Well, you first have to determine the total number of troparia that will be read. The service books typically prescribe 12 or 14, but in most places the canon is significantly shortened, down to six or seven troparia. A Horologion or a liturgical Psalter lays out the text of the biblical odes with numbers: "On 8," "on 6" etc. So if you're doing a canon with irmos + seven troparia (1+7=8), then the last verse you'd read before stopping for the irmos would be the one labelled "on 8." Make sense?
@@StTikhonsMonastery Thank you! However, when I look in my psalter, after the verse labelled "on 8," there are always less than 8 verses! How does one divide the verses after "on 8?" Also, I think I already know that answer, but humor me: Where do I count to insert the Irmos if I wish to read a full canon with the total number (12-14) troparia that are prescribed by the corresponding liturgical book?
