The Orient Mako II is a highly popular entry-level dive watch, though you wouldn't know it's entry-level considering the impressive number of features included in this watch. It really gives the iconic Seiko SKX line a run for its money. Watch this video to find out why its popularity is well-deserved and let's see if it can beat out the Seiko SKX.

5 min later, ill complete my payment of this orient, a bit late to the party, but hey, i got it $135 japanese market version. Seiko get more expensive, so after getting this, im going toward swiss watch altogether, but still worried about its repair cost. Collecting exotic straps looks more appealing to me than the watch itself lol

Great value watch, and the black ray 2 looks really nice. But I'm happy I went with my skx013. I've truly grown to love it even without hacking! Any future seiko sarb 033/035 review coming soon?
@mrfuriouser
@mrfuriouser 5 лет назад
I can get along without hacking, it is the lack of the ability to hand-wind which kills the SKX line for me. I just don't like 7s series movements. They have been problematic in my personal experience.
@Jcrossover05
@Jcrossover05 5 лет назад
@@mrfuriouser I tend to wear my skx a lot so it self-winds and I never felt the need to manual-wind for me. It's definitely not a perfect watch mechanics wise, but I've been lucky mine has been a robust everyday watch. Thanks for sharing

Hey JCrossover, I don't have the SARB033 or 035 in the works at the moment, only because they are somewhat similar to the SARB017 that I have already reviewed: www.watchspec.com/seiko-alpinist/ However, these 033/035 are gorgeous watches. Maybe I should try for a review. Thanks, -Jon Rihtar

@@Jcrossover05 you too, brother, good to hear it works well for you. I have a personal proclivity for winding my watches- I just enjoy it. Finding pleasure in the little things as I get older...

Great review and nice comparison Jon, I love Orients, I even have a few, but personally the SKX has a inexplicable quality that attracts me, like a Posrche 356 speedster, sure a Jag E Type of the same era has extra features, but the simplicity if the 356 won me over. Although your points still might drag me over the line, it might take the place holder of a blue diver, until I decide on a Omega SM 300, I find the Omega and Mako similar, and the SKX and Rolex Submariner similar.

Hey Rickstar, You sound like me! But my dream is a vintage 964 (no tail). Maybe one day. Thanks again for the compliments on the review. It means a lot. -Jon Rihtar

Hi Jon, Orient is a really undervalued name, they have been building solid timepieces for quite awhile now, good movements and great bang for your buck, about this specific review I think that the Ray 2 is the best contender for the SKX.
@watchspec
@watchspec 5 лет назад
Hi Danny, I wasn't able to decide between the Ray and the Mako for this review. They're both so impressive, especially at this price point. And the in-house movement with hacking and hand-winding is such a surprise for the price. Thanks again for watching. -Jon Rihtar

I own several Seikos/Orients-Orient Star. Mako 2 overall is a watch which will challenge its counterparts in watchmaking industry, except for the bracelet, i got a 22mm silicon strap which will fit much better. And movement wise it is superior to that 7s26 and even some 4r35 when it comes to technical perspective. Reliable and simple look, fits anything even for suits, both sporty and classic looking.

Hi! Im just curious. What is the difference between watches that have the "japan mov't" marking on the 6 and other who have "japan" marking only. Coz im planning to buy a mako 2 and the one that they sell here has the "japan" marking only not like the other mako 2 which sells online with the "japan mov't" so i was curious whats the difference between them. Thanks

The only thing I don't like about this watch is the lacking of lume on the second hand. Otherwise it would be perfect for the price.
@watchspec
@watchspec 5 лет назад
Hi Lanciarules, I'm with you on that... I'm surprised that Orient didn't include lume on the second hand - so typical of a dive watch. But my guess is that they did this in order to give it that red aesthetic instead. Still great for the price. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching. -Jon Rihtar

It sure is the SKX killer. There's no argument about that. SKX is overrated af

Haha. Thanks for the comment Faheem. I appreciate your passion. I still love my SKX, but it's true that the Mako II has a love of upgrades over the SKX. Both great pieces in their own way, depending on what is important to the person wearing it. Thanks for watching, -Jon Rihtar

a bang for buck value diver and another great review jon. orient is virtually non existent in aus. saw the kano with red/maroon bezel in japan back in feb this year and should have got it. more or less down to a lack of appreciation for orient at the time. it's available via shoppinginjapan.net (a top site for JDM's). your thoughts on the kano if you've had a chance to look at it jon as your'e there in the states? thank you and keep the great content coming.

Yup, that bezel is a real pain. Took off mine and replaced it with a coin-edge, and a ceramic dual time insert. An easy mod with all parts available from Marc at longislandwatch.com.
