These are so well-acted and well paced. They're about character, events, and the people of their time. No "messages" or attempt to change society in the plots and themes. P.D. James fine mind and fine writing come across.
I have been looking for this for a while since watching it at the time of release. Couldn't get any links off google referencing the Thames tunnel but managed to get the title off Amanda Root's wiki filmography ( whom I'm a huge fan). A proper, non celebrity, cast of trained actors, a real filmatic quality to the musical interludes, this is a real class thriller in the manner of Inspector Morse. The first episode is best watched twice, because trying to follow what's happening probably spoils what is a relaxing symphony otherwise.
Wow. Great writing - if it's on the page, it can be on the screen. Fabulous cinematography. The omniscient camera in this is like the all seeing eye of the Egyptian God. What a beautiful building in which such ugly things happen. And the soundtrack for the series, the strings, are pitch perfect. The actors, all of them dead on. Marsden - Dalgliesh, as always, head and shoulders above everyone else in empathy and intelligence. PD James keeps it real, too! No one can curse you out like the British and to say it all in a Dickinson slant. IS there a fresher hell than a bureaucracy, an organized hierarchy in which people peck each other to damn death? Surely, that is original sin: bound to be Wrath, bound to be murder following the inside job of the poisonous pen in a publishing house no less. Brilliant and so contemporary.
It's weird I am in New Zealand and don't see any adverts and except for the odd missing episode they have all been great quality. Thanks again for uploading 🤗🖒❤💯✔
The Venetian Palazzo building was created on the Pier Head in Wapping, East London. There are two Regency terraces on either side of a tree lined garden which leads straight down to the Thames. They must have built the Venetian facade all over the waterfront elevation of the western terrace together the the landing stage and archway. The side of the building is unaltered and you can see them going in and out of the porch. It has nothing to do with Fishmongers' Hall which is on the north bank of the Thames right next to London Bridge and upstream from Tower Bridge rather than downstream..
Thank you very much; you both satisfied and piqued my curiosity and thus led me to a great blog (alondoninheritance dot com). I'm beyond amazed that you knew the location; just for fun, I'm adding a link for a pic of the side of the building, which is seen very clearly around 4:30 in ep 2 (and the link is from another great blog). Thanks again! charlessaumarezsmith.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/wpid-20141214_0941253.jpg PS: Not as hard to figure out, but: The mystery writer lives in Digby Mansions (you can see Hammersmith Bridge thru her French doors).
So glad to have led you to find out more. I'm only guessing about how the landing stage and facade were created and hope someone who worked on the construction will tell us. Thanks for the great photograph. The buildings and garden are a rare and handsome survivor of a more elegant age. The historic landing place "Wapping Old Stairs" also survives, just downstream.
Thanks so much for this descriptis on of the building, it really helps to put the location in perspective. Dalgliesh is always found in beautiful locations!
Thanks! If I ever get back to London there re many places like this I want to visit. There is so much of London to see that is lovely and historically interested that isnt crowded with tourists (like me).
@Ellen Spear: Apt and funny -- thanks for the smile. (Also, I always forget his name, tho I like his work -- don't see it often enough to remember. But now I will.)
Install a safe, free adblocker (like uBlock Origin) -- makes a huge difference. Also, the muting isn't the uploader's fault; if the ep or movie contains copyrighted music, the CR holder can demand muting of that section of the vid (which is better than the CR holder demanding the takedown of the ep).
Here in Canada, I have never seen any the ads that people complain about it either on this video or many others. I thank you for putting up with this since no doubt they pay for the rest of us to see it.
@@granthurlburt4062I’m also in Canada. I’ve noticed that when I watch anything on RU-vid on my PC laptop, I never get ads. I had no idea what people were talking about until I got an Apple device. On the Apple, I got the ads. Conclusion…..trash the Apple devices, stick to any other brand.
The muting is brief, and it's a small price to pay for being able to see this at will, for free. :) Plus, the muting is beyond the uploader's control -- YT will mute the sound at the request of whoever holds the copyright for the music.
Can't watch anything on utube anymore! The films and series that are half decent are presented with distorted pictures or too many ads randomly inserted. Shame really, free internet has disappeared forever.
Lucky you in California. I'm dependent on RU-vid for films in English, I've got used to the commercials, the price I pay for free entertainment, but deeply disappointed when episodes are missing. Greetings from France.
You should try living in Germany. Every household is FORCED to pay the TV and radio licence - whether they have a TV set or not. This is because you can watch German TV via the Internet. The thing is .. why would anyone even WANT to do that? All the good stuff is bought in and why watch it in German? Now that Filmon is no longer free of charge, RU-vid is practically the only way to watch anything in English free of charge.
Do what I do. I download the films and the adverts are not there. They don't download. I can also change the aspect ratio and colour even change a film to greyscale, which I like to do when I have seen the movie before.
34:49 We already know He is going to be Killed & that he deserves to die . Yes , We already know it will be justifiable homicide . Even if the law doesn't see it that way ..the only 3 questions are Who, When & How .
It's probably because there was a song and there were copyright issues. With the song muted the file can stay up, but with the song playing someone would make them take it down.
nancy williams: Nerdlove is correct. Watch again: Instrumental music is playing as Dalgleish enters the church, at 20:39. YT mutes the sound whenever there is a copyright challenge by the owner of the music. The copyright holder of an entire vid can demand that the vid be taken down or that ads be inserted (with the money going to the CR holder); the CR holder of any music used in the ep can demand the muting of any section of the vid containing the music owned. (I've had a few YT channels over the years; I know whereof I speak.)
But why protest when someone has gone to the trouble to upload something so you can watch it, for free, in the comfort of your home (or wherever), whenever you want? Why not thank the uploader for using his/her time to make your life a little more pleasant? :)
@@patricias5122 I've had 7 channels over the years (all featuring only hard-to-find old movies), and I uploaded everything for the pleasure of sharing with people who might otherwise have no access. I never monetized my content, nor did any of the channels I watched. So that's my perspective. In addition, I don't see any ads on this, so I assumed that the uploader didn't monetize but instead shared the content to be nice. Maybe give people the benefit of the doubt, maybe be less cynical. Ahem.
@@JJ21210 I love you platonically for doing this. You make the world a better place for me and hundreds of others. These are such classy and well-made shows.
I am extremely disappointed with this. The picture quality is abysmal. I may as watch an old black and white silent movie from pre-1929. If you can't upload with good picture and sound quality, or cannot get around copyright don't bother uploading.
