Most of our modern end of the world literature is set in the future, but the Babylonians, in the midst of a dark age, set their end of the world literature right in their own times, since for them it may have seemed like the world itself was ending. Erra, also called Nergal, wants to destroy a bunch of stuff because that is his nature. He tries protecting the universe, but gets frustrated with that, so he destroys the universe instead. Interestingly, this story may have become extremely popular in Babylonia because it predicted that Babylon would rise again, and in due course of the centuries is sure enough did, in fashion similar to that predicted in the text.

I probably shouldn't say this, given the stereotype but, being from Eire and knowing a little about Erra , this was hilarious. "The fighting Irish" would surely see the funny side. Very well read sir. Slainte!

Outstanding! Considering the amount of bloodshed involved, I am surprised that this tale was not written by an Assyrian of the Sargonic Dynasty... 🙂

Imagine the worldview of people who have been dominated by Assyrians for so long, and it makes sense how folks could see destruction everywhere.

@@entirelyalive Despite the Assyrians' proclivity towards incalculable violence, they were probably just a bit more cruel than most of their contemporaries; the only difference being that the "Men of Aššur" took pleasure in clearly boasting about each and every horrendous deed they committed, whereas others remained silence. Indeed, as fabulously rich as it was, antiquity was not exactly a "safe" and "fair" world.

I thought that, too, until I got to Assurnasirpal. Expect some astonishing creativity in May.
