A seven minute time lapse showing the complete build of my Orrery.
I designed and built this Orrery over the course of ten months. An Orrery is a working model of the motion of planets through our solar system.
Detailed videos of the entire build are available at www.zeamon.com and here on my KenToonz channel.
Plans for the Orrery are detailed in this video: • Zeamon Orrery Plans
The engraving is done with a Drag Diamond Engraver.
The model is one of a kind and NOT FOR SALE.
Soundtrack performed by Hi-Way 13

@KenToonz - forget those nay-sayers spouting crap about what's handcrafted. by their silly notions, handcrafted would suggest not using tools but picking at materials with your fingernails :P your hands were behind the tools, whether your hand grips the tool directly shaping the material, or instructs a computer that controls a machine that shapes the material. in my eyes, a computer is as much a tool as a chisel. keep up the good work my good sir :)

Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! It amazes me that people can watch something like this being created and then fixate on one word engraved on the base.

Glad you liked it. I pretty much worked five days a week. Sometimes full days, others just a few hours. Since I had never made gears before, some of the time was spent figuring out how to do things.

The dying art of craftsmanship. I have been machining for 40 years and always love to see what other people are doing. Thank you for the fine work and the video. I can't begin to imagine how much one of those would sell for. Ten thumbs up. God bless.

WOW! I once cut a gear out of a 2" round by 3/16" thick piece of HMW nylon using a fine V shaped hand file. I cut 48 teeth to match a factory made gear already in place in the mechanism. It took me about 6 hours to cut the teeth and another 2 hours to clean up the teeth so they meshed well. Even if I had the tools you used I don't have the patience anymore. That is a beautiful mechanism you created.

Nice work. Lovely little CNC mill too. For the next one you might consider buying an involute gear cutter wheel. The gears you have made will rattle when they turn, but properly made involute gears wil engage and disengage smoothly. This cutter wheel is not expensive, and an off shore one will work well in brass. All the information you need is right here on RU-vid under "gear cutting".

Ken. Wonderful job creating this one off masterpiece. I don't think people realize what's entailed in doing this. CNC factories that are making thousands of like parts per day are a different story. They do not have to set up the machine for each small process which is very tedious and time consuming let alone the programming and watch full eyes as each part is being made. I think most get the idea that you throw a bunch of materials in a room with a CNC machine and Voila, the machine cuts the blanks, loads em into the machine and out comes all the parts in a neat little bin for you to assemble. How nice that would be but it's not reality. Don't listen to the nay sayers. WTF do they know. And to everyone who asks what one of these would cost...try at least a hundred thousand bucks in my opinion.. It's art
@KenToonz
@KenToonz 6 лет назад
Edgard, thanks for the kind words! You're right, the naysayers seem to believe that a CNC machine works like a 3D printer - you hand it a drawing and it makes the part. Although RU-vid has thousands of videos that take you step by step through the tedious process of setting up a single CNC part, the naysayers don't seem to watch those. If I were making thousands of Orrerys, the second one and any that follow wouldn't be hand crafted, but the first one - the prototype - regardless of the tools used, is.

Mr. Ken, I have been getting ready to take the plunge into getting the "stuff" do to projects similar in mechanical requirements, materials, and size. Your setup(s) in this video are probably more than adequate to accomplish my goals, if I can acquire the skills. I have no doubt I will be able to learn, as I have become proficient in a variety of hobbies and crafts. One thing I have learned along the way is the right tool can make the difference between a chore or enjoyment and a failure from an accomplishment. Being highly detail-oriented, I am beyond overwhelmed in the manner of selection and even personal builds of CNC equipment. I don't need a 4,5, or 6 axis machine. Hell, I'm doing it for fun, not a profession, and possibly to save lots of money on things I can't afford, but can build. Would you possibly be willing to share a detailed list of what you have. I found your list after searching your personal website. Is that it? If so, then I have a hell of a lot more to learn than I realized, but rest assured, I am still wanting to learn to do it! Thank you for any assistance you can provide and the work is VERY, very impressive. You should seriously considering selling your items!!!
@KenToonz
@KenToonz 6 лет назад
Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately, there is no such thing as 'a list' of what you will need - it depends on what you intend to make. What I did and what you need to do is join internet forums specific to the projects you have in mind and forums specific to the brand of tools you're interested in. There are many such forums and only there will you be able to get the specific answers you're looking for. I spent a lifetime acquiring my tools, buying new ones as I needed them for a specific project. Don't expect to have everything on day one (unless you buy someone else's shop). Start out with what you need to make your first part and grow from there. Good luck!
