Journey into the cinematic galaxy with our DIY tutorial on recreating the iconic STAR WARS lightsaber effect. Uncover the secrets of the original magic as we guide you through simple steps, featuring in-camera brilliance for that authentic glow. May the force be with you as you embark on this journey to bring the STAR WARS charm to your own creations! #STARWARS #DIYLightsaber #MovieMagic
The lightsaber from Star Wars is arguably the most famous weapon in the history of cinema.
Go back in time to 1977 and learn how the lightsaber was first captured with the help of the highly reflective material "Scotchlite" & a compact motor at the hilt.
If you want to try this out yourself, "Scotchlite" tape rolls can be found at local hardware store for around $10.
I also went in search of a Graflex flashgun handle and was lucky enough to find one but it was one from the 60s and not the sleek silver version that Luke uses in Episode IV & V.
Enjoy guys, and I'm not seeing Star Wars till Sunday morning, so it's going be tough reading comments till then.
The opening of this episode is a little scene I've always wanted in a Star Wars movie... acquiring a Kyber crystal and constructing a lightsaber.
I know there is that deleted scene from Return of the Jedi of Luke adjusting his lightsaber settings, but I want a little more in depth account.
Music by: Big Fok & Paul Dateh

Hey, Shanks FX. I want to start out by saying that I'm a huge fan of your work. This video is by far my favourite. It actually inspired me to make my own Lightsaber a couple of years ago for a college project. I just wanted to say thank you for giving me that inspiration and for conveying George Lucas' original vision. I hope to see more of your work in the future. May the Force be with you.

@@ShanksFX1 it is pretty awesome. I also enjoy your Creating the Cosmos series of videos. I think I'll give some of those methods a shot for a few videos I want to make. You know, give them a real looking edge to them. That Star Trek warp effect with the fan and the LEDs certainly gave me an idea regarding Doctor Who.

Thank you for making this! I now understand perfectly how the entire process worked, the actual featurette left me more confused and unable to understand fully what they meant. Bonus for also explaining about how the original method was done away with with the later films, I noticed how the blades never had as much of that "pulsing" effect in the later films as they did in the first, now I understand why. I always thought it was a cool extra detail that was unique in the first film. On the subject, think you could make videos on the later methods for the effect? If you've already done that, care to forward me the links? Thanks.

May I ask what type of camera you used to shoot this? I'm currently attending film school & loved the look of all of your footage. I'm currently in the market for a higher end personal camera that I will be able to record great footage with but it still be easily to take with me on the go. Any advice would greatly be appreciated! Thank you and I love your work!

+John Kyle (yipjumpmusic) I've been shooting a lot with the Sony FS7 as of late but most of most of this video was actually shot with the Canon 6D. The Sony FS7 is awesome but it sure it nice to have a smaller camera that I can maneuver around with ease. I'd focus on getting a 3 good lenses. A Wide Angle, Macro Lens, and a fast 50mm that can shoot really well in low-light settings. I'd love to have a Sony A7S (1 or the 2) as a B-camera to my Sony FS7.

If you really want the original, there are people that make and sell replica graflex flashguns. Pretty good ones and fairly cheap too (around 200 dollars). Check out The Custom Saber Shop, they have a full graflex saber kit and lots of other saber parts. The stunt sabers made today, you practically don't even need special effects for it.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS ahead - PROCEED with CAUTION I'm back on the gird after now have watched Episode 7. Tons of fun & didn't realize that the original lightsaber from "A New Hope" would have as much screen time as it did. I wonder how that Luke's original lightsaber made it into that box. ???? And I'm guessing Luke still has his lightsaber from Return of the Jedi ???? Could Rey possible be offspring of Ben Kenobi ? I think Luke as dad would be too obvious. (I like the idea of a person with "the Force" who doesn't need to have it running in the family, then we are dealing in the "metaclorine" realm) Also could Supreme Leader Snoke be related to Yoda ? Maybe Kylo Ren goes to Dagobah to finish darkside training. And hopefully Luke trains Rey and makes her harvest her own crystal !!! Just some thoughts & ideas.
@FrancisLaLonde
@FrancisLaLonde 8 лет назад
+Shanks FX I'm wondering about possibility Rey isn't related to any 'main' characters...more somebody (empath? would that be the word?) who can 'learn' from other people's thoughts...thus explaining ability to quickly gain knowledge? Not sure about the Snoke/Yoda theory. Also - wondering about Ren possibly seeking out Luke for training (and/or destroying?) - setting up Ren/Rey finale eventually?

How do you get the blade so bright? I purchased some scotchlite off amazon and it's either a different type of scotchlite (maybe less strong), or your lighting is very powerful. I tried floodlights and other lighting and what seems to work best so far is iPhone flash which I know is not the best to use. I use a canon T3i and it doesn't seem to capture the glow that I saw in your video around 3:30
