It's amazing how they originally wanted to make Godzilla stop-motion, but TOHO deemed it too expensive at the time, and now here we are in 2023, and people can do stop-motion with the cost of a NECA Godzilla figure.

nothing beats the original one, one of the most heart racing scenes in cinema history. The stop motion one looks like some kid playing with a toy and rushing to get it finished without taking time to make the animation smooth

agreed - you could argue the success of that original scene launched the series that has lasted 70 years
@ardillarojo

Stop motion can look impressive- as in the original King Kong from the 30's or in Jason and the Argonauts, but this does indeed look cheap and rushed- as in Birdemic level cheap.

The 1954 film did use stop motion for two particular scenes. One was Godzilla swinging his tail, and the other was a firetruck flipping over and crashing onto a building
@alasdairandrew1447
@alasdairandrew1447 7 месяцев назад
Also Stop Motion was used when Godzilla destroyed The Clock Tower too!
@Orsonzilla

Money wasn’t the only reason they didn’t use stop motion. Time was factor. The number of effect scenes and their length meant it would take seven years to animate.
@captaincomedian6320
@captaincomedian6320 7 месяцев назад
For the short amount of time Godzilla is shown in this first movie? If there's any truth to this, that 7 years was hugely overestimated. Even fully stop motion-animated movies take no more than 2 or 3 years to make!
@imfsresidentotaku9699
@imfsresidentotaku9699 7 месяцев назад
@@captaincomedian6320Are you seriously second-guessing a special effects wizard like Eiji Tsuburaya? I’m pretty sure that he knew enough about methods for creating effects to estimate how much time he would’ve needed to do so, and it wasn’t just time and money that was the issue, but also a lack of experienced animators in Japan at the time that made suitmation more practical. Not to mention, Godzilla was made just nine years after World War II. At the time, Japan was attempting to pull themselves out of economic hardship, so logically, certain resources and materials were not readily available. Context matters.
@captaincomedian6320
@captaincomedian6320 7 месяцев назад
@@imfsresidentotaku9699 YES, I'm telling you that animating Godzilla in stop-motion for that first movie is by no means a 7 year job. If there were no stop-motion animators in Japan and Tsuburaya wasn't familiar with it, and other factors were at play, then his overestimate of 7 years at least makes sense. All I can tell you is that the first King Kong puppet was finalized in 1931 and the movie was released in 1933. That's 2 years or less of tons of stop-motion and other analog special effects, with much more Kong than Godzilla in their respective movies, and only 1 or 2 guys working on Kong's stop-motion.

@@captaincomedian6320 I'm glad to find someone else has common sense. 7 YEARS is a whopping miscalculation. Aside from that I actually have an underlying suspicion that japan wanted to do something different that sets them apart from stop motion. I mean, they've been doing suitmation for years, predating godzilla. So, for theory's sake that could've been the case. Not certain tho

@@floridaman4596 Why did they use that ugly hand puppet?
@Poliostasis
@Poliostasis 8 месяцев назад
@@surgeonsergio6839 Because, wearing the first Godzilla suit ever made back then was much... MUCH more of a pain to deal with and for shots where only the head or top half-quarter of the body, it was overall safer to go with the safe option. The suit actor was literally being cooked alive inside the suit, in later movies the suits were made more and more efficient and useable, but yeah.
@surgeonsergio6839

0:10 I never liked the second version made by the Americans because it takes away the original message about the dangers of atomic bombs and the political talk, in addition to adding this character who narrates everything as if the viewer were an idiot.

What I would love to see is this scene and even the Attack on the city made as a fan short with the designs of the new Godzillas in the present. Be that Minus One, Shin, Monsterverse or even for the heck of it, the 98 Godzilla. I've seen extreme great quality work from fans, such as Zatoichi, or Zatoichi vs Predator. These made by apparently the same people, and even the actor playing Zatoichi looked pretty much like The late Shintaro Katsu. So I think that making a Black and White short with the modernized designs of the present different Godzillas would be fun.
