Is this the best small fishing boat? It is the best boat for me. Orkney Boats have been making sturdy working boats for many many years. If you're looking for a capable small fishing boat then the Orkney Coastliner 14 should be very high on your list. The boat was also known as the Orkney 440 for a few years but the current Orkney catalogue has reverted back to Coastliner. It has been in production over thirty years and that’s down to it being a cracking design that just works.
I'll show you around my Coastliner and explain my rationale for purchasing the boat. Ease of towing, launching and retrieving single handed and the ability to keep the boat in a single garage are a real bonus. Despite her 14 foot length she's a very capable inshore fishing boat. As with any boat regardless of size only go out in suitable conditions which are forecast to continue to be suitable all the time you are out.
Do take a look at some of my fishing videos to get an understanding of what these capable little boats can do. So far I've not caught anything that means "I'm going to need a bigger boat!" But I live in hope 😄.
I've not been sponsored by Orkney Boats to sing their praises. This is just my honest opinion.
Hope you enjoy the look around the boat. Of course those with deeper pockets may look elsewhere but don't be too quick to dismiss the capabilities of these great little boats.
Tight lines from me and a tail wag from Dee.

Great video ! Very inspiring , a “revenge of common citizen” . Or , “Aquaholic in spite” . Great little boat , perfectly equiped . Beeing non-englishman , I am always fascinated with UK rules of safety on board , and equipment . I know some 40ft yachts on Med, dos not have even half of your gear ! My small suggestions : watertight boxes for spares , papers - try fridge boxes , Curver or simmilar , but with some latches .And , emergency torch: there are nice torches , with pendulum charger . No need for batteries. I also like your COTS approach . Sometime you can find very good piece of gear on regular hardware store. I know the guy who make a numver of bushings, brackets , pads from- kitchen cutting board !

Hi, thanks for the comments. You would be amazed by the lack of any regulations for boating in the UK. Firstly, you don't need any training or licence to buy a boat and head out to sea - really. Second, there are recommendations on what to carry but no rules. Third, no need to register the boat or carry any papers or have insurance. Amazing really as much of the UK is highly regulated. I take the approach if I'm going to head out to sea then I should be prepared and be able to rescue myself. Why should anyone else risk their life to come and get me. We are lucky to have a wonderful RNLI and Coastguards. I support them - they are heros. Thanks for the suggestions on further gear to carry and yes it doesn't have to come with 'Marine' price tag, regular stores often work fine. Phil.

Very nice rig.. I always wanted an warrior or oarkney . .here in the USA . People buy an 80000usd boat to catch 10 dollar fish. Lol.. I am a kayak fisherman but just ordered a whaly 370.. looking forward to watching your progress

Thanks for watching and commenting. Ha ha yes some folks over here buy huge boats - each to their own I suppose. The Whaley 370 looks a great boat - easy maintenance and solid. A 20hp should get that up to speed easily 👍

Fine Business! I am 5 minuites from the launch ramp.Struggling with big expensive to run truck for towing.I did not choose the larger boat I have now but it was given to me by a neighbour.I did a lot of rot repair to it to get it goung again. The boat you have there is easily towed.We trust your shoulder is mending.Mine is too! CHEERS from CANADA!

Hi phil, i picked up my 440 on Wednesday in Sunderland and got her back up to Lossiemouth so im now a very proud coastliner owner:). First question of many coming right up… see inside the hull is there meant to be water? Iv taken all the bungs out and tipped it bow right up, but theres water between the hull somewhere that cant escape, and its not a small amount its in there sloshing about🤷🏼‍♂️, was wondering if you might of experienced this also…? Any advice would be muchly welcome cause i cant get it out, was maybe thinging it could be ballast maybe….
@anotherangleUK
@anotherangleUK 4 месяца назад
Hi, great you have your Coastliner. There isn't any water balast. There is a void down the keel. If you look in the front locker you can see it at the front. There's a bung in the rear fuel locker. I think the idea is that it drains any water that gets into the front locker - often from a bad seal on the little pipe from the anchor well. If you've tipped the bows up it should drain out into fuel tank locker and then out though the transom bung. Hope that makes sense. The other thing that maybe happening are the screws in the keel band can sometimes need re sealing. Those screws also head up into that same keel void. My other thought would be the two buoyancy tanks under the front seats. Don't know if you can access them. Bit drastic but make a small pilot hole with a drill to see if water comes out?

Hi mate the boats looking ace, im just away to go down the road your on, literally from scratch… my question is where did you get the hatch cover for the front cubby?
@anotherangleUK
@anotherangleUK 9 месяцев назад
Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. The front locker hatch came from F10 Marine (online). The nearest size is 600 x 250 mm. A small amount of cutting was required to enlarge the access hole in the boat. I think it looks a lot better and is a little more secure as the latches have locks. Hope you refurbishment goes well and you have many happy hours out on the water. Stay safe. Phil

Great video! Always good to see a Coastliner. Another advantage of not having the boat on a mooring is that the fittings and accessories are more secure. I used to find it very tedious having to cart the battery and the fish finder to and from the boat. As I’m never going to use the boat at sea, I wouldn’t need quite as much in the way of electronics and lights. Two questions, if I may. Who makes the swivel seats, and where did you get the waterproof hatch cover that you have fitted to the opening in the front? Our Orkney is at least 35 years old, and sadly the hull doesn’t look as bright and shiny as yours. It has a distinctly chalky look to it, but I’m fearful that if I rub it down much more, I’ll have no gel coat left! Anyway, thoroughly enjoyable videos, and you have a new subscriber Anyway,
@anotherangleUK
@anotherangleUK 11 месяцев назад
Hi James, glad to have you aboard the channel. Although I have fitted navigation lights they are there for a 'just in case' situation of fog etc rather than setting out in the dark. As for the gel coat, it's thicker than you imagine. I had to use several grades of fine wet and dry sand paper to remove deep scratches. Then a final polish up to get the shine back. Reel Time did look a bit neglected when I bought her - a chalky red colour. Being kept in a garage at home makes all these jobs so much easier. The front locker hatch was bought from F10 Marine (online). The nearest size is 600 x 250mm. A small amount of cutting was required to enlarge the access hole in the boat. I think it looks so much better and a little more secure as the latches have locks. The swivel seats seem to be available under several different names / brands. I can't recall where I purchased mine from, but a google brings up Marine Store Chandlery - Talamex folding seat. I also managed to source some stainless steel swivels again from somewhere online. Hope this helps, Phil. PS what colour is your hull?
@jamesrussell7775
@jamesrussell7775 11 месяцев назад
Hello, and thanks for such a quick and comprehensive reply. Our Orkney also has a red hull, though pink might be a better description at the moment! It’s a great little boat, second hand as a present for my 40th birthday. The original owner was based near Montrose, and used it offshore, but I only use it on Loch Earn. My wife and I took one look, and we were captivated by it. An instant purchase. I’m thoroughly enjoying watching you videos. You certainly have catholic tastes when it comes to fishing! Kind regards, James @@anotherangleUK

Mine was a pre retirement present. I don't think Orkney made many Coastliners (or other models) with red gel coat. I'm interested in all types of fishing, however it's shame my expertise doesn't match my enthusiasm 😂

What is the height of the vessel on the trailer, if you don’t mind me asking? I’m trying to see if it will clear the carport. Thanks!

Thanks for the comments. Ours is a standard garage door. I’ll take some measurements when I’m back home. Guess a standard door is 6’ 6”. The nav light and vhf aerial just clear it.

My Coastliner on trailer is 6' 2" to top of cuddy roof. I need extra for my nav light and VHF aerial. You could wind the jockey wheel down to get the cuddy lower. Hope this helps.

Hi, the cover came with the boat and it maybe original? I've replaces the bungle chords and had a repair done to a hole. I'd contact either Orkney or one of the online cover companies as they may well have a pattern.

Thanks for commenting. They took the old two stroke as a part exchange which covered the fitting costs plus the new steering cables, remotes and the electric cables. Came to just over £3k in the end. Obviously price will have gone up since then.
