My dad was a greaser in the late 50's - early 60's. I did the metal head/headbanger thing in the 80's ie leather jacket, jeans, long hair etc. I knew then I was nothing but a modern variation of what my dad was when he was my age. You're right, it all goes back to the greasers.

@@luicaliberfan9969 no. A metalhead is like a greaser but different music taste. Same bikes and leather jackets but also bullet belts, longer hair (often curly), a lot of denim vests with patches and boots.

Excellent video, and well researched history my friend. It was very similar beginnings for the British Ton-Up boys (rockers) of the 1950s. Although, Great Britain did not have 'hotrods' or easily accessible V8 engines like Flatheads, what they did have was an entire generation of youths that grew up during the War, and favored the dozens of different British motorbikes like BSA, Norton, Matchless, Vincent, and Triumph during the 1950s, as their rebellion against the status quo; and they were the first generation of English teens that didn't have to do mandatory National Service (military). So, these young hooligans, in love with American rock'n'roll and having an anti-establishment mindset, adopted and adapted the rebellious image of the RAF Spitfire pilots of WWII, these bikers were the original "Wild Ones" of England, and they were called Ton-Up boys, and later on called Rockers. In essence they were the British equivalent of the American Greasers. Cheers mate

@davidbradley6040

You have to remember that there had been street gangs since the beginning.Many of them had long greased hair.The main post WW2 difference aws the adoption of bike and flying leather jackets (that one the fonz wore was an early design for WWI pilots) Many inner city streetgang greasers still retained the James Dean type windcheaters or (as called in UK) Harringtons.
@krypticart6306
@krypticart6306 7 лет назад
Of course street gangs go way back even before the 40's and 50's. The traditional leather jacket, blue jean wearing greaser comes right out of the WW2 era. Now one thing I have noticed in the states we have regional dialect, There are differences in style, slang, and lifestyle. A lot of the style depends on where you are from and what influences you had growing up. I grew up inner city on the west coast so a lot of greasers were gang oriented. We wore everything from boots, leather, and denim to cotton jackets, windbreaker, cotton dickie pants, chucks, lace up dress shoes. The main greaser look that stands out to everyone does come from the biker clubs that the WW2 vets started when they came home even down to the names of the clubs which stem from bomber groups that nicknamed them self's back in the war.
@davidbradley6040
@davidbradley6040 7 лет назад
True.In UK we had Teds who wore Drape jacket suits and Rockers which was the british name for Greasers.Sometimes we got on,sometimes we didn't but as time went on there was more interchange between the two groups,usually in reaction to upcoming styles eg Mods Skinheads etc

From what I read the greaser look/culture was more of a defense mechanism with Puerto Rican, Italians and Greek youths who were facing racial discrimination pre Civil Rights era who were treated like second class citizens similar to African Americans. So it was kinda like their Black Panther movement sorta kinda. I think when average somewhat well to do whites started to pick up on it it was seen as more rebellious...

You hooked me with the Wild One thumbnail, I love that film - it uncannily evokes my own burgeoning forays into omnipresent love deity as well as the specific musical preferences of one of my early victims... err, girlfriends. I did know about the origins of greasers / biker clubs but your wholehearted insights were nonetheless an interesting listen. I never properly belonged to any tribe although rockabilly and '50s b-movies were always my thing. Be lucky, brother.

When I grew up(born in early 80s) I had an older cousin(born in the 60s) who was the stereotypical cool dude on a motorcycle with a sharp classic leather jacket with zippers and shit. I didn't understand where it came from but even for my generation that was super iconic and I wanted that jacket as a kid.

Well technically the first “proto greasers” were ww1 vets coming back from the western front in 1918 and made biker gangs namely he gypsy jokers and hells angels. And they mad the first proto greasers but it was ww2 vets in the 40s that started to popularize it.

I don’t understand how PTSD is “liberal pc culture.” It’s literally just a medical term. Shell shock was a term coined in World War I to describe the type of posttraumatic stress disorder many soldiers were afflicted with during the war. It is a reaction to the intensity of the bombardment and fighting that produced a helplessness appearing variously as panic and being scared, flight, or an inability to reason, sleep, walk or talk. So to label all cases of PTSD as shell shock is rather irrational considering shell shock only refers to a specific form of post traumatic stress disorder.

Been a greaser since the 1970s, but in England. Never had problems with Teddy Boys; they seemed to consider me a "cousin", always been friendly to me. The original model to me was Jimmy Dean. Back then people thought I was a Punk Rocker which was fine with me. Being a Punk Rocker was easy: everybody had long hair; all it took was to wear a leather jackets, jeans, boots, shades, bandanas, smoking Lucky Strikes, playing pinball and the music was uptempo, 3 minute songs, high energy: a new wave of Rock'n'Roll when what was popular was English Prog Rock and California hippies' stuff. When Punk Rock became Hardcore, I wanted nothing to do with that; I liked The Stray Cats, The Rockats, etc.. as I liked the Ramones. In the early '80s London was very different from now; went to clubs 3/4 nights per week, there were 1000s of us in every area, living in squats, being very non-conformist. The lines between punks, rockers, heavy metal kids, neo-mods, teds, bikers and goths were kinda blurred. I'm still the same now, the only one left, lol! Thanks for posting this 😎
