Osage Orange JUMBOwl

On our 300th video Tim turns a massive piece of Osage Orange in to a JUMBOwl! Weighing in at over 100lbs this is a special piece of Osage Orange harvested by Tim's friend the late John Jordan. It takes a little help from Bryan to get this beast on the lathe and a short 9 hours later Tim is done...literally and figuratively...but the bowl looks great!

I didn't know thar Osage Orange came that big. I have smaller pieces that i use for handle and stems. I have a friend that wants a new knife handle made and I'm thinking about incorporating some Osage Orange. Timely video!

Have turned Osage Orange in the past from a few pieces given to me by one of the WNTX members. Last piece I turned was another bowl, much much smaller than yours. 3x6, but it was about 5 years old at that time. Talk about a tough piece to turn. Kept sharpening about every 5 to 10 minutes or it wouldn't go.

Excellent! Surprised you did not core it for some smaller blanks, even if they ended up half blanks due to the splits. But you pulled it off safely, so that counts for a lot! Glad you could get a piece of his wood that the two of you both cut.

I would have liked to have cored it but the splits scared me off from trying. Probably would have taken us 15 hours then if I had tried it 😵‍💫

Really nice bowl Tim! Always love Osage as it turns and sands great but takes a great finish every time! I turned one that ended at 21-1/2 inches and have 6 huge logs in my yard. It wants to turn brown with uv light hitting it but I found just putting a little sun block on it keeps that beautiful color.

Tim, a good project you turned in this video. I do have a spruce burrell i will be turning in the future. I did turn an elm candle stand and a eucalyptus root cup for the first time this month. You did get me interested in turning when you were on PBS with your short series. I was surprised i did good turning the cup as i thought it would be a disaster as some other types of art i try appeared primative. So far, with turning, i am not a member of the funnel club. I did notice that turning it is relaxing and has a sense of accomplishment with a finished project. Thanks for what you do. Keep turning and be safe.

Nice job. If I am not mistaken you turned the inside outboard which saves your back from leaning in. To seal cracks as I go I often seal from the outside finished surface with 5 min epoxy colored with mica then pour some 30 min colored epoxy and let it soak to as deep as it will go. I realize you wanted to finish in one day. That is a several day project for me. Great j on.

Lovely work Tim. I have a slice of monkey puzzle about two thirds that size and a chunk of elm burr about the same size. I've been eyeing them suspiciously for about a year but you've inspired my to knuckle down and get them on the lathe. Glad to see you kept the tail stock employed for as long as possible. I learn most things the hard way and a piece flew off my lathe a few years back and I put my forearm up to to defend myself and in doing so broke the small bone in my forearm (the ulna) and was forbidden from driving for three weeks.
