Oscar Peterson and Joe Pass (1980s): Source is VHS recording from same period. Superb musicianship with evident mutual respect! Uploaded in honor of Dad (1926-2012): Dedicated husband and father, physician, musician and more.
It's crazy how Joe stays loose and comfortable, not getting rattled or swamped, or dragging, in all that piano and high tempo. He's just all ears, hears it and plays it.
i was lucky enough to see Joe Pass perform in a dinner club inside some guys house in half moon bay, ca just before he died. he couldn't get the house amp to work so he asked me to help, as i was sitting in front of him ... that jeorsee accent was thick man especially with the choice "french" being spoken about said amp! a memory i have burned in my mind forever ...what a night
If there is such a thing as "mastery" we are priviledge to it in recordings like this. For me as an intermediate sort of musician ... at least I know it can be achieved. Humankind , despite it's weaknesses , is capabable of such heights. Simply astounding that mere mortals have attained this level of expression in one lifetime. Magnificent! cheers..
I saw Oscar and Joe perform together with Ella and Basie - yeah together and in duo's and trio's and with the band. I thank God my father gave me the gift of playing and loving jazz. When performed at this level it is such a pure expression of the human spirit - it is what is great about being alive! - The pure joy on their faces says it all!
I’ve listened to these guys for decades and had the good fortune to see Joe Pass at Ronnie Scott’s in the 1970’s. Here’s my comment. Just look at the joy on their faces, isn’t this part of what it’s about, unbridled spontaneity and pure joy at connecting with another musician and an audience at the same time. Wonderful!
Peterson'e smile is priceless. Two genuinely sweet guys, these two. It shows. As for the music, well... Would you expect anything less than perfection from those cats ?
Doesn't get much better than this. No player could swing it like Oscar (everything he did would swing) Joe Pass will be remembered as one of the greats.
This was back when the TV networks had great talent on at least once or twice a week and people who would normally never be exposed to such great music could see and experience the greats. Now it's all crappy reality tv shows and infomericials.
musical talent of this kind belonged to men such as Johann Sebastian Bach and a few others. Peterson and Pass were undoubtedly others. That power of improvisation is amazing.
Two master musicians who are the epitome of world class...Oscar Peterson's hands were like magic as they slid across those keys man...he was phenominal
Great to see all the appreciation for Oscar and Joe, who I unfortunately never saw live. They were at an unbelievable level of musicianship and musical telepathy. I read that Oscar used to practice 18 hours a day. Sounds like it.
'It was my great good fortune to see Oscar and Joe perform at a small nightclub in North Vancouver, B.C., back in the '80s -- one of the greatest musical experiences of my life.
Amazing!!! Oscar Peterson & Joe Pass together!!! Oscar Peterson had a pretty voice! He often hummed playing pianos with very low deep voices..., but his speaking voices & singing voice are pretty & much higher than ones I was familiar with! His piano play is so amazing! And it looked like as if he was having an ecstasy watching & listening to Joe Pass playing his guitar! So funny!
I seem to hear some of the influnces of musical history being quoted and embelished even. Django Rheinhart , Nat King Cole , Art Tatum.. Who carries the tradition of the great river now? I hate to be judgemental of musics.. but sooo much contemp[oray pop is sooooo overated (yet self absorbed). These men were freaking GIANTS. Yet so humble at the same time. There are no words... Just listen and thank the creator you had ears. be well all..
AMAZING! So passionate, and creative, and swings at that tempo. As a piano player many years traveled a couple hours to hear Joe and Oscar, on arriving found out Oscar was not able to make the gig, Joe p[ayed solo, dissapoint to learn, but Joe was amazing
Le mie più sincere congratulazioni. c.castellano, italy .......but how good !! Joe Pass and Oscar Peterson? Two Great Jazz Artists, two "Big," of High International Stature, two Great Artists who crowned and studded the firmament of Jazz Music with their Art. Listening to them together, as on this occasion, is an exceptional opportunity for Jazz lovers who feel, on their skin, that typical and irrepressible universal sensation of the soul called "Emotion" !! And it seems a little to you? The hairs of the arms become "bristly", you stay there to listen to them, enchanted and open-mouthed, without saying a word, for the irrepressible "emotion" you feel in your brain and soul and say to yourself in a whisper: Good heavens, wonderful!! But what good, really good. My sincere congratulations. c.castellano, Italy
The greatest jazz guitarist to walk the planet,Joe Pass, the greatest jazz pianist to walk the planet,Oscar Peterson. I saw Joe Pass perform many times but I regret never seeing Oscar Peterson.
@@robertvanruyssevelt7159 I can really appreciate that- I play solo jazz guitar gigs, and there's a venue where I like to play 2 hrs straight-- But after about an hour and a half my hands start to become numb, and I'm not playing anything even CLOSE to what these guys are doing!
Incredible! I got to see them play in a quartet (?) with Ella singing in San Francisco many years ago. A once in a lifetime concert. This was extraordinary - there's hope for the world! Thanls for sharing.
