Orthodox Christians confess to Priests? Why does this faith do this and for what purpose? The belief of the Eucharist changes mysteriously into the Body and Blood of Jesus. Listen to Deacon John of Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Salt Lake City, Utah explain the reasons. A great understanding will come from this interview. If there are any who would like to financially support our kickstarter account with Father Justin, that would be such a blessing. What reassurance! I was Protestant for decades. Everytime I asked for forgiveness I always felt some kind of doubt. But with Orthodox confession, I receive that blessed assurance that I have been and am forgiven and that God does indeed still love me. I go from the experience having something I never got in Protestantism.

That's because in confessing to the priest one is confessing, in repentance and humility, to the Church, and to the person appointed in the Church as the proper authority for confession, imo. Confession in the Church does what it is supposed to do, lifting the burden of sin and bringing joy of forgiveness instead.

As a Protestant studying these doctrines, I find that I love his responses. I have been considering in many ways the same things that he has been saying about the sacraments. I wish that (we) took confession more seriously, as well as the other sacraments. It pierces my heart having studied the ECF and seen the sacraments taken so lightly.

what is always missing in these "discussions" with the older, original christian churches is that they have a different understanding of what the church on earth is. The church, the communities of believers joined through baptism, is the visible Body of Christ. Christ has established a group of followers in which he has directly entrusted a sanctified priesthood. The church is a actual visible, identifiable, physical presence of the Body of Jesus Christ on earth.

From what I know this is the Orthodox Church Position (not mine) 1. The Confession is a Sacrament, a Holy Sacrament, founded by our God, Jesus Christ on the evening of the resurrection. 2. A Sacrament is not a symbolisation or an earthly thing. Is a service/process given by God that can only be carried out by a priest. 3. No priest no Sacrament, confessing in your room is fine but this can only be considered as a communication and not a replacement/substitute of the Sacrament of Confession 4. Sacraments are given by God, and they serve a purpose in a Devine / mysterious way which we cannot see or understand. For example the contact of a man with a woman, does always cause harm to the soul, this way of reproduction is not the original will of God. Is an after fall thing. In order for God to stop this harm, God established the Sacrament of marriage (ideally between two virgins, man and woman). Through this Sacrament the flesh contact is blessed and its harm is stopped. 5. Same like marriage, the Confession is a Sacrament. the Confession is not just telling your sins. What’s the point!? God already knows your sins and the degree of your repentance. You don’t even need to confess at your room if you think this way. The confession is a healing process accomplished by the intervention of God who speaks through the priest. Since God established it let’s leave it alone 6. Confessing in your room means that none knows what you did, all is kept in dark. The very fact that you humble yourself and confess to a priest means that light is thrown on your sins, this very fact is a key issue. Often times a sin stops only by being revealed/discovered 7. Confessing in your room leaves no room for guidance, this would throw us into a lot of demonic deception

Prior to this, the priest explained that confession is a sacrament and I'd have to be Orthodox to experience the full benefit. Is this why I continue to feel so weighed down by my sin? I'm so desperate to take on the yoke of Jesus because he promised that it was easy (Matthew 11:29-30), but I haven't felt that in almost two decades. 😭

This priest is saying two different things. First he says the person is confessing to a priest carrying the priesthood of Christ, forgiving the person on behalf of Christ. (That is a mediator). Then he goes on to say the priest is not acting as a mediator.

Hello there, Im very curious about confession in the Orthodox church. What is the usual way to start confessing to a priest in Orthodoxy? For example in Catholic church we approach the priest after after the priest makes the sign of the cross, we say "bless me Father for I have sinned" then we tell the priest how long its been since our last confession, then I usually say "and I accuse myself of all the following sins", then I start listing my sins. Also what is the normal way to end confession, for example after listing all sins, the normal ending is "for these sins and for all the sins of my past life especially those which I can not now remember I humbly ask pardon from God and penance and absolution from you Father". Any help would be appreciated especially from those in the Ukrainian orthodox church

The following is from my orthodox prayer book: (After you have taken account of your sins and searched your conscience, go to your spiritual father as you would go to God's dreadful and frightening Judgement, with fear and trembling, with humility and a broken heart. Kneel down before him, make the sign of the cross, cross your arms on your chest and say:) Bless me father, that I may confess all my sins! (And then say:) I, a sinner, confess to Almighty God, to His Most Pure Mother, to all the Saints, and to you, father, who represent God, that from my last confession (remember how long it has been since your last confession) I have sinned often and much, but I am especially guilty for the following: (Tell the priests your sins). For these and for all that I have done, I am heartily sorry, for I have angered God, Who is untold goodness and worthy to be loved above all things and in every way. I truly promise, with His help and mercy, that I will make my path straight, and I will no longer commit these sins, or others. This is from a Romanian Orthodox prayer book but they are all the same as we are the universal church. God bless!

I think is way too wired and wrong to frame the confession in predetermined words like forgive me father etc Sounds like acting! Confession is not a standard service as liturgy, yes they in liturgy is all predefined cause this is what needed to be done. Confession has a simple rule, unless something urgent you confess with repentance whenever your spiritual father or another priest (if you are away for example) is available You say your sins without any explanation or justification (so you can take all the blame upon you) and that’s it If you feel that need to say sorry God or whatever is fine say it if it comes naturally You can ask guidance too or the priest might give you guidance You keep strong the faith that is everything guided by God, the priest reads the prayer in the end and free to go trying not to sin again If you sin again keep confessing the same thing till your last breath if needed

I've confessed in a Greek and Russian Parish only. In either there is a prayer of the Priest, then we start listing our sins and the Priest listens. Then after we're done, the Priest absolves us under the stole. In the Greek tradition confession is more in depth (the Priest will converse pertaining to the sins and troubles listed) but less frequent and by appointment. It is face to face. Usually before Liturgy will confession be done in the Slavic traditions. We do so in sight of everyone but whisper to the Priest so no one hears. After, we kiss the Gospel and perhaps the Priest's hand and he then absolves us.

Note the deacon called the Eucharist a "mystery". It was mentioned that the Roman Catholic Church called the Eucharist a sacrament which is made a True Presence via transubstantiation. Note the Deacon said both Orthodoxy and Catholics believe the Body and Blood is Jesus Christ. Why did the deacon refuse to explain more thoroughly what the Eucharist is other than to quote scripture. Because the Orthodox churches actively discourage discussion and speculation of the sacraments and certain truths about who God is. In contrast, the Catholics do allow discussion of what the sacraments are and who God is. For this reason, the Catholic Church has a vast, extensive theology which orthodoxy does not. This is what Orthodoxy means. What was once agreed is the Truth of God and his works, there can be no discussion or alteration without an official gathering of the bishops of Orthodoxy. the last gathering of the Orthodox bishops to decide on matters of faith was over 1000 years ago. It has not changed in how it does things. The Orthodox Church will actively stifle change.

Roman Catholicism makes a lot of claims that it has guessed on. We choose not to guess on what we do not know. We have no need for an Ecumenical Council. No dogma to proclaim. Vatican II is all one needs to see to see why change isn't always good. The Roman Catholic church lost it's link to the Apostolic Faith completely after that council and started to when it finally schismed over 600 years ago.

Orthodoxy agrees, but like in Israel which was also a nation of kings and priests, Peter's words are drawn from the Pentateuch, there was ranking of priesthood, the high priests, the other priests who brought varius kinds of sacrifices and performed them, the laity were the lowest rung priests whose offerings were brought to the higher priest levels to be offered, and themselves constantly made offering of praise and thanksgiving and worship to God. Now the High Priest is Jesus, the veil of the Temple was torn,, so its ratcheted up, the next level down priesthood goes into the holy sanctuary, the lowest level the laity, go into the section only priests could originally, and the unbelievers unbaptized etc. can be where the laity were allowed in the old days.

We don't have any high priest except Christ in Orthodoxy. Icons are not idols as they are not worshiped. Iconoclasm is heresy. Sola Scriptura in all actuality depends on one taking the word of man over God by saying that one's conclusion is more correct than that of the Holy Apostles who learned from Christ God. Many claim to be led by the Holy Spirit but their beliefs contradict, so that has to be false. Many times Protestants take the word of those who made up their own interpretations and add on to them.

@ Be Anners: Icons are not images of false gods, as are idols. They represent what they depict and are not worshipped-they are venerated, respected. And the Holy Word is Jesus Christ-the Scriptures are ABOUT the Holy Word, recorded by His Church. One can worship the bible instead of Christ, which is what I think many Protestants do.

We as Calvinists don't believe eucharist is just a symbol. Christ is present in a special way, through His Spirit through faith. However the bread stays bread and the wine stays wine. I can understand why many American evangelicals (like Baptists) convert to the Orthodox church, especially because there is so much shallowness and confusion amongst American evangelicals. I myself love my brothers and sisters in the Orthodox communities. However Americans should be warned. What they experience in their western Orthodox communities is not the norm in countries like Greece, Serbia and Russia. There Orthodoxy is deeply involved in narrow nationalism, superstition and consists in many cases of nothing more than empty ritualism. Very little of the Gospel is found in many places, although there are off course some wonderful exceptions! I am so happy to have Jesus Christ as my sole Mediator and Highpriest… He is enough for me and I don’t miss relics, candles and incense!
@billzaferatos2256

Noordeman with all due respect, calvinist just like all Protestant churches have one thing in common. It's a watered-down version of the Catholic Church minus holy tradition. There are thousands of Protestant churches now that has separated from the Catholics and have no true continuity back to Pentecost but only back to the 1500s. Each and every one including (Calvinists) pick and choose which Catholic Doctrine they reject and which ones to keep. For example Original Sin being the reason to baptize infants. That's a Catholic falsehood but at the same time infant baptism can be traced back to the original Church and if you look at the church that's unchanged being the Orthodox you'll see that's not why they baptize babies. Calvinists took infant baptism from the early church tradition but reject holy tradition. Again an example of picking and choosing. Every denomination in existence came from the heresy of the Catholic Church and no one can blame the Protestants that left the Catholic church but we do blame them for holding Catholic beliefs and rejecting Orthodox Church because the Orthodox Church also rejected several things of the Catholic church and had been fighting with the Catholic Church literally since the 300s. Truth of the matter is Martin Luther and Calvin and the rest of these people just wanted to start their own church and now there are thousands of Protestant churches disagreeing with each other and the Catholic Church and include the Orthodox Church in this mess. Also out of Protestant Reformation we received the cult Christian churches like the Adventist and the Jehovah Witness. I do have a question, have calvinist remove the same books as the lutherans did they also avoid James and Hebrews in the New Testament? I ask because in James and Hebrews, these books disprove once saved always saved and also that works are necessary. What good is the gospel and the other books of the New Testament and the Old Testament if they're misinterpreted
@Tsumebleraar
@Tsumebleraar 6 лет назад
We have great respect for the whole Scripture, including James and Hebrews. I preach from both of them. You are greatly misinformed (I don't blame you for that) about Calvinist doctrine. However, I regard all people who put their only trust in Jesus alone as part of God's true church. (That would include many Roman Catholics and Orthodox!) This true faith will necessarily lead to good works. If not, it is a dead faith. We believe that faith in Christ alone is the foundation and root and good works the evidence and fruit. Luther and Calvin never wanted to establish a new church, the RC drove them out. God just has one church, everywhere where the Word is preached and truly believed. We don't pick and choose, we go back to Scripture!

I'd rather be Orthodox than a Calvinist or any other type of Protestant as I believe Protestantism is illogical and has thrown away great chunks of the Truth of Christ. There are countless cultural Protestants throughout the U.S. and Europe so please don't bring that nationalism nonsense to the table. There are many national "churches" under Protestantism. You attempt to discredit our Faith in a very dishonest way. Calling us shallow even.. To me low church Protestantism feels empty and lacking in all ways.

Christ is our Mediator as He united us to the Father through His incarnation, baptism, crucifixion, death, and resurrection. Christ appointed the Apostles to hear confessions, to forgive or not in the Bible. Confession is frequently talked about in the Bible to be done among the congregation. The Priest represents the congregation when we confess and is a witness to the confession to Christ God. Repentance means to turn away from something. You must turn away from whatever it is that is sinful to have repented fully.

I went to Catholic church for around 1 year. Most of the people do not read the Bible for themselves. The choirs are very pretty and have good music as in most churches.

And not just read Bible and jumping in during the songs that are played in most protestant's meetings....

@@user-lt8gj4cl9f I've observed to a significant extent that many or most Catholics do not read the scriptures for themselves. They rely on the Mass and the little scripture reading on a Sunday the priest gives. Every denomination disseminates the Word of God to any extent. I've attended a independent fundamentalist Baptist Church for around 6 months, and it turns out they had false teaching also. There are about 4 or 5 Baptists denominations. Maybe I'm wrong of being critical of people's religions, because every person has a freewill to join where they feel comfortable or not attend at all. I don't want to be so naive as to believe there isn't plenty of religious institutions in the world that are primarily operating not for Jesus and for the Kingdom of God, but for themselves. Jesus said - No man can come to me except my Father draw him.

@@blairkenneth7739 I have to disagree, I am an orthodox Christian and I have been reading Bible for every single day... so saying that every catholic or orthodox does not read the Bible is not correct. No, no, no! Without the priest, man cannot be fully reconciled to God, because he has to also be reconciled to the church through the priest? No matter how they try to spin it, if the priest has the "authority" to come between the sinner and Jesus Christ, the Priest then becomes the mediator between God and man!

This is so unbiblical. Confess to each other the Bible says. No different from Roman Catholicism. Why they even split up is the real mystery. James 5:16New International Version (NIV) 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Besides each Christian is a priest through Christ. 1 Peter 2:5Easy-to-Read Version (ERV) 5 You also are like living stones, and God is using you to build a spiritual house.[a] You are to serve God in this house as holy priests, offering him spiritual sacrifices that he will accept because of Jesus Christ. Their prayer they use even says forgiveness is of the Lord. Yet by the willing participation of a Believer they seek to exercise accountability and reconciliation with the church as a fellow believer who has been given the charge of the Apostolic commission of John 20. How is that unbiblical?

The bread of life discourse in John 6 starts at v26. You can't ignore the context and make it about communion. The people seeking him were not seeking Jesus for the right reasons. They were seeking more bread. Jesus had just fed the 5000. John 6:26-29 Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.” Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” So he tells them to work for the food which endures to eternal life. And that the work of God is to *believe* in him who he has sent. Immediately they show they don't believe as they want a sign. John 6:30-31 So they said to Him, “What then do You do for a sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’” Next Jesus corrects then and says God gave them the bread and identifies himself as the bread from heaven in v33 John 6:32-33 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” Jesus now even more clearly identifies himself as this bread. At the same time he says those who *come will never hunger* and those who *believe will never thirst* Jesus has already established what eating and drinking mean. Coming and believing! John 6:35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. Jesus then explains why they aren't believing John 6:36-37 But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. So immediately after saying they don't believe he discusses that all that the Father gives him will come to him. Why would he say this right after? He is explaining their unbelief. He continues John 6:38-40 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” Who will have eternal life and be raised up on the last day? *Those who believe.* We will see this same phrase later. Next they grumble over his words. Let's see why. John 6:41-42 Therefore the Jews were grumbling about Him, because He said, “I am the bread that came down out of heaven.” They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does He now say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?” Are they grumbling because he is telling them to literally eat his flesh? No. They don't believe that he is come from heaven. They don't believe. Jesus once again says why they don't believe. John 6:43-45 Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. Why can't they come? The Father has not drawn them. Notice he is referring back to v37-40. Not the last time we will see this. Next we see again believing and eternal life John 6:47 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life. So after saying believing is eternal life he then calls himself the bread of life and that if you eat of him you will never die. John 6:48-50 I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. So after saying believing is eternal life does he suddenly switch to talking about communion in verse 50? Could it be that eating of this bread means believing? The context certainly indicates so. Next we see it again saying he who eats this bread will live forever. Sounds like eternal life which was just said to be received by believing. John 6:51 I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.” Next we see them grumbling again and not understanding John 6:52-53 Then the Jews began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. Pay close attention to what Jesus says next John 6:54 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. Where have we seen these words before? Back in verse 40 John 6:40 For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” In v54 who will he raise up on the last day? Those who eat his flesh and drink his blood. In v40 who will he raise up on the last day? Those who believe? Could it possibly be that eating and drinking mean believing???? He continues speaking of himself as the bread of life John 6:55-58 For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever.” Given the context is this really talking about communion? Next there is more grumbling John 6:60-61 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this said, “This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?” But Jesus, conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble? There next verse I think makes it clear that the grumbling here has once again to do with believing that Jesus came down from heaven. Because Jesus discussed his ascension in response John 6:62 What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before? He then describes his words as spiritual and that the spirit gives life John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. And we again see that there are some who are unbelieving John 6:64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. Jesus once again explains why they can't come John 6:65-66 And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.” As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. So according to v66 as a result of what did his disciples withdraw from him? The answer is v65. Jesus was saying to them why they couldn't believe. Jesus already established coming and believing satiates hungering and thirsting in v35. You can't ignore this context and start reading at the end of the discourse. He says those who believe he will raise up on the last day and uses the same language of those who eat his flesh. We see repeatedly eternal life connected to believing. That's what John 6 is about. Believing on the one who has come down from heaven. You don't get communion out of it unless you ignore the context.

Eric Bean Starting around 7:50 in the video they stay discussing John 6. Around 8:08 he says Jesus gave an entire discourse on the Eucharist in reference to John 6. The entire point of my post of that Jesus is not speaking about the Eucharist or literally eating his flesh. You just told me what the Orthodox believe.

Eric Bean I never said anything about Sola Fide. Sure it's clear from the verses I quoted, but I wasnt even discussing that. I'm glad that you recognize that it can be found in John 6. Why do you reject what Jesus taught and what the apostles believed? And you base your understanding of the Eucharist on the Lord's prayer where he is clearly taking about actual bread? And then misquote Corinthians where it says 1 Corinthians 11:24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; *do this in remembrance of Me.” * Why would you drop the end of the citation off? Does it not support your position? I'm basing my beliefs on the word of God. It is on that alone I stand. Not on the traditions of men.
@benjaminw309
@benjaminw309 7 лет назад
Eric Bean so it is your position that Jesus was talking about the Eucharist in Lords prayer long before he even introduced the concept? The word you are using was coined by Jerome and he translated it differently elsewhere. We also find the word in a 5th century shopping list next to grocery items. Was that shopping list referring to the Eucharist too? You are putting far too much weight on a word. Just because it was misused by some in the early church does not mean they were correct. If you study the church fathers you will find they disagree on many things. We need to be our beliefs on the scripture. That is the sole infallible rule of faith.
@benjaminw309
@benjaminw309 7 лет назад
Eric Bean I'm not sure about Chrysostom. My point on citing him was in reference to your point on the Lord's prayer. Many of the early church fathers taught some sort of real presence but they differed in how they viewed it. I think many people read things where they quote the scripture or use the same language to describe the Eucharist and assume the fathers had their same beliefs. Or they they agreed when they used similar language. The truth is their beliefs differed. Here's an interesting quote from Tertullian “Having taken the bread and given it to His disciples, Jesus made it His own body, by saying, ‘This is My body,’ *that is, the symbol of My body. There could not have been a symbol, however, unless there was first a true body*. An empty thing or phantom is incapable of a symbol. He likewise, when mentioning the cup and making the new covenant to be sealed ‘in His blood,’ affirms the reality of His body. For no blood can belong to a body that is not a body of flesh” (Against Marcion, 4.40). In arguing against Docetism(believing that Jesus only appeared to be flesh but wasn't actually), Tertullian clearly calls Christ's words symbolic. His point is that the bread can't be a symbol of Christ body if Christ didn't have a body. Ignatius on arguing against Docetism in his letter to Smyrna is frequently misquoted in support of the real presence when he makes a similar argument. The Docetics wouldn't take the Eucharist because they denied Christ has a real body. Ignatius used this as a way to identify Docetics. I have a Catholic friend who became quite mistrusting of Catholic apologists when I showed him the entire context. Be careful how you read the church fathers. Don't read them anachronistically.
@benjaminw309
@benjaminw309 7 лет назад
Eric Bean Tertullian's meaning is quite clear from the context. Redefining his words nearly 2000 years later is anachronism. If he viewed it as more than a symbol his argument would make much more sense to state it differently than he did given what he was arguing about. Docetics believed Jesus didn't have a real body. That He was just a phantom. Why would Tertullian tell someone like this the bread is just a symbol? If you study the early church fathers in an unbiased way you will find that it's not a clean and pretty package that the Catholic or Orthodox apologists claim it to be. You don't have the faith of the early church. You have the faith of the 8-9th century church.

brettjones42 Indeed, their traditions and practices glorify the works of men's hands, and do not glorify the God in Heaven whose GLORY cannot be reduced to the vain imaginations men. Icons are simply the fruit of wrong worship of God that has it roots in the hearts through the notion that God needs an earthly /carnal mediator between sinful man and Himself. Jesus Christ is our High Priest. An earthly priest who is just as sinful as anyone else, is not qualified to be our Advocate no matter how much "authority" he's been given.
