Origin was started back in 2011 by Black Belts, Pete Roberts, and André Almeida “Dedeco”, in Farmington, Maine, USA, on the idea that Roberts wanted to make American made Gi’s and create a BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) lifestyle brand that spoke directly to the needs of the everyday BJJ enthusiast. After some long searching and hunting for a loom that could start producing Gi’s on, they had met, along the way, a man named Lenny Davis that taught them how to sew Pearl Weave. They then called that weave “American Pearl Weave”, a cotton fabric. Cotton sourced and produced here, directly in the United States. With the Company growing Origin was looking for a popular name and face to help grown their platform and start having Origin be known worldwide. One name kept popping up, “Jocko” was his name and badassery was his game. An American author, podcaster, and retired United States Navy officer who served in the Navy SEALs and is a former member of SEAL Team 3. Jocko started gaining popularity back in 2015/2016 after his book “Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win” hit the shelves and became The New York Times #1 Bestseller. It was during dinner that Pete and Jocko had “A steak and a handshake” and a partnership was born. Jocko’s new brand of performance supplements under Origin was a huge hit and the quickly led to over 70% of the profits for Origin USA.
When I first received my Gi, there was a note in the bag talking about “pearling”. Pearling is when the fabric pills up into little fabric beads of yarn. This process also allows the Gi to strength through these thread materials getting bunched and stretched together to make an even stronger bond than when the Gi was purchased. The Pearl Weave and PolySynth© yarn make for a durable fabric that is ironclad in performance and breathability. You can hold up the jacket and see through the threads of yarn but, the strength of the Gi holds up to its American made roots. Origin “developed a proprietary, pre-shrunk PolySynth© yarn, engineered to be 10x stronger than any pearl weave yarn on the market, and 100x stronger than the industry standard. When twisted, the hexagonal structure of the staple fibers interlock with one another, allowing moisture to pass between the weave, but not get absorbed into the yarn itself. This would be the foundation for American Smart Pearl© GEN 3.” (Originmaine.com). This process enables the longevity of the Gi and a tear in an Origin Gi is considered a malfunction and one should reach out to Origin’s customer service to see what they could do for you. “The Path” Gi is also very light and does not hold moisture like other Gi’s. Even with getting doused in sweat, the fabric stayed soft yet strong. Origin’s “The Path” Gi is a work of art within itself. “The Path” refers to “The Path” that one takes on their jiu-jitsu journey. The sewn in Origin logo with colors blending from white, to blue, to purple, brown, and then black with red accents at the end, the symbol of mastery. The circle (O for Origin as well) denoting the never-ending journey of jiu-jitsu. That once you get your black belt, you are a white belt all over with a clean slate and a lifetime ahead of grappling artistry that keeps going on and on through one’s life. I ordered the A2/ Medium sized jacket that fit me perfectly. The fit is true to size although, I do think it shrinks a little bit, not much, but enough to feel a little snug than when first purchased. The Pants are also a work of art within themselves. The pants fit athletically but are not overly baggy nor are they very tight. I have larger legs and quads (from being a runner and baseball catcher for most of youth) and it is hard for me to find jeans that fit will in the upper leg area, let alone competition Gi pants that vary from each different maker and producer. The Origin Pro Pant fit great though. They are very breathable and wick away moisture very well so that one does not have the wet heaviness weighing one down while training for long sessions or competing in tournaments. According to Origin USA, the Pro Pants are “Engineered with Atomic Twill GEN 2, these pants feature four primary advancements, including: soil-release, anti-wrinkle, stain-repellent and "inside out" moisture-wicking. If one is wanting to add the Pro Pants to their GI (not all Gi Jackets off a Pro Pant combo) it will cost one $20 for the upgrade. The Pro Pants fit comfortably and true to size. I would recommend one going with whatever waist size one wears for jeans/ pants. As far as the length, that is more of a personal choice. I went with the 28” length meant for one that is between 5’9-6ft. This length comes down just above my heals and gives me a good fit and style that I prefer to train and compete in.
