Use some "Lock-Tight" (Blue or Red) and that should help with those loose screws.
@mfournier12
@mfournier12 2 года назад
Many ways too prevent the lose screws. Best would be locking nuts, OR drilled bolts with castle nuts and cotter pins, OR safty wire the screws like on aircraft. again requires holes ion the screws for that purpose.

Hi, to stop your gimble screws from coming loose get a tube of thread lock. It is available at any auto parts store or online anywhere. By the way I love how you put your videos together, stay safe and thanks.

Hey guys! We just bought an Origo 6000... for 300$!! It’s in great shape too. Big score we’ve been looking for one for years. But we just got the gimbal set, and the screws were coming loose like you mentioned. I took out the “thick” washer, and it stopped happening. Love your channel, you guys are very authentic, been watching a couple years now. We don’t become patrons because all our money goes into our cruising Kitty, but we always hit the like button! Peace

I love my sun oven, I just got the Haines solar cooker, it's very light and compact. I use that fir traveling. I also have a Origo spirit cooker heater, single burner, love it with my pressure cooker. I live off grid no gas (fracking) no electric, no running water. Only wood heat and hand pumped water. Happy sailing! Ps try locktight on your screws.

Nice review, personally I like how beautifully quiet they are in use compared to the rocket burning sound of LPG! I did a fair amount of research about why alcohol is preferred to LPG on boats - in short, alcohol is a lot more safer to store than LPG as it is none pressurised in it's stored state. If you are using LPG on your boat, if a leak were to occur - LPG is heavier than air and the leaked gas would fall and accumulate in the lowest parts of the boat - probably the bilge space or possibly sleeping quarters - and be a potential explosion waiting to happen, LPG only needs a spark. There are plenty of stories of boats lost, persons injured/killed due to LPG. Thumbs up and well done for promoting the use of alcohol stoves/cookers they are so much safer. Bon Voyage. BH;)))

Two types of Locktight, one is meant to hold but can be undone, the other to hold tight forever and will require great physical exertion to break bond. If you do not need, for maintenance to take these bolts off, use the later. Also, you could mark the bolts and have them drilled, tie wire through hole...aviation industry uses this method. Lastly, if you have the clearances, add two nuts, where you tighten the 2nd hard against the first. The other nut available is a lock nut, a nut with a conical plastic insert that jams itself into position. If there are lock washers, take em off, cause they are helping to undo your bolts in this case. Thanks for sharing & enjoy your adventures.

Have you tried Locktite or compression washers on those loosening screws? I guess you have vern lucky in you supply of alcohol so far. I've had multiple instances of a brand of petfectly fine denatured alcohol which had a production change and while on a trip discovered the newly opened can produces very toxic fumes. One batch was so bad that I had to stay outside while the stove was on.

I had an Origo 3000 on my old boat and loved it, when I used it. I never had a problem with the things heating up too slowly. Alcohol got a bad rep because of the pressurized, Kenyon (sp?) stoves that can flare up when getting started, but the non-pressurized, Origo stoves are great. My new boat has a CNG range that I will look into converting to propane because I am told that CNG can be hard to get outside the US. Of course that will mean installing a propane locker, which CNG doesn't need because it's lighter than air.

I have a 6000 and I'm not covering the burners after use. On mine it takes months for the fuel to evaporate completely. I use a special fuel that is made for those burners though. A couple of advices, have them half filled or more when you are cooking, less or none smelling and way faster cooking time. My burners holds 1,3 liters each when they are full. Never fill from the top unless they are unused for several hours. Open thel lid and remove the burner when filling. Use only fuel that specific is made for this application unless you want to die by different kinds of poisening. Cons, slower cooking times in comparison with propane and 5 times the fuel cost. Pros , you don't live on a bomb. PS. Parts are availible in many places in Sweden, in fact 40 meters from where I am right now (in my boat) :)

I have a heater, not cooker, which I use and use it for power outage, but found a vintage American version heater that puts out more heat, lasts over 8 hours and cooks faster because it is slightly larger. I would not use it on a boat in bad weather, I wouldn’t use any liquid fuel or propane on a boat in bad weather.

As others mentioned, use thread lock to keep screws and bolts in place. Maybe additionally to mention that the color of thread lock fluid/gel determines how hard it will become to unscrew. Red is kinda permanent, Blue is locked, but still unscrew-able! one more thing: let the thead lock untouched at least for a couple of days to cure. Thanks for the review
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 9 месяцев назад
I tried the blue thread lock and put it in right away. It’s been pretty good. In the future I should put the thread lock and let it cure first, then install the hardware? It makes sense since when you buy a kit that has threadlock on the screws, it’s always cured and works like a champ! I’ll give that a try next time I’m working with the stuff.
@BingoBongoMan
@BingoBongoMan 9 месяцев назад
@@RiggingDoctor no, no, I meant put the gel/fluid on and fasten your screw and don't touch it (unscrew/loosen) for a few days until the thread lock cures between screw and bolt. To the best of my knowledge thread lock fluid only cures if it's in contact with metal and left alone for few days! I have seen but not used that pre installed thread lock, but it must be a special mixture since (as you mentioned) it arrives already dried and gets reactivated once put together! But honestly I don't know anything about that dry-version!

Correction: alcohol does cook slower because most commercially available alcohols are not pure... but you can make it pure by applying molecular sieves (do google) or use dried magnesium sulphate to rid the alcohol of any water...which makes the alcohol burn hotter and cook much faster... you wouldn't believe what just 5% water contamination does to the efficiency of the fuel...

@koningbolo4700
@koningbolo4700 4 года назад
@@RiggingDoctor I know, isopropyl alcohol is great and burns quite hot but it is expensive in my country... There is a possibility to get Methanol (also not cheap) but that one can pose health risks... Not sure about isopropyl though... Ethanol is available in a local big box store at 1.72 euros per liter which I remove the 5% water in there... Just now I canted off the pure alcohol to use in the next few weeks. Now molecular sieves have to dry again for the next batch... I do 5 L at the time with 2 kg of molecular sieve pellets in a 10L drum as my "reaction/absorption" vessel.

A diesel stove & oven is what I plan for my boat.. it also doubles as a heater, saving the cost of having both, and means I can use one fuel for everything. Even a diesel outboard. Not to mention it's the safest fuel of the lot. Best of all, unlike propane/butane/alcohol/kerosene/whatever, it's readily available everywhere, and without any hassles tracking it down.
@davemillan3360
@davemillan3360 4 года назад
Single fuel is a big plus, but one drawback for diesel is that it takes some time to heat up the stove top. With gas and alcohol heat is instant and adjustable. With diesel heat will take a while and will be harder to fine tune. With diesel you also need a vent to the outside. Which might not be practical for many boats.
@netpackrat
@netpackrat 4 года назад
Pretty much every commercial fishing vessel above a certain size here in Alaska has a diesel stove, because they double as a heater. But I think that's also the reason most cruisers don't use them, because they tend to stick to warm climates, and want to cook without heating the boat. If you check out Emerald Steel's channel, you'll see that they have a diesel stove, but IIRC they also have the ability to cook with propane so they don't have to run the diesel when it is hot.
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 4 года назад
I almost got a diesel stove oven when I bought the boat. The issue is you will heat the cabin in the summer when you want to make eggs. If you are staying to high latitudes, it will always be on and ready to make breakfast! Those Dickinson heaters work beautifully!

These are truly great stoves. I have the single without gimbals and the double with gimbals. Our single is used daily. Try some thread lock on the gimbal screws. My only objection to these stoves is that the tangs don't come close to each other. A small espresso pot requires some ingenuity. To keep wicks from evaporating I use one of those "rubber" like drain stoppers with the little nub handle cut off.

Rod rigging offers the strongest type of Rigging for the lowest amount of windage. There are always trade offs with rigging and the trade off with rod Rigging is inspectability. The weak point in synthetic is chafe. The weak point in wire are the swaged fittings. The weak point in rod are the heads. When the head is shaped, the process creates a lot of stress at the neck and the stress leads to fracture. Everything will look fine and then the head pops off and the stay fails. The reason inspectability is the trade off is because it can’t be inspected as this part lives inside the end fitting. All you can do is make sure the rod is free of corrosion, the rest is a matter of time. I have seen rod rigging that was more than 10 years old and was fine, and I have also seen rod rigging fail at age 2 months. It is impossible to judge when it will go. If you race, the windage advantage will be important. If you don’t race, I would consider switching to wire or synthetic rigging in the future. These types of rigging have more windage but are more reliable and inspectable.

Fantastic stove. To stop screws coming loose use locktight on the screws rather than over tighten and damage threads. If screws are going into a thin type of tin or thin metal remove screw cover hole with electrical tape then reinsert screw until it starts to twist tape which takes up and gap in thread like plumbers tape but also gets traction on the head of screw which reduces it coming loose during transit. Hope this helps Cheers Steve. Aus

Dometic discontinued the entire Origo alcohol stove line, not just the 6000. No more new stoves OR spare parts. I got a used 3000 (2-burner stove-only version) from Bacon Sail in Annapolis last spring to replace an ancient fixed propane stove. I managed to find the gimbal kit on close-out from Defender, but I wasn't so lucky with the pot-holders (I did manage to get one pair at full price). Defender now has no Origo stoves or parts. That was helpful. I have a 2 burner alcohol stove on the IP i just got, no oven not gimbaled. Was thinking of upgrading to gas and gimbaled. the only thing I don't like about the stove I have other then not gimbaled is the fuel cost. At 9 to 10 bucks a quart using the gaskets I just learned about from you how long will it last? I will work with what I have and see because 400 bucks for a new gimbaled Origo 3000 is about 1/4 the cost of a complete gas conversion not to mention having to create a safe/legal propane locker. What do you burn in your cabin heater with no need for diesel or propane other than you outdoor grill. O and the screws backing out.. did you try some blue lock tight on them?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor Месяц назад
Loctite was the trick! The heater burns diesel. We kept the diesel tank when we converted to electric so now we have a lot of fuel for the heater. Last time we filled up was in 2017 when we added 90 gallons of diesel to the tank. It still has a little left in there! I kept the fuel polishing and filter equipment so the old fuel has never given us problems in that way, but the heater also isn’t very picky. I really like the alcohol stove and will be putting one in our second boat as well. I buy the metal gallon cans of denatured alcohol at Home Depot, but overseas we burned Ethyl Alcohol. The price wasn’t too bad, and once again the stove isn’t too picky about what you pour on the wick. The thing I like best about alcohol is it won’t explode if it leaks, and you can get it anywhere without messing with conversion valves. All the cruisers we met spent their first few days in a country trying to figure out how to get gas. The valves are different or regulation won’t let them fill “that size” of propane cylinder. Worst was some countries use Butane instead of propane and watching them get it setup for the different gas. All I needed to do was find a hardware store for denatured alcohol or a pharmacy for ethyl alcohol. Keep it simple and sail happy!

I would stay with Ethanol and alcohol. Paint thinner will work but the fumes would not be good. I am currently working on converting from propane to induction. I just ordered two Hendi 1000w single burners that I will gimble individually. Even living on a permanent dock propane is getting harder to refill due to environmental and safety regulations for the refill stations. A Orego 1500 will be the backup when all else fails.

S/V Adma I didn’t know propane as becoming a pro-pain to get 🤣 I couldn’t resist. Living at dock, an induction or other electric heat source will be great. We loved 5 years in a marina before cruising and had an alcohol electric unit. It was really nice! Hit a button and the food cooks :)

Hi, great content! I have been trying to buy an Origo 6000 but they’re as rare as rocking horse poo. I have a quick question that you may be able to answer. Is the fuel cartridge heat separated between the bottom drawer and the oven box or does the cartridge get hot. The reason I am asking is that I’m going to convert a gas oven by placing an origo cartridge into the bottom of the oven, it is separated but will definitively get hot in there
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor Год назад
The cartridge does get hot (too hot to touch) but only because everything gets hot. I’m not 100% on the oven parts terminology, but the cartridge has a flame that comes up into the bottom of the oven box. The flame hits a pretty thick and heavy piece of metal on the bottom of the oven box. This piece is removable, held in by gravity alone, and if you take it out you are looking at the top of the flame pipe/damper. There is no open flame in the bottom drawer but it gets hot just by being in contact with other hot metal for over an hour.

basically any high strength alcohol will work. The same alcohol has different names in different countries. In Australia, NZ and Great Britain it is called Methylated Spirits.... around 98% ethanol with 2 % methanol and a little blue dye thrown in. This means you don't pay high tax on it, as it is not for drinking. Commonly used as a BBQ starter or fuel. The blue dye is to warn you not to drink it. Canada and USA have their variations, and the rest of the world too. Just as long as it is alcohol and will burn. Higher strength or industrial is best. Kerosene and diesel will be harder to light and smoke like hell.... and taint your food, stink your cabin out and give you headaches, if used in an alcohol stove. You can store alcohol safely, and it is not explosive. And it won't asphyxiate or poison you when you sleep. If you tip a bottle over and it leaks, you will get an alcohol smell.... wipe up what you can and the rest will evaporate away. It is a good cleaner and doesn't harm anything. Yes it will smell like alcohol, but the fumes don't hurt you. In the unlikely event you have a fire involving alcohol...throw water on it. IT is water based and the fire will go out once it is diluted or doused. It won't explode like other liquid based fuels.

We have tried but always failed to figure out exactly how much we use so we can better ration for a crossing. What I can say is we bought 20L about 5 gallons in Madeira before we set off and didn’t buy any again until we got to Cruz Bay in St. Thomas. It lasted us from September until January! While at sea we used it a lot and in shore we used it less as we ate some of our meals out (and didn’t have to cook). It is readily available in most developed countries but the name is different as you travel around. I would say with 5 gallons you will be safe for an ocean crossing!

So, high proof drinking alcohol wont work? Something like Everclear?
@emmanuellaurens2132
@emmanuellaurens2132 4 года назад
Drinking alcohol is heavily taxed in most countries, while denatured alcohol isn't (it's denatured to make it undrinkable precisely so people won't dodge the tax). But 190 proof drinking alcohol would certainly work, if you can find it and the price is not a problem. Any drinking alcohol over 80 proof (40% alcohol) will burn, keeping in mind that the rest of the liquid is going to be water, which does not help at all in a stove and in fact is going to be soaking up heat while evaporating. By contrast all the ingredients of denatured alcohol burn.

In fact, I think everybody should keep at least a pint of grain alcohol handy. Chemically, isopropyl and ethyl differ in the layout of their carbon and oxygen atoms. Physically, isopropyl, ethyl, denatured, and methanol all burn the same in the stove. Since they all work to cook with, we consider them the same.

It’s been doing great! Last inspection was in October and all was good. I think synthetic is great since you can easily inspect and repair any issues. I also think you should avoid rod like the plague. The heads are stress hardened when they are shaped and have a nasty habit of snapping off without warning. If you don’t do synthetic, do 1x19 preferably compression fittings but otherwise swaged fittings.
