Origins: The Firmament of Genesis 1 

This still beckons many questions that we will never know the answers to... but, whatever this world is and however it was made, there is one thing I do know .... God created it!!!

I'm a former atheist (I made a testimony video on my channel). The toughest thing I've found is not convincing non-believers that there's a God it's convincing those that believe in the bible to believe in the bible. Knowing the Bible won't bring you salvation, living it will. Nothing above God, love him first and foremost and love one another as Jesus loved us. Seek first the Kingdom of God.

Most people in the past used the stars as guide, specially ships, to get to different places. We probably won't be able to understand how God really created this beautiful place, but one thing is for sure, is not the way nasa and other agencies put it. The Bible describes exactly the way God made it. I don't think He would lie to us about his creation. Why would he do that? Genesis chapter 1 explains it to the dot and I'm not about to doubt his word, not now, not ever. God bless you all..

The firmament is a solid barrier somewhere high up in the sky. When you read in Genesis 7:11 the story of the flood. You see it clearly says “The WINDOWS OF HEAVEN were opened and rain fell upon the earth 40 days and 40 nights. Then in Genesis 8:2 when the flood was subsiding, it clearly says “ the WINDOWS OF HEAVEN were closed and the rain was restrained. There is water above the earth but being held back by some sort of solid barrier/window according to the Bible. Make no mistake about it

Day 4 god places the sun, moon and stars in the expanse or firmament. It’s really not that hard to figure out where the sun moon and stars are. The tricky part is figuring out what it means to be separated from the waters on the other side by a ‘huge expanse that no man can cross’ 😐 Psalm 148 1 Praise the LORD.Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights above. 2 Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his heavenly hosts. 3 Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars. 4 Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies.

The problem here again is that they are modernizing everything. You have to take what is written literal. If you take the time to Google firmament. It tells exactly what it is. God never changes, he stays the same. So, if he never changes neither does his creation. Stop interpreting to your idea. It's always his idea, not yours.

I loved this, because I've always related waters above the firmament, to the windows of heaven being opened, during God's flooding of the earth in Noah's time, just like opening a window in your house, there is an inside and an outside of that window. We have a big God with big planning, His ways are not our ways. We have seen nothing yet. Wait until the third heavens and earth takes place! Everybody seems to be more concerned with translating the Hebrew word as opposed to examining the actual word that king James’ royal Council used to translate the word. “Firmament” can be explained as such, the suffix “-ment” means “mental”, such as “govern-ment” means “to govern the mind”. “Firma-“ is greek and means “plane”, such as “terra firma” means “earth plane”... therefore “firmament” would essential imply “mental-plane” or the imagination also known as the “ether”. everything that exists in this world begins in the thoughts of our minds. we are created in gods image (image-nation). just like God created everything in this world, we are given the ability to pull from this imagination and create in the material world.

He created the firmament (dome) on the second day because in the beginning there was water everywhere. We are told that the Spirit of God hovered over the waters (Genesis 1:2) before anything was created. Once the firmament (dome) was created, the waters above it that were there originally didn't go anywhere. Earth is also described as a circle and the heavens stretched out like a tent (Isaiah 40:22). If you also look into amateur videos of stars instead of from satellite imagery and CGI, you'll notice that even on the moon there is waves -- this shows that there is water behind it as well as behind stars. It's the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).

The firmament does not mean expanse or heaven. The ancients believed the earth was flat. The expanse was what was on THE OTHER SIDE of the firmament. Genesis seems to confirm their theory.

KJV says heaven and FIRMament. The modern Bibles call it heavens and expanse so it lines better with the "science" of heliocentric

Expanse? Where does anybody get a translation like that? The firmament of the Bible is but a solid transparent DOME.

It’s interesting to me to hear people grapple with the meaning of the creation story. The word firmament is defined as an archway, which is what the sky looks like from earth. The firmament separating the waters explains why it rains, why the sky is blue, because water looks blue. A primitive explanation by people trying to understand their physical world. Amazingly, the creation story goes on to talk about how God created everything but it doesn’t say he creates the water, that was already there before he created anything almost like without the water he couldn’t have created the firmament at all. I also believe when God said let there be light, he wasn’t referring to physical light but pure energy.

There is, in Hebrew, the disjunctive Waw; the disjunctive Waw is attached to a non-verb in the beginning of its clause. The function of this disjunctive Waw is to make a break in a prior narrative sequence. Verse two of Genesis begins with a disjunctive Waw attached to the definite noun the Earth. It is from this point that the creation narrative actually begins- which is why it seemed the heavens were created twice. This is seen clearly in the fact that the dry land was what God called the earth- which happened on the third day. The Hebrew word raqi'a is, in reality, a passive participle acting as an adjective or noun; in Hebrew this is called a benuni savil [בינוני סביל] or a qatil [קָטִיל]. This means that the word raqi'a is that which is being stretched or being expanded- the action is not complete. This is evident in the expanding nature of the universe itself. The raqi'a is, definitely, the place we refer to as space and is the place in which the heavenly bodies were placed. The birds, as explained on the fifth day, fly on the "face of the expanse of the heavens" which means that they fly before or in front of the raqi'a of the heavens. The Hebrew pani means literally faces, but is used for presence or the position of being before or in front of someone or something.

I don't know where he's getting the idea that of the 17 times that the firmament is mentioned, that 8 of those times it's not talking about the same thing as in Genesis. I have read all of the passages about the firmament and it's the same thing in all of them just like Genesis. There is no "wiggle room" unless you don't understand the passages that the word firmament is used in, which I can only assume that to be the case here since he doesn't understand that it's the same thing. 5 of those 8 are in Ezekiel 1 & 10 and Ezekiel is definitely seeing the Firmament in the heaven. 1 of those 8 says that the firmament shows god's handiwork-that's definitely referring to him CREATING the firmament, 1 is in Daniel speaking of those who are wise shining like the firmament. In other words, those that are wise to what is happening in the final days will be bright and glorious like the firmament. Why is the firmament bright a glorious? Because the stars are inside of it! The last passage is in Psalms 150:1 and although this is definitely referring to the firmament, it would take a lot of space here to explain what that passage actually means. I think the problem with the word "Expanse" in our English understanding is that we think of an "Expanse" as an unending open space, but Expanse means the distance of how far something expands. An inch cane be an expanse, but so can a mile. I am glad to see that he doesn't believe that the firmament dissolved after the flood. It's a first step.

Could only get through half of this episode. This Danny guy is explaining the bible according to Danny. I HATE when teachers/pastors/elders/etc reinterpret the bible according to their knowledge. They set themselves up as the expert and you have to come back to them for interpretation. They become smart in their own eyes...I think God warns of doing this, eh? In star wars there is space but not in hebrew cosmology.

Ps.19:1... "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork." And Context. "Heavens" and "Firmament are synonyms in this passage and we see also from vs.4-6 that the sun is certainly not in the ocean as a water vault for the sun, but rather the sky, the heavens, the firmament.

Everyone is being lied to. You can try to change the meaning of the Bible to fit your world view, but when God talked about the "firmament" he meant the glass dome above the earth. Outer space doesn't exist. There's the earth. Hell below us within the earth. Above us is the firmament/glass dome. And above the dome is water. I.e. waters above the firmament, waters below it. And God's throne and Heaven is above us!!! Heaven, earth, and hell. That's it! There is no outer space! No big bang....

Expanse has been introduced in modern Bible translations by the scholars like yourself you have been deceived into believing in the heliocentric model of cosmology.

The Bible teaches us that the firmament is where the birds fly. In the beginning God created the heaven (freezing cold void) and the earth (ball of waters). Water freezes. God placed the firmament in the midst of the waters separating the water above (obviously ice) from the water below (Seas) So, the Bible does teach ... ice canopy.. I guess.. but science demands that that was exactly what happened as well. Insect size.

I feel you have made the Genesis gap more complicated than helpful.

Revelation 22, 18-19, instructs us to not add or change the words, so changing firmament to expanse is not good because it totally changes the context

Interesting presentation. Bit surprised that Dr Faulkner did not elaborate on the Sun and Moon though. Very important to us all.

It's very simple people. The Firmament is our atmosphere and the "waters above" are the rain, snow, sleer, hail, and general moisture/humidity in the air/atmosphere. In addition to the oxygen, argon, and nitrogen gases which make up the air that we breathe, there is also water vapor/moisture/humidity that we take in with every breath. When the air becomes too saturated with water vapor and can no longer be supported by the air molecules, it is released as rain, etc. back down to the Earth's surface containing the "waters below".

So we are in the Firmament? I just started studying. What does.. 'Heaven in the Firmament' mean?

This was interesting since just last night I was reading the first 16 verses of Chapter 1 of Genesis and wondered about the "waters above and below the firmament (expanse)". I had questions about what I read but was discussed in this video. I thank Dr. Faulkner for answering those questions. Actually, my thoughts on the subject were surprisingly close to those presented by Dr. Faulkner. But, there is one question I have that still remains a mystery to me. We see the stars God created. They seem to be continually moving away from us. We measure the distance from the stars in time and not units of distance. The "assumption" is the speed of the light generated by a star travels at 186,000 miles/sec. If that is true and the observations of the stars are correct then how do we explain the time it took to be billions and billions of years to get to our eyes when we trust the Bible to say the creation of that star and its light was only about 6,000 years ago? The only conclusion I can come up with is that the speed of light is really instant and the star we see today is from today and not billions of years ago. But, if that is true, what kind of impact will "instant" light have on our known physics and astronomy?

When I first started this video, I was intrigued to watch it but the Scientist speaker put me off by misinterpreting Genesis 1:1 as Day One creation. The Bible is so distinctly clear on what was created the first day. Genesis 1:1 is an introductory statement. The problem with mankind is that we refuse to accept that daylight is different from sunlight. Day One: God created light and separated light from darkness period and we have day and night nothing else. Day Two: God created a firmament which is the sky called heaven separating the waters which was already in existence before earth was made. The sea of glass like crystal flows from the throne of God. The Spirit of God hovered over the waters above the firmament. Our local waters, God called Seas. It was by the fourth day that God created the sun, moon and stars and set them in the firmament with waters above hence lunar waves and stars dancing in the waters above. On any given daytime when the clouds are grey and it appears rain may fall, we don't see the sun yet we see each other, objects and everywhere...... That is daylight. Sunlight is completely different and you can see why the sun and moon and stars were created.......for signs, seasons, days and years. That is why the ice wall of Antarctica surrounds the seas with dry land (flat earth) all covered by the dome or firmament to complete the 24 hour cycle of time in our own realm. God is timeless, reigns from eternity to eternity. It is the sun, moon and stars that circle the earth within the firmament to complete the daily cycle of 24 hours.

Why do you have Cornerstone in your name if you're leaving out the Cornerstone? Please, focus on Jesus and obeying all His teachings. Matthew 7:24-27 "[24] Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: [25] And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. [26] And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: [27] And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it."

The only problem that I'm hearing, here, is that the Hebrew word for "firmament" never included the key word "in", as we see in our English translations, when it speaks of God placing the lights "in" the firmament/expanse. "In" was an assumptive add-on, which makes us believe that the sun, the moon, and the stars must all be between these two bodies of water. Of course, that's just not the case. It could, just as easily, have said that God placed the lights "beyond" the EXPANSE. This would make our atmosphere "heaven"/"the sky", and the the waters, above, would, quite simply, be the clouds. This would make the most sense, seeing that everything else sounds a bit over-reaching. This passage was speaking about extremely simple things that God did in creating everything. The problem was in the translation of these scriptures, not in the theories that explain the translation.
