In this episode, we will be talk about something you likely should not do! What is this you ask? That is cutting vinyl with your laser! Why you ask, the burning of vinyl can release Chorine gas which is BAD in fact very bad! However I have received a lot of questions about this material so because I have a sealed system with a substantial air evacuation system I decided to give it a go and even for being sheet goods (i.e. very thin) it still did off-gas quite a bit.

My Ortur LM2 cuts white vinyl very well. I use 1000 and 50% power one pass.

There are many types of vinyl in the world and PVC is one of the few that has chlorine in it. Do you or anyone else know if you can get these sort of sheets in other vinyl types?

Good videos on the Ortur lasers. Have you had a chance to try engraving and or cutting acrylic plastic? The type that are used for Sim Pit panels. 2mm to 5mm thick. Thanks.

You can engrave dark acrylic and likely cut it also however it will not be pleasant smell wise...

you can try engrave on resin epoxy ?

For instance I've experimenting with 4 inch tiles, spray paint a color and then paint them black and using the laser to cut a picture, I'm sure you've seen this on RU-vid. Anyway using this example I will go back and try to reproduce what I did 2 months ago, same settings, and it does not remove the black paint like it did. I then boost the settings and it still comes up short. It's kind of like the power really does not change at all. I don't know, it's just working the way it use to. I hope this makes sense.

Ok, you said that this is harmful to human health, but this is somehow manageable by moving away from the laser while cutting or using a good fan to throw the smoke far away, but I have heard and read on the internet that, besides being harmful to health, it is also harmful to the machine (it corrodes its parts), so is this true? I have a small project and would need to cut some numbers and letters precisely on a Black Vinyl with my 10W xTOOL D1, considering the precision of the laser. I calculate that these are cuts that would take one to two minutes at most. I wonder if there is a similar material to Vinyl, to replace it, but which is also opaque. Thank you

I really appreciate all of your videos they really are informative. I'm having a problem with my 20W laser. It is totally inconsistent and is all over the place even when I use settings that worked before. I'm not sure who to talk to about this since it's from China. Any thoughts? I'm out of ideas on what to do. Thanks.

Can you share more details and I will try and help!

I know Stahl's has videos on laser cutting mostly heat transfer vinyl. They recommend a certain brand laser but I'm assuming it is basically the same.
@DIY3DTECHcom
@DIY3DTECHcom 3 года назад
Yes it is the vaporized material which is the issue and this would be a case with any laser...

@@DIY3DTECHcom but that's what they and the laser manufacturer are advertising and saying it is safe using their products.

Also I did some research and both Stahls and Seiser offer heat transfer vinyl that is polyurethane based which should be much safer with ventilation.

Laser cutting polycarbonate (GE Lexan) or 3M acrylic sheet adhesives is also not recommended. The gases and residue is toxic.

Instead of cutting PVC with the laser, mount a drag knife and do it right :)

I prefer my vinyl cutter by far, however even Winston Moy did a video cutting vinyl so a lot of people do use them in this modality...

Would you please try that two experiments (which I did) ? 1. try to engrave or cut anything through what you call "cheap chinese glasses". 2. try to put that cheap glasses right under under the laser at focus point. When you will notice nothing happens, you will probably stop warning the world to not use the "cheap chinese glasses" any more. They are cheap, ugly, uncomfortable, quick to scratch, not so clear, for sure, but they will protect any eye from any laser diode. Definitely. About reflection on the vinyl, I will give you the benefit of the doubt. My first thought is maybe the laser beam should be mostly absorbed by a material even partially reflective. Second, there's some chances the laser beam will not be able to refocus at a distance after a reflection. I will do some testing to figure out.
@DIY3DTECHcom

You really don't get it do you? That is not a valid test as your retina is not on the other side of the glasses, laser beams are coherent so there is an accumulated exposure risk which can damage the retina. If you apply a microwave analogy, and place a mug of water in a microwave and set it to low it will take longer for the water to boil however it will boil and the same is true for the laser and damage to your eyes. Why do you think they make these glasses? The cheap ones are intended for cosmetic lasers which have a difference modal operation then a hobby laser and Chinese toss these into the box to make you think you got something. Do you really trust the Chinese with your eyes? I don't...

Dear @@DIY3DTECHcom, this is not a question of trust, but a question of physics. And the fundamental laws of physics of light teaches us that a blue laser light is allowed to pass through a same wave length filter only. In other words blue filters only. Stupid donkeys may take your words as gospel, unfortunately. But understand some of your viewers may have educated and Cartesian minds. Pretending fake facts may affect your reputation permanently. May I kindly recommend you to fact check prior to give an advice to your viewers ? Don't get me wrong, quality laser safety glasses are better indeed, because they will allow you to more accurately see through, will last longer and be more scratch resistant. But they won't be a better filter to laser diode beams, I'm afraid. Regards,

@@axelSixtySix No this is completely wrong. Not a valid test to protect your eyes, Based on Science. Here is some more data for you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IAOdWgNtqKg.html
