In this video we will be making the short side trip from Osaka to Mount Koya, a sacred mountain-top temple town. While on Koysan we'll walk through Japan's largest cemetery, stay overnight at a temple, explore some of the town's most noteworthy temples, and finally go hiking along a short pilgrimage trail.

Visited Koya-san early last year (2018) and I must say it was refreshing and the calmness if the place just exudes a certain peaceful aura. Definitely stay a bit at Kobo Daishi's mausoleum and feel the very relaxing aura of the monks chanting inside.

I went there last month during winter for a day trip and it's breathtaking. The white powdery snow blanketed the pathway and the cemetery, the tall towering cedar trees (if I'm not mistaken it's cedar) and the soft howling of the wind on the background - its just beautiful.

Went to koyasan twice. I visited around a dozen temples & shrines in kyoto, including kurama & kibune. And I can say koyasan okunoin is easily the most magnificent site compare to the others. No other temple could match okunoin beauty, and serenity. Also, a night stay at the temple lodging is highly reccommended.

Oh yeah, totally agree. Koyasan blows Kyoto completely out of the water in my humble opinion. There's just no place in the world anything like it.

Hello, thank you so much for sharing precious information. I am planning a day trip to Mt. Koya from Osaka on March. Would you recommend the best time to depart from Shin Osaka Station? And which time is safe to head back to Osaka from Mt. Koya? Thanks!

You can gain permission to film beyond the bridge if you contact the wakayama government office first, you'll need to sign a bit of paper work and you need a japanese phone number and address, alongside this comes a fee that need to be paid, it's a bit of a hassle but doable.

I want to visit Koyasan from Osaka and stay the night in november, then head to Kyoto . Is it hard to travel with a large lugguage bag on wheels ? . Thanks
@japanguide
@japanguide 5 лет назад
Traveling with large luggage through this itinerary is possible, however might prove inconvenient on the cable car and when walking around the town. A good option is to leave luggage overnight either in a coin locker or at a luggage storage facility at a major station in Osaka while you travel to Koyasan with only a smaller overnight bag. Have a good trip.

I just watched your Toyama vlog and was really disappointed and this vlog was no different! The video footage was great but have you never heard of interviewing a temple monk or a waitress and hear the firsthand account of these incredible places? You should stick to metropolitan transportation vlogs or something similar! You really missed the point!
