Learn more about time keeping abilities, materials, crystals, straps ...

3-4 years ago, I bought one, without knowing it was an original, and as I was clueless in pilot watches, even something historical, seller told me it's from the 50s, not keeping time or reserve, no band, scratches. No other details, except a reference number on the case. I bought it with a few other watches and other stuffs for 35€. I forgot it in a drawer for months, and when I went to my watchmaker for another watch, I took this one too and asked for a quote to service, repair and polish it. And, he send me an email a few days later with a picture of the movement, and it's a Laco from WWII, the watch was revised and now works like a charm. To be honest, It's too big for my taste but, since then, I bought another pilot watch, a Laco Palermo 39mm orange and I love it. I have often thought about selling it to buy something else, or exchanging it for a Submariner no date but, as it is the best deal I have made in my life, being superstitious, I prefer to keep it, as a good luck charm and to remind me that sometimes, life gives us gifts.

Great video. I liked your spontaneous input about cigarettes being more harmful then radium. Whether true or not, made me count that every year i smoke away one watch. So i left cigs and bought myself Laco. Dankeschön!

Thanks Tim. That. Was. Fantastic. What an honour for you. What a magnificent time piece. Of course the original B-Uhr is special beyond words but credit where credit is due: the Laco re-issue is a great piece, but what Mr. Platz has been able to do with Time Factors is *incredible.* I've been aware of that Precista Flieger for a short while and really admire what he has done with the Smiths brand. I really like the Everest PRS25, but what I think is really special are his Mil-Spec re-makes, especially the new Mk11's. To my eyes, Time Factors are *the* most interesting new independent watch maker in the market today, and the more I hear about Eddie Platz, the more impressed that I am. Thank-you for a great upload Tim. One of the most exciting reviews that I've seen for a while now. Cheers and Best. Anthony.

Wow! This is the first time I see an original B-Uhr in a live review, and it is fascinating! The proportions really make you feel like you are back to childhood. I'm still a bit concerned about the radium paint, and honestly, if I had one of those watches, I would keep it in a lead lined case, just to be on the safe side. Maybe being a teenager when Reactor N.4 in Chernobyl went kaboom left me a bit paranoid. What surprised me is the size of the movement itself. I expected a movement with a diameter around 36-40 mm, like the Unitas/ETA 6497 they use in the Time Factors, but it is almost as big as the watch itself - really amazing, it makes you feel small. Anyway, I'm glad that you and Eddy from Time Factors became so connected, it gave us the possibility to see this original B-Uhr and all the pieces from Time Factors, which is something very rare to be seen on RU-vid. Congrats!

A lot of old watch movements in general don't hack & have low beat rates of around 18,000 vph. I guess the pocket watch movement these could have been modified to hack, but it looks like there wasn't a requirement for it.

What a fantastic video. Thanks for posting. I have one of the modern Lacos and it is superb for timing. I was running late for an appointment and driving in my car and glancing at the watch I could see exactly how much time I had--it is so easy to read the minutes and seconds with a quick glance. Wonderful watch and a great historic vintage look.
@j.burgess4459
@j.burgess4459 4 года назад
It's interesting that the Luftwaffe navigators were getting watches which were so much bigger than their (wie sollen wir sagen?) "colleagues" in the RAF. I have a Jaeger-LeCoultre military issued chronometer from about 1943 that is currently at the vintage atelier of JLC for service appraisal; it's an attractive little watch, but very small by modern standards - about 34mm.
@H0kram
@H0kram 4 года назад
I was thinking the same. When he handled it I realize how HUGE that watch is. While RAF had those tiny Omega. And out of practicality, I'd definitely go with that huge size to read the time at first glance. More time to look out for ennemy aircrafts and targets.
@ericgrace9995
@ericgrace9995 4 года назад
What most people don't realise is that the pilot of a bomber was really just a "bus driver", whose job was to get the bomber near the target. Approaching the target, the bomb aimer took command of the aircraft and gave the pilot directions. His job was to get the Lancaster or B17 over the target to unload it's bombs. This was the hard part as the bomber had to fly in a straight line, making it an easier target for flak. Job done, the pilot took over control to get the bomber back to base. The time over the target was usually measured in minutes, which is why "pilots" watches ( they should really be called bomb aimers watches ) emphasise minutes rather than hours. I guess the Luftwaffe had the same approach to command as the RAF.

UNITAS can't have ghost position, as it doesn't have a date function. I'm surprised the old original doesn't have seconds hacking, as that was one of the main requirements for a Buhr so people could sync together. I guess it doesn't work, or the watch has been manipulated.

The movement in there is a Durowe D5, especially designed for this watch, with specifications as required by the RLM - Reichs-Luftfahrt-Ministerium (roughly translated "ministry of aviation"). The size is 22"' (about 50mm) - size matters in terms of precision; especially the size, and weight, of the balance, which is a temperature compensating bimetal one, by the way.

Wow that was cool seeing the original. Thanks Tim. As to the radium, I think the level of radiation is so low that the risk is negligible, unless you were to do something like open it up, crush the radium up, and do your best Tony Montana. Finally, a request - if you're going to say a long German word, also write it out as a caption on the screen. I suspect many non-german speakers like me might like to learn what the German watch words are when you use them, but we have no chance when it's just pronounced. At least those of us who are ignorant Americans who barely received a proper education in English in public school, let alone anything about how to speak another language 😬 (I'm an American who has worked closely with Europeans for many years in business; one thing it's taught me is what a poor job our schools do on language education. So I poke fun at myself and my country over this.)
