Oscar De La Hoya vs Ike Quartey (Highlights) Oscar De La Hoya (29-0-0) vs Ike Quartey (34-0-1) World Boxing Council World Welterweight Title 1999-02-13
So many fighters would have held on for dear life or got stopped in that 12th round .. The fact that Ike just stood his ground and shot it out and was the fresher one by the end of the exchange was legendary. It’s a shame inactivity due to his promoter kind of made his career simmer away
This fight broke my heart as a kid. I didnt even realize how hard Quartey hits at the time. Ike Quartey will forever be my favourite Ghanaian boxer🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭
@@ernestovasquez3468 Oscar didn't duck nobody. But Margarito was calling him out many times and he didn't fight the Tornado. Fast forward, The Golden Boy fought BHop at MW. I'd say, ducking is nullified
De La Hoya had one of the best left hooks in boxing . It just flowed naturally. Awesome job by the ref by letting them fight it out. This was a true classic
Oscars Dad set that up, Oscar is originally left handed, his Dad made him fight conventional so he would be deadly with his lead hand. Ryan Garcia has a left hook that looks amazing.
That was a hell of a fight. If it wasn’t for that last knock down, Quartey would have won that fight in my opinion. However, Oscar never back down to no opponent. One of the greatest Mexican fighters
Reminds me how great Ike was. Holy shit, what a fighter. Took every body shot from Oscar and never even once backed up or even winced in pain. He literally exposed and gave up his ribcage for Oscar to punch all nite long and kept going after Oscar's head. Ike looked like a BEAST this fight.
Ike was a great fighter not many know about. 37-4, 31 KOs, never got knocked out, & his losses were to Oscar, Winky Wright, Vernon Forest, & Fernando Vargas who are all hall of fame level fighters. Oscar was such a stud to take on as many tough guys like Quartey as he did.
Oscar just couldn't really all the top fighters in their prime. Most of titles came from older on the way out the door fighters and they robbed a few fighters and gave the fight to Oscar.
@@efdrayton7773 I've spotted the Julio Cezar Chavez fanboy lol. Every Chavez truther hates Oscar & can't accept those 2 ass whoopins he gave old man Julio. I've seen this same thing said 100x & it's always a butthurt Chavez fan lol. Fun fact. Oscar's opponents list is WAY more impressive than Chavez, & Julio was handed his fair share of undeserved wins too (Whittaker springs to mind.)
First time ever seen this fight of ODLH the best fight ever of his career i must say. Last round was outstanding he had him against the ropes poor guy he took a beating @ min 2:00...gees!
wow..if you wanted to be the man..you had to beat the man..and as "The Man"...if somebody called you out.. you had to toe the line..There was no shame in losing to a better man that night...RIP Boxing..
@@boxingempire5828 he schooled canelo , not oscar , if anything he lost to oscar . At the most at least a draw. Never did he beat oscar tho that decision was very very controversial.
Oscar Dela Hoya the greatest Chicano fighter ever the most beautiful fighter to watch in the ring he has the biggest heart in the world his left jab is the best in boxing history. ❤️🥊🥇
@@jeremyeastland9531 You ignorant fanboy! No troll over here but a true boxing fan that knows that by your dumb ass comment you are nothing but clueless weirdo...
Very good fight. The night I watched this fight live. I thought De La Hoya lost. Since then I have watched it several times. And I can see Oscar winning also. I guess it could have gone either way. But that night I thought Quartey was robbed. And should have got at least a draw.
Great fight I have it on tape !! Ike fought his fight to the end earned a lot of respect for that from me. Credit to De la Hoya he closed the show. I do say he needed that last round and he did it ! He in my opinion pulled it off. But if you saw the fight to the end Oscar wanted nothing to do with Ike after that ! When he was asked about a rematch he was like nahhh ! I was like wow ! Looking at his face from Ike’s Jab all night he did not want that smoke no more LoL 😂
He's the only one giving us a show what are you talking about all the black fighters don't fight anybody they all want old ass pac man there super talented but duck each other that's crazy
Jay P, I agreed to your second point. What about the middle rounds ? A whole 60 seconds to go in the final round, Oscar did nothing. Whichever way you look at, it was a bad win for ODLH.
I mean he was fucking him up in that last round. I was expecting the ref to stop it also. I'm glad he didn't because it wasn't that bad and Ike was throwing back.
Oscar's right hand is basically non-existent. It looks almost amateurish, but his left hand is niiiiice. Quartey is one hell of a fighter too, I went into this one hoping he'd win
Here's a fight i thought Quartey had a chance in winning, because of seeing how dominate he was in past fights. But Oscar proved me wrong. Aside from being floored he made Quartey look ordinary. I thought Oscar beat Mayweather, Trinidad (big ripoff right there, and i wanted Trinidad to win, but he didn't IMO) Shane Mosley (in the second fight). it's too bad he went up in weight to fight Hopkins, especially after a poor showing fighting Felix Strum, and then later on fighting a younger Pacquiao. Other than that a great fighter, who was fun to watch, who probably deserves more credit than he's gotten.
We can argue who won til we are blue in the face and each side will make good points. But both have crazy jabs. I was shocked buy Quartays jab when I first saw it. Also, this was one of the most back and forth battles I've seen
@Great Lakes Mayweather ducked a lot of fighters but he still fought'em tho, he just waited to fight them to either build the fight or waited til they were old, it's called "temporarily ducking"brah.
@@Amari_Antique21-el6uv No matter how hard you try to make excuses for Mayweather, he will always be remembered for waiting to long for Manny. Truthfully ducking him...
Gold rated classic. Very rare for anyone to remember this one. Quartey showed heart and why he belonged. To bad he wasnt very well known. Delahoya in his prime was crisp, very few mistakes.
@@jms6605 and to maidana, and to Packman, and to Oscar. It is harder to fight offensive, an offensive boxer should have small advantage from judges, but Mayweather had some fixed fights, and Castillo was the first.
Referee did an excellent job in this fight especially in the 12th round. And definitely one of the most entertaining fights of the past, shit 25 years!!
This is the toughest fight Dela hoya ever faced in his career. When interviewed he said, I couldn't walk for two weeks after fighting this guy and was asked whether there should be a rematch and he said no. On the scorecard ike was leading until the 12th round Dela hoya realised that something must be done. That's why he fought his life in the last round which eventually changed the results. But most pundits had this fight draw.
I think ike was still winning the fight.. even when he got knocked down in the 12th!... he had oscar on his heels & he looked sloppy all fight!.. I had ike up regardless!
Pacquio even had a concert with his fans after Cotto Margarito Mosley and Bradley fights... thats why he's the greatest fighter of all time!!!! hands down...
This fight was Leonard-Hearns 1 with Ike Q being THH who was giving SRL a boxing lesson and at Angelo Dundee's admonishment Ray came back and landed the money shot to stop Hearns. Oscar had Quartey out on his feet and pulled out a miracle win.
De La Hoya was almost CONSTANTLY underestimated by his opponents because he was almost NEVER the "physical specimen" in the ring. What Oscar had was the technical proclivity to throw his punches with absolute precision and perfection.
