Orkney looks amazing from the air! During a recent visit to my home county, my friend and fellow aviator Tommy Sinclair kindly took me up for a trip in his Jabiru J430 aircraft. We toured around the Orkney mainland and checked out some of the sights including the Old Man O' Hoy, Flotta Oil Terminal, The Kitchener Memorial, Brough of Birsay, Balfour Castle, Cubby Roo's Castle, Kirkwall Harbour and Deerness before landing back on Runway 24 at Lamb Holm. It was a beautiful clear day and I loved flying in the Jab and chatting to Tommy.

What a beautiful scenic flight, you had an interesting childhood for sure. A bit rainy in those areas tho so the sun was a rarity. When I lived in Wales I saw plenty of rain too, and went through a few very old castles too. I took a couple mexican guys for a ride one morning and told them we were going to see a castle. When I pulled in to park they looked at me all confused and I said whats the problem? They said in Spanish that castle meant cheese so they thought we were going to see some cheese......lol true story!!!

Very nice bet you get plenty good crosswinds on that strip. All I could think of was you game flying over that water with a JABBY ENGINE maybe they better over there where as it’s cooler

Yeah, plenty of wind in Orkney. I know the pilot maintains his aircraft very carefully so I was very confident flying in the Jab. Thanks for watching.

A friend of mine who is a Commercial helicopter pilot and has a Jabaru which I have been very fortunate to get several flights in.. I may be mistaken but I think he bought it from somebody in the Northern Islands wonder if it was Tommys

Hi Rory, not seen you since 2003 when we landed by boat on Auskerry to look for Oxford that crashed there in the war for the book I was working on Lost to the Isles. Rory , as you said in your closing comment , that was “ fabulous “. What a character Tommy is , the perfect flying companion . As a ex pat Brit living now in SE Australia and flying Jabiru aircraft , there were more than a few parallels with my life . I’d love to experience the wonders of Orkney from the air like that , what a brilliant video and one to tug at my heart strings . Love every second of it .

Great viewing Rory. I also lived in Orkney when I was growing up and spent many a weekend walking round Hoy and everywhere come to think of it. We also fly microlights but are based in the North East. My wife and I are the people who organise “Fly The Tyne”. Great work spreading the word. Regards

I agree, Rory, that was fabulous - great tour! Orkney is a long way from Canada's Yukon where I live, but there's an extremely strong historical connection through the Hudson's Bay Company fur traders, and I really want to get over for a look and to visit friends. It will take a month to see everything I want to see there, though - and an aerial tour is now a must. Thanks.

Trips like that is what it is all about. A member at my club has a Jabiru hangered. Was that one a microlight? The weight and performance figures mentioned by Tommy suggest it is a GA aircraft.
