With his typical wit and erudition Chesterton presents Christianity as the best answer to a series of interlocking riddles that live in every human heart. (Summary by Pleonic)

I've listened to this audio book enough times that I literally can't listen to the ones on Amazon. This has become the official voice of Chesterton to me now.

He is probably the most brilliant thinker that I have ever come across.

I think that too, but it's awkward. Sometimes I wonder if I'm a Catholic or instead a Chestertonian.

Orthodoxy inspired a few videos of mine on summary/video essays of what I learned from Chesterton. It's a gold mine of wisdom that changed the way I think about the world.

'Mysticism keeps men sane. When you destroy mystery, you create morbidity. The ordinary man has always been sane because the ordinary man has always been a mystic. He has permitted the twilight. He always had one foot on the earth and the other in fairyland.'

I'm going to start sharing the hell out of this. Chesterton was the bomb, but gets hardly any of the publicity he deserves. He's not flavorless and wishy-washy enough for the public conscience to handle without breaking down and becoming moral and good.

He's been referred to as the most intelligent man of the 20th century. From what I've read, that seems pretty defensible. Genius. He makes us all better and happier for having read his insights.

Oogalook Agreed. He is probably neglected now because he was quoted to the point of cliché in the 40s and 50s, and went out of fashion.

You may have a point there. Also, TV hasn't helped serious thinkers. The TV version of Father Brown is dreadful.

Actually Orthdoxy is usually regarded as inferior to his earlier work, Heresies. If you enjoyed Orthodoxy you would probably love "Heresies". His satirical bent seems to be unleashed more in the earlier work.

"Actually Orthdoxy is usually regarded as inferior to his earlier work, Heresies." Not by me. ORTHODOXY is pertinent to this day. HERETICS is a series of disconnected essays concerning the intellectual fashions of the turn of the last century. Few of them have lasted long enough for their refutation to be of interest to the general reader.

I have seen lists that rank Orthodoxy as one of the greatest books written on Christianity.

I have to disagree. with Linus. The criticisms and biographies of Chesterton that I have read all say that "Heretics" is by far the lesser book...

Does anyone know a specific portion of either this book or one of his others that consists of him defining what is a "chair"?

There are philosophers and mathematicians who go mad e.g. Nietzsche. But Artists and poets do go mad too. No offence but look at Van Gogh, Munch, Plath, Wolf, Hemingway. Chesterton is a bit loose with the truth at times.

"The virtues have gone mad because they have been isolated from each other and are wandering alone. Thus some scientists care for truth; and their truth is pitiless. Thus some humanitarians only care for pity; and their pity (I am sorry to say) is often untruthful. For example, Mr. Blatchford attacks Christianity because he is mad on one Christian virtue: the merely mystical and almost irrational virtue of charity. He has a strange idea that he will make it easier to forgive sins by saying that there are no sins to forgive. Mr. Blatchford is not only an early Christian, he is the only early Christian who ought really to have been eaten by lions." BWAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Chesterton is the supreme writer of modern England. He is there just as silly modernism and progressivism took over and ruined and betrayed England, slaying it all with lightning power. Nations take heed.
