - then thought 'why would you, that's such a kludge' (and the answer is 'because retro'). I want to like it, but I can't for some reason - a lot of the Orients give me that vibe, something about the dial design language - which is bad for me because they are objectively a great package.
You kept calling it the World Timer (and I realize it is one) but Orient refers to it as the "World Map (Revival)" I believe? They have a 3rd version which is a multi colored dial that looks AMAZING!!
The World Timer reminds me of the Ricoh World Timer from the 1970s. Also looked better than it works. But pretty and I love that blue. The green diver is spectacular.
I like the look of the new Kamasu from what I have seen. Off subject but relevant to the brand - anyone know where you can find a sapphire crystal for the Orient Defender 2?
So these new divers, I really like the look of them but I noticed in some pictures the grey toned dial looks really yellowish in bright light areas. Is that just how the camera picks it up or is it really like that? For reference I'm talking about the one they showed in the Epson southeast asia RU-vid video
Im not a fan of it either, the dials look great, but the bezel looks like its made of aluminum (even though its steel) I think a sub style bezel would look killer 😍. The divots on the insert also bother me for some reason...
@@mikerotch6068 I completely agree with everything you've said. I own an Orient USA II that I bought for LIW and just never wear it because of the bezel. I wish they'd fix it. Great watches.
Love the fearless frankness of your vids! A couple of questions: 1. Will you put the older Sun & Moons on sale now that the new one's out? 2. Will you ever sell Orients into the Australian market? I'd buy a ton from you if you did.
The new retro diver looks neat, but I'm kind of glad I picked up a Mako USA 2 before they discontinued it. Also there's something a little sad to me that they replaced all the model names with model numbers.
Señor Mark gracias for your videos, I´ve learned a lot. I´m looking for a Sun and Moon and honestly the lack of the little line under the complication, in my opinion, imbalances de look of the dial. Still searching for a v3 of contemporary in white that keeps all the goodies in the dial!
I agree regarding the "sun & moon" text. I have this watch in v3 and think it's fantastic. I bought it from Marc and also bought a black crocodile strap from him (~ $135). (The deployant is not very comfortable.) The overall look is just amazing. The screws also offer a subtle nod to industrial design.
@@skzion2 Right? I´m waiting for Mr. Mark to maybe get a few of those versions in there so I can buy one from him. ¿Have you tried to dress it down? I suspect i´d look great in brown not-so-formal leather at the very least.
@@sergiobahr5427 In fact, I dressed down my blue sun & moon with a brown Chromexel strap, and it was great. (In fairness, this strap was made in Singapore and cost about $80, so the dress-down was figurative.) I think black is ideal for this watch. Any quality leather would look great. Brown will always work with white, but this watch is inherently a bit dressy, so I like black.
@@skzion2 thanks for your response, and enjoy your watch! I`ll keep on the lookout for a V5 (with the "sun and moon" text included). Here´s hoping I catch one soon, cheers! Edit: did a search to take a look at the strap you mentioned, nice! I´m thinking it would also look great with another watch I´ve my eyes on, the ISL 84.
Divers look great but I expect no less from Orient, I prefer the teal green one. I agree with you on the world timer, it seems silly to not be functional but the dials look great anyway. The...ahem...sun and moon...I like its look but is one that I would really need to see and feel in person.
9:50 xD I agree... For a moment I thought there was a spider web under the "world timer's" crystal. The diver, on the other hand, is really good... Which is no surprise, because it's basically a Kamasu with different indices, and the Kamasu is *awesome* (I truly love mine).
Oh look, Orient came out with the Kamasu II. What changed, the indexes? I love my Kamasu, I don’t understand the marketing strategy though. Thanks, Mark.
I just bought this thinking it was not 12, but 24 hour and unique! Of course, right now the price was discounted so there’s that. The quest for my perfect watch continues…
Dear Marc, Oh, the 1 - 24 are time zones and not a 24 hour format? That's a shame and is going to be hard to use. I wonder if there is such a thing as a 24 watch/clock format, with slow hrs at 24 increments but with the minute hand normal speed? It's so much clearer with the minutes at the normal 60 increments instead of just the ¼ hr marks of a single hand like the MeisterSingers. Who knows? Might be onto something here if one does not exist. I think one can achieve practicality, functionality, with beauty at the same time, without compromise on clarity and accuracy. I look forward to your esteemed thoughts please. Kind regards.
Looks like the vintage diver is just a Kamasu with a different set of hour indices and new dial colors. Everything else seems the same which is kind of a shame since I already have the Kamasu. Still a beautiful watch though. Especially that green dial.
Mark Orient should hire you as a design adviser they could double sales overnight. Good job! BTW have you ever considered making a retro rail road wrist watch with a Montgomery style dial and blued hands?
i may buy the green/blue kamasu. If I do, I’ll buy from Mark since I had a good experience buying the Triton from LongIsland (the one with a power reserve) a few years ago. I’m wondering about the day function…does it cycle through both languages as 12am nears? That seems odd (but also cool).
I actually like the World Timer and am thinking about getting one. It's something different and distinct and not just the thousandth Rolex-copy-diver-style-watch...
Hello Mark. Is possible to get a full end-links instead of the halo ones to the Orient Mako original bracelet ? I`m not interested to buy the full bracelet. Only the full end links. Does it fit to original Orient bracelet ?
I like the divers, especially the grey/black burst dial. Wish they'd kept the markers from the Kamasu though, the round ones make it look a bit more generic imo.
My take on the world timers is that if the map was clearer, it would be more functional. But it is tricky to have a dial that shows a clear map and clean time reading at the same time....
The retro Kamasu models are brill, and the others are attractive, but the worldtimer is *so* niche. My goodness. So much going on. People will either love or hate that one. Now, if only LIW could sell Orient to Australia :-(
So a kamasu with a new dial. More like an updated mako now. I hope they don't discontinue the kamasu as I think it's very much it's own thing with it's own look. This is very nice and commercial but, sunburst aside, a little more generic. Many will prefer that though.
From what I can see the value proposition is out the window, as much as the dials are nice I would've thought as a "retro " style diver they would've at least removed the crown guards giving access to the Crown & made the crown a tad bigger which was the main issue with the kamasu. Still lovely looking watch but I'm struggling to see where the additional $80+ has been designated, I think you're better off grabbing a kamasu while you can as the same issues remain but a better deal. .. I really don't know what to say about the "blue world map 🤔 hmm.
I think the world timer looks fantastic, and given many of the other comments I'm not alone. One person's dislike does not a bad watch make. Hopefully they will sell out soon from your shop which given your obvious dislike you will get the added benefit of not seeing them again 👍
Ray 2 and Kamasu don't have the same case. Identical but not the same. Bracelets aren't interchangeable as well. This one is like a mixture of both models. It is a Kamasu, same case bracelet, sapphire - just different dial, bezel design and the seconds hand lost the red tip (which resemble the Ray, but are not the same)
@@tiagodvt Well i can tell you i have owned 2 ray ll , and 1 kamasu and i cant tell the difference. even the ray 2 bracelet fits perfect like a glove without any space, on the kamasu.
Hey there! The world Timer looks, well interesting 😅 I got another question, I have an Orient, part number RA-AC0K03L10B, do you know where and even if I can get another bracelet for it?
You can already find the world timers half price 🤣 it’s got a beautiful dial though. I would really like to see the open heart diver orient did there’s not a single video on it I can find it might be orient star though so I don’t know if you carry a lot of those
Please try an m force bravo with a Kamasu strap code bracelet I wanna by them for my multiple m force but am scared too with out knowing if it will fit
That's coming from someone who owns a Kamasu and it's very happy with it. My biggest gripe is the cheap bracelet and Spanish days which is completely unnecessary and takes longer for the switch between them...
Vintage style lume just isn't as good as regular. Orient failed to correct the lack of AR coating on sapphire crystal. That was the biggest fault of the Kamasu. The Fresnel equations from physics give reflection and transmission at optical boundaries. Since sapphire has index of refraction of 1.76 as opposed to 1.5 or so for mineral crystal or acrylic, there's a lot more glare and washout. This requires an AR coating to correct. I would much rather buy a cheaper more readable watch with mineral or acrylic crystal than any sapphire watch with no AR.
@@islandwatch At normal incidence, R = ((n2 - n1)/(n2 + n1) )^2 is the reflected power for one surface boundary. For glass: n2=1.5, n1= 1.0 for air, so R=.04. For sapphire n2=1.76, n1=1.0 for air, so R=.076, which is 1.89x the glare of glass. Blue optical coatings of magnesium flouride MgF2 on glass can get that 4% down to 1%. I don't know what coatings are on sapphire. You would want coatings on both surfaces, but on a watch, the outside coating would have durability problems. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresnel_equations
Why couldn't you just align the time on the bezel with your 12:00 to the time zone of choice to their 12:00 for example on your 12: 00 am on your dial you can set the bezel to 800 hours. That way the hour hand will always point at your time and the time of the time zone that you want
What's with the no names thing? "Kamasu" got a lot of play, but it's hard to get excited about the RA-AA08. How are you supposed to talk about it? Or find information about it? Reviewers won't know what to call it either. "That Orient diver. No, not that one, the other one..." I have the watch formerly known as the Sun and Moon. It's a huge chunk of a watch, but it oddly wears well on my 6.5" wrist. That space where "Sun and Moon" used to be now looks kind of blank.
Orient just threw a lot of brand equity into the trashcan by giving up well-known names such as Mako, Ray, and Kamasu. The new serial number identifications are awful and not consumer friendly. What could they possibly have been thinking?
The sad thing is that world timer will be very sought after 50yrs from now. If you have the money and time to wait they may be worthwhile. It reminds me of the 60's & 70's calender watch, that are very collectable. Unfortunately really not cool and calender no longer useful. Doink Doink, I was banking one into the can.🤣 Marc, please forgive me!?! They say "there is a bottom for every seat" and now I say "a wrist for every watch". That trademark is pending...😂🧐🐶
So ,i have a question.Im 18 yo and im thinking about getting the new kamasu in black or the original one in black , which one do you think is proper for my age
I bought one of the Divers on your Black Friday sale for $295,, which was supposed to be the "Black Friday" sale price,, and now they are $295 regular price???? Just goes to show black friday deals really arent deals after all.
I just wished the green was all green. I don't like the black on the bezel. I have too many black bezel/black dial dive watches on my collection and I'd like to add a green one. But that one is too much like a regular black. Unfortunately, there's not many green dive watches around below 300. Just the SRPD Seiko 5 basically, or the Islander 38mm. Citizen isn't full green, the older Kamasu isn't really green as well.
@@islandwatch Thank you for the reply. It sure does look nice, I love the dial! But it looks too much like a regular black dial/black bezel watch. Imo, it is not different enough to justify having it in my collection. If I didn't have so many black dial+bezel watches, maybe. At this point, I just want a really vibrant full green diver.
