Full interview with Sixto Rodriguez and Malik Bendjelloul here: bit.ly/UTIvvK
The Weekly Comet hosts Tamara Conniff and Jonathan McHugh present an exclusive performance with singer/songwriter Rodriguez, who is the subject of the Oscar winning "Searching for Sugar Man."
Sixto Rodriguez' story is truly inspirational. A native of Detroit, in the 1970s he recorded two albums which went largely unnoticed in the U.S. He hung up his guitar and went to work in construction for 30 years. However, unbeknownst to Rodriguez his albums gained popularity internationally, going platinum in South Africa and becoming the anthem of resistance in the Apartheid-era. Director Malik Bendjelloul's "Searching for Sugar Man" chronicles the journey of two fans on a mission to find out what had happened to Rodriguez, who was rumored to have committed suicide. Rodriguez performs his world famous hit "Sugar man"
Chords to Sugar Man: sugarman.org/su...
Lyrics:
Sugar man, won't you hurry
'Cause I'm tired of these scenes
For a blue coin won't you bring back
All those colors to my dreams
Silver magic ships you carry
Jumpers, coke, sweet Mary Jane
Sugar man met a false friend
On a lonely dusty road
Lost my heart when I found it
It had turned to dead black coal.
Silver magic ships you carry
Jumpers, coke, sweet Mary Jane
Sugar man you're the answer
That makes my questions disappear
Sugar man 'cause I'm weary
Of those double games l hear
Sugar man
Sugar man
Sugar man

In South Africa he has been our idol since I was a child.. we just thought he was WORLD famous, instead he was RIPPED OFF ... and America ignored him.. he is a True Hero in our eyes and always will be. Watch the movie/documentary Searching for sugar man.. and cry with emotion and love!

I just discovered his music this year. He lives just an hour away from where I live. I had no idea. I heard he finally got paid the royalties that was due him for all those years - and thank you folks of South Africa and elsewhere to buying and playing his music. Without ya'll, he would still be unfound.

R.I.P Malik Bendjelloul (sitting next to Rodriguez), you not only brought us a beautiful film about a man who didn't take his life as legend thought, but you brought him back to life and made him the legend he is. It was you in the end who departed the world by your own hands. It's such a tragedy, you were very gifted and you were very worthy of your Oscar. May you rest in peace ♥ x

What an absolute privilege to be on the couch... during my later high school years 81,82 & 83 in Australia, 'Jesus' as we used to call him, was played around the clock... thereafter, always a friendly voice to listen to and a soundtrack to many of our lives ... I don't think there has ever been a poetic lyricist like him that sings in a clear and concise voice

Rodriguez plays guitar with four fingers. He lost his 4th finger on his left hand in an industrial accident years ago while working as a labourer. He still plays a mean guitar! His process is so beautiful, and humble, when he sings his voice seems so detached from the kindly man he is, he seem to slip into seance, and how he draws into his instrument his time machine. Could have been great but he shunned the fame, could have been great, but a man is what a man is. Rest gentle, that you will be called again.
