You're absolutely correct. The bantering between Kana and Aqua it's a very appealing element to the type of relationship they have, as fundamentally their opposite personalities create an excellent contrast that has been seen in many romance anime. Still, I think there's a very good reason that explains Aqua's “dry” reactions to Akane (though I could also argue that it's pretty much the way he talks to everyone, including Ruby and Kana). It's the fact that Aqua isn't allowing himself to get close to her or be genuine with her on purpose. We should remember that season one ended with Aqua thinking of using Akane's intelligence and investigative skills to try to find Ai's killer. The thought of using Akane is bad enough, so Aqua doesn't want to make the situation worse by letting something else grow between him and her (whether romantic or platonic). However, all I can say is that not everything goes as planned... 👀

Regarding the talk of adaptations, if a manga is very popular, it’ll probably get an anime adaptation and drama if it doesn’t require special effects. That’s why usually you’ll see romances or comedies adapted into live action dramas. As to which came first regarding “Boys Over Flowers” (Hana Yori Dango), checking Wikipedia, it says the manga came out in 1995, and they made a drama series that year. The anime adaptation came out the next year. There were several other live action drama adaptations in the 2000s in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and China. Other manga/anime/TV dramas I remember include: GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka): manga - 1997 to 2002, TV drama 1998, anime 1999, 2012, 2014, TV drama in Taiwan 2014. Salaryman Kintaro: manga 1994-2002, TV dramas 1999-2004, 2008-2010, anime 2001 Gokusen: manga 2000-2007, TV drama 2002-2008, anime 2004 Looking at this small sample data, it looks like a TV drama adaptation may come out sooner than the anime version. My guess is that it’s because an anime production takes a lot longer to produce than a live action version, especially if the setting is at a school. Logistically, stories that require more fantasy-like elements or special effects would be harder to pull off successfully for live action. I remember watching a live action TV movie of Ranma 1/2 (starring Aragaki Yui as Akane) and cringing a little even though I wanted to like it.

That's exactly how I feel about the Aqua x Akane ship! You guys took the words right out of my mouth. They could work amazingly as friends, I really think they can become really close, but they don't have a spark, there's not a shred of (romantic) tension between them. Akane is really cute and the animation is definitely enhancing it, but you can just see how dry Aqua's reactions to her are (as in, there's none). Meanwhile, even if he barely interacted with Kana yet this season, I could make a list of little moments he was more aware and attentive towards her than he ever was to Akane 🤷🏾‍♀️

Tbh after a certain point in the manga, the whole ship thing doesn't matter to me anymore. Akane is my best girl, but i feel some people (maybe a lot of anime-onlys, and i'm pretty sure that's intentional) still choose which girl they prefer based on who's better with Aqua....which, imo, is none😂 they both deserve someome better than him honestly. But that's just me. I prefer Akane as a character (she's my favorite character in the series). But i'm sure there'll be a point when people will realize Akane and Kana can shine brightly without the whole shipping thing. Also, the arguing in the end of the ep tho 😂 i like the back and forth between the senseis. I like how Abiko-sensei was almsot falling asleep before Yoriko-sensei arrived, but then she fired up when the arguing started. Well, that's one way to awake someone sleepy: make them angry😂
