Origami (折 り 紙, Japanese pronunciation: [oɾiɡami] or [oɾiꜜɡami], from ori meaning "folding" and kami meaning "paper" (kami changes to gami because of rendak)) is the art of paper folding that is often associated with Japanese culture. In modern usage, the word "origami" is used as a term encompassing all folding practices, irrespective of the culture of origin. The goal is to transform a flat, square piece of paper into a finished sculpture using folding and carving techniques. Modern origami practitioners generally advise against using incisions, glue, or marking on the paper. Origami folders often use the Japanese word kirigami to refer to designs that use cuts, although cutting is more characteristic of Chinese paper products.
A small number of origami basic folds can be combined in a variety of ways to create intricate designs. The most famous origami model is the Japanese paper crane. Generally speaking, these designs start with a square sheet of paper, the sides of which can be of a variety of colors, prints, or patterns. Traditional Japanese origami, practiced since the Edo period (1603-1867), often followed these conventions less rigorously, sometimes cutting out the paper or using non-square shapes to start with. Origami principles are also used in stents, packaging, and other engineering applications.
