Now for decades, Orkney has been a testing ground for energy innovation - a place that generates around 120 percent of its electricity needs through renewables.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
So trials on the islands have provided useful lessons in the battle to decarbonise the UK's power systems.
We’ve been to the Scottish archipelago to see what our green energy future could look like.

Does anybody else feel like the hydrogen guy is talking nonsense? He's got to expend a tonne of energy to produce the hydrocarbon 'synthetic fuel' but that energy could surely be going to people and battery powered cars? Lots of countries are already working on all-electric planes, too, and battery tech is getting better every year so why create a merry-go-round for a product that takes a lot of energy to create, requires a lot more to store *safely*, and if it isn't handled properly explodes?
@JonathanPorterfield

Orkney makes TOO MUCH ELECTRIC from renewables and we have to turn off turbines , so using this excess power makes sence to store this energy in hydrogen. It depends on what the savings are spent on , a point entirely missed by those using saving money as a prompt and not stopping emissions as the goal . I always have a question for those with solar panels in northern locations. (Jonathan) In winter you get less than 10% output…just when you need it most. So an alternative is required, but as solar is so cheap, the alternative only gets used for a short period of time, making it highly expensive. So, is it not better to invest in the alternatives and drop solar, making the alternatives economical.

The figure is the metal (chemical)heat battery eg a metal like magnesium can be burned in carbon dioxide to produce Magnesium Oxide and black carbon, surplus electricity is then used to remake magnesium metal so the fuel is Magnesium Metal and CO2 the output is magnesium oxide and carbon . This is just an example to explore a possibility

there plan to ditch hydrogen is so short sighted, hydrogen generation is a key factor for trucks, air, heating using a populous that was predominantly diesel to begin with it was obvious that Orkney would clearly go to electric only for all there services since its a test bed for technology trials with a constant surplus, but for Britain as a whole, as the saying is don't put your eggs in one basket, over 30% of the rail network is still non electrified, and may never be electrified because of the cost to change can't be justified to numbers. as the individual said using decarbonisation to generate fuel will be hard to justify because it cost 5 times more to generate, its not cost effective for a large proportion of trucking to convert, dumpers, cranes, automotive relay, dump trucks, its far more convenient to dedicate a rest stop and add hydrogen refilling, something that truckers have been demanding for a number of years so they can shower, use a laundry eat, and sleep with there loads protected by police/security. biofuels may make an attempt but to long hall hydrogen is still more economical than battery period, whist ev may have taken over local bus routes, hydrogen is still preferred method for coches and tours, and no one is talking about the weight issue, already metal hawlage trucks can hit 69 tonns, and drive often 500 miles per tank, our roads simply cannot take another 40 tons on top, yet with a dedicated hydrogen truck the weight penalty is only around 12 tonns, with mayers delibratly making it harder for truck deliverys by adding more tolls and CC charges for deliverys, customers will be forced to pay the bills that pushes up inflation, the small businesses can't obsorb these costs and shut down or try to relocate out of town if viable, but many can't, GAS must still flow, and hydrogen has to be a part of it, not only to cut imports, but also be a renewable source for national energy independence, labours policy leaves everyone at risk of the market prices as well as world conficts, there plans will cost us SIGNIFICANLY more to generate, no one is talking about the mulitimillion pound decommissioning cost, or the 70% uk housing NOT ready to get a cop 4.6 rating, where costs with the increased cap will be viable, there is no plan to increase winter stocks of gases , something the regulator has recommended, that would cut winter hikes, and ensure both grid and production can continue in a cost effective manor, with the regulator increasing the cap the average 4 bed 4 person family willbe looking at over 2700 on duel fuel,

And he still says "decarbonise" at the end. Like the man says at 2:41, we don't need to do it, if the carbon is obtained renewably from the atmosphere - to where it returns. Everything can be NetZero if we 'recarbonise' 'retrochemicals'. Decarbonisation has always been a red herring.
@mike_w-tw6jd

lowering the earth's CO2 level seems impossible
@trs4u
@trs4u 20 дней назад
@@mike_w-tw6jd "decarbonise" usually refers to products and activities, so it's taking carbon *chemistry* away. That doesn't itself "lower the CO2 level", it's intended to attack consumer activities that have indirectly caused Climate Change. The direct cause of CC is exhuming fossil carbon from geological deposits. If one accepts that humans have raised atmospheric CO2, one must rationally accept we can lower it? Nobody's saying it will be quite so easy!
@smc812
@smc812 20 дней назад
Well, people keep saying Net Zero which is the right term. The H2 guy was right, there will be specific uses where the cost premium of synthetic fuels or H2 is the only carbon neutral option, however this won’t be road transport or home heating, the two biggest sources of co2 in the UK.
@trs4u
@trs4u 20 дней назад
@@smc812 the size of that "cost premium" is directly related to how many people pay it, by economies of scale. 'Hiding' it in fractional consumption from the gas main while it's 'early days' seems ideal? Methane doesn't have the 'matched application' chicken-egg obstacle of other NZ solutions.
@smc812
@smc812 20 дней назад
@@trs4u When people say H2 is more expensive they are already factoring in the economies of scale that could be possible. Fundamentally to make H2 from water needs more power to go in than can come out by about 4-5x, and that down to Physics and Chemistry not scale. It will always be less efficient and so less affordable than battery, but can still be viable where other constraints limit batteries. Using it for heating, however diluted in fossil fuels will always be more expensive than heat pumps.

I live in Southern Spain and spent about €12,000 on a small PV system (3.3Kw of panels and 8KwH battery pack, plus a solar water heater system) - for nine months of the year I only pay the standing charges (€25 a month). And produce an annual surplus of about 1,000 - 1,200 KwH. The solar water heater reduces my demand for electricity (the insulated tank holds about 300lt, which I find is enough for three days or so if we have no sun - which is rare where I live - at which point I just run the electric element overnight, but I probably need to do that maybe half a dozen times a year) which makes a huge difference to the size of the PV system I need. To the point where I think that if you live in a sunny country they should mandatory. Essentially the panels power the house first, and then any surplus refills the battery, and when that is full feeds into the Grid during the afternoon. in 2023 I consumed 3.58MwH of electricity, of which 253KwH was from the Grid. The system produced a surplus of 1.59MwH over the year. Here in Spain in 2023 the average price of electricity was about 30c per KwH, and (theoretically) the payment price here for my surplus is only 6c per KwH. There are grants of up to 45% of the cost available now for people to install PV systems but they weren't available when I installed the system (and it's Spain so they're complicated to comply with, and slow to actually give you the money). In Spain grants are regarded as taxable income by the authorities so the actual amount you will receive will be reduced. As for the carbon footprint - I've seen reports that say that the PV panels themselves repay their carbon footprint in about a year if the panels are made locally or (more likely) 18 months or so if they are imported from China due to the additional CO2 from shipping them. I can't think that the solar water heater system has much of a footprint - there's actually nothing complex about it at all. So it's just the battery that would add a few years to the payback time. My system tells me that my home production saved about 1.44 tonnes of CO2 (versus the amount produced if I had bought the electricity from the Spanish Grid) in 2023. I've had the system for about four years now and it's been very reliable after some initial teething problems (the inverter is German, designed for stable German voltages - it struggled with the dodgy rural Spanish variable supply and it took my installer and the maker a lot of trial and error to get it to work okay).

No it won’t. Trust me. I bought solar panels that generates more power than I use. After a few years with near 0 bills, my expenses are almost back to normal. People might see Denmark as a green eco country but it is only as long as it doesn’t benefit the public. All my savings are gone. I have to pay feed in tariffs. The transmission tariffs are also though the roof, sometimes 4x the kWh price between 17:00 and 21:00 when you get home from work and need to use electricity. Get paid market price for my solar, which is zero today. Sometimes I even have to pay to send power back to the grid. It is a scam. The only people who benefits are the big companies with lobbyists. They still get the promised price for selling their electricity. We are getting screwed and no one cares.

Chanel 4 is lying as usual. Ofgem's approved Standing charge for Electricity and Gas is over £12 each a month (EACH!). i.e. just being connected to Gas and Electricity grids cost you £25 a month! Why Chanel 4 always lies?
@MrPurle
@MrPurle 21 день назад
the guy was on octopus - they take all of your usage/charges and then offset what you generate- he generated enough to not pay the standing charge. I've not paid for electricity or gas since April... I export enough to pay both bills, and also build credit to cover the winter months.

@MrPurle Is Octopus is charity? No! Octopus (as the name suggests) is a commercial business that swallow you for its profit. Can you produce cheaper electricity than commercial windmills that run 24 by 7 and Octopus buys electricity from? No, because solar energy is far more expensive than windmills, and Solar energy production is only limited to sunny days!

Electric vehicles/solutions are weather dependant. For example, the average EV takes 15 to 20 hours to charge when the temperature drops below 10 celsius, charging at a pathetic 10 amps. You can see people in London driving EV's around in their pyjamas desperately looking for a charging station because the temperature as dropped significantly causing charging seizure, the grid can't cope and so on.. These facts have caused people to turn towards HEV's. Any hybrid solution causes costs to spiral because it means you have additional systems that need to be serviced. People are not making sufficient progress on the road to utilise the electrical system they've already paid for. The Orkney tidal power system currently can only support 0.00007% of UK homes. It has adverse effect on the wild life. Maintenance can only occur at tide slack. The area is littered with failed experiments. It's ultimately expensive both in the short and long term. Making people poorer.

@mezhkolape
@mezhkolape 20 дней назад
@michaela564 The question is what a green future might look like. I am mentioning a vital aspect that needs to be considered: taxes. As we shift to green alternatives, where is the government going to make up for the taxes it loses from taxing carbon rich sources? Your energy bill is NOT going to decrease. This opens the doors for new taxes to be introduced. Knowing politicians, they will over tax, and your energy bill will be higher than it is now.

@michaela564 of course you don't see it as related. It's not like the video is talking about alternative energy sources and how little he paid for his energy bill at the start of the video. How low is your IQ? It is seriously people like you who plow full steam ahead without fully considering an issue, then cry and whine because of the position you find yourself in. What is worse, other people have to suffer because of your ignorance.

God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs for those who brought us to this situation. By Allah Almighty, I did not write this appeal out of distress and distress. No one has mercy on them and a holiday is returned. I have made a living, and now if one of us helps us with a kilo of flour, I swear to God, I am dying of hunger. My brother, I am an alien to God. Wait a few years until the multi hundred megawatt solar farms start pumping out more electricity than anyone can possibly imagine. There are solar farms in the pipeline that on their own can power nearly 200,000 homes. All of which can be done for less than 0.5% of the countries land at a competitive price.
