Derek McDonald oh thanks! I’m glad you liked it. Let me know if there are other things that would make for a good show! I need a good excuse to get over there again! Thanks for watching! Have you subscribed?
@@jbenziggy Next time you're around check out the lone pioneer grave on the hill across from Steamboat Hotsprings, Check out the old pioneer cemetery at the end of 5th street in Carson. Neither of these are officially advertised or have any markers, they're just there! Finding remnants of the V&T RR is fun too.
I’ve seen all of your videos. Don’t know how I missed this one. You always have knowledge of what you are teaching us. Keep up the great work. Blessings from Texas
It’s amazing Mark Twain niece had a copy of ...cod fishing off Newfoundland I’m from Newfoundland and as a boy that book was part of our history class .and I have fished cod myself .
howdy and thanks a bunch! I remember a part in mark twains "roughing it" when sam and others tried to follow the ole miner up "lundy canyon" near mono city but never did see where he was mining his gold.. great story ... ....happy trails always....
I love your videos from my old stomping grounds. Northern Nevada high desert is magical. The sagebrush whispers when the wind goes through. There are rivers, lakes and best of all, natural hot springs. Floating the Truckee on tubes are some of my favorite adventures too. I miss it horribly. I don't know what I was thinking when I left. I'm in a low desert now. The Valley of The Sun, Phoenix. smh WHAT was I thinking?
Jeff what a fantastic vlog you continually impress me ! History lessons abound TY SO MUCH ! So sad about Jenny and you standing right where Mark Twain did ! Crazy
I grew up right across the street from Lone Hill cemetery, it use to be over run with squirrels, and they would undermine many of the graves and headstones causing lots of damage. My brothers and I would hunt squirrels there every chance we had. The public works and local sheriffs knew we would be over there being as responsible as we could be we wiped out many of the squirrels as we could. Neat to see it many years later in decent condition and not a single squirrel in your video. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Mark Twain was an atheist....wondering if the death of Jennie contributed to that. Nice to see some blue sky and sunshine. Haven't seen that much this year due to wildfires. I enjoyed the video!
It is so cool to see another Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) house. I have been to his Connecticut house a few times. The Connecticut house has a room with a pool table and fancy chairs, they said it was his thinking room. He would play pool to help himself think. Sadly, both his Connecticut house and this house had tragedy. His daughter died when he lived in the Connecticut house. It was one of the reasons Sam moved out.
Oh thank you! We appreciate it! I will definitely let Sarah know what you said. I think she's delightful too! Let us know if you have ideas for future episodes! Please become one of our subscribers! Thanks, Jeff
Just recently found your channel and I'm loving it. Born and raised in Reno, I spent much of my childhood exploring all the wonderful placed you're showing...I'm a Western history geek... btw my great great grandmother is buried in Lone Mountain Cemetery...cool place to explore. I was there last summer (2019) and saw a mule deer too. She was nibbling on the vegetables in the yard of the house by the office...maybe it's the same girl! 😁 Look forward to more great content!!
Welcome aboard! I'm glad you found our channel and that you're enjoying our videos! I do believe we may have seen the same deer! Thanks very much for commenting!
Thank you once again for another great video- I just found it today. I was really interested in this one more than some others because I have family in Carson City- the town and area truly has home great history. If you haven't done so already, next time you are there check out the area around the governor's mansion- beautiful old homes, well preserved.
Cool post. Mr. "Kit" Carson was/is one of the most important historical figures of westward-expanding United States. He is often brushed over as someone with a famous/recognizable name, but not many people know what he did get become famous. He was a true frontier bad-ass, survivalist, and explorer that sadly took his own life as he entered into his later years. A truly great American figure.
I watch you go through the cemeteries and think none of them knew that they would die on that day. I’m 65 while I don’t want to die my biggest fear are what the people I care for and my pets might go through it scares me but Thankyou I enjoy your channel
I've been in the Carson City area since 86' and never walked that Cemetery. Day before my wife passed away, we were headed to Walmart and past that cemetery, and my wife was intently looking at the head stones. I had no idea she would be gone at only 42 from cancer.
Wow thanks for your touching comment. Seven years ago I lost my wife of 31 years to leukemia. Life is short. We have to make each day count. God bless you.
@@jbenziggy Same Brother, my wife passed Feb 3rd 2013 and our daughter was only 12 at the time and we both seen her pass. My life hasn't been right since, my daughter went on to the Air Force, Married and expecting a baby girl soon. My wifes name was Gloria, the grandbaby will be Gloriana to honor my wife and daughters mama. God Bless and sorry for your loss 🙏
Sarah is a Starr now? Great! My Dad and I had family friends that owned an 800 acre ranch that grew Sugar Beets if I remember correctly back around 1960.
You’re killing me, LaurelRuth. Lol. We already did a video on that. Check out our video list! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rOKLDtrhUTo.html
By all accounts I've read, Sam absolutely adored his niece Jennie, and her death hurt him so that he left Nevada only 3 months after she died. In his great book ROUGHING IT (1871) centered on his adventures around the wild frontier of Nevada Territory and Virginia City, Sam tells the tale of a hilarious duel as the reason for his departure from the rambunctious Virginia City and Nevada Territory he loved so much. Although the "duel" fits the wild frontier image Sam paints so well in ROUGHING IT, it has always rang a bit hollow to me as THE reason Sam left Nevada. Jennie resonates as THE reason Sam left; her fresh constant memory would have been too painful for him to deal with every day.
There’s a story I heard in Virginia City that Sam Clemens kept a bar bill on a chalk board. He’d go in with a friend and order two drink telling the barkeep to “mark twain” to update his tab. Food story!
Jeff ... thanks for the marketing opportunity for my book which you quoted from and also those metal signs were written from. I am the author of a walking tour booklet of Lone Mountain Cemetery and of course, the book entitled Cemeteries of Carson City and Carson Valley. Nice job ... Cindy Southerland, Carson City, NV, August 2019
cindy southerland fantastic! Thanks! It was a fun experience! I love that cemetery! I hope you will subscribe! I have more shows coming up about Carson City and Virginia City!
Cindy - My great grandfather Frederick Thomas Mossford was a monumental mason from England who was working in Carson City in 1896 when my grandmother was born. They were in Reno in 1898 when my great uncle was born - Have you ever come across the name Mossford on the back of a headstone? I am curious about their 5 years in the USA
I was outside the Nixon Funeral in Yorba Linda (I lived a couple of miles away). I drove down there to get a glimpse of the presidents. They stopped traffic at the exact time when I was in front. I think Clinton, Carter and Bush 1 were inside.
The brother of Charles Dickens is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago along with Augustus Dickens girlfriend and their children. None of the kids made it out of their infancy.
After the discovery of the Comstock Lode Nevada was separated from Utah Territory and made a separate territory, 1861-64. In 1864 the State of Nevada was related. The silver and gold of Nevada and California helped the Union pay for the civil war.
Love Carson City and I always will. Use to volunteer at the Nevada State Railroad Museum on the south end of town. If I could afford it I'd move there to be close to the museum.
I lived in Carson for over 50 years and moved out in 2019 due to the low class and abundance of people moving there. I moved to another town in Nevada and still consider Carson City my home.
Wow another wonderful Jeff! I just discovered your channel last week (June2024) and love watching every night! ❤ I've got a lot of catching up to do, I see.... and I'm going to enjoy every minute! (Gee... Carson City looks very peaceful.. I don't see hundreds of cars rushing down every street)
