This video that I filmed last week at an Orthodox wedding shows us the moment the couple returns to the party after having shared a private moment for the first time in their lives, it was the first time that both could have any physical contact.
The wedding began with the part called Erusim or betrothal which was when the groom gave the ring to the bride but the couple is still not considered married (Nisuim) until they share a home.
For this reason, as soon as the ceremony ends below the Chupah (the religious ceremony), the couple is technically married and consecrated to each other, however the union is not complete until after the Nisuim. Then, after the Chupah, the groom takes the bride to the Cheder Ychud (a private room), which serves as her 'home'.
You used to enter that room to have sex but that no longer exists and is just a myth. For today the couple enters to break a fast together that they began 24 hours ago, to talk and to have their first physical contact. The people at the party, meanwhile, receive the first and second courses.
This tradition is preserved so that the wedding can have Rabbinical approval and if we enter the room we can see that there is a table with food and a comfortable chair to rest, there are no more double beds as in other times.
The couple is accompanied to that room by the two witnesses of the wedding, they wait outside and make sure that everything goes well (inside and outside the room) and they are the ones who accompany them back to the party so that they can celebrate with the rest. of family and guests.
Men and women dance separately. They do it out of modesty and because that's what they want and not because someone forces them.
